MONEY MARKET. ’ Whursday, May 18—6 P, M; ‘The business at the Board was not large to-day, and | rates did not materially vary. Ohio 6’s rose }; New York State 6)’ of 1861 fell ; Mlinois 6’, } ; Mohawk Railroad rose}; Harlem $; Stonington }. At the new Board the business was larger at nearly the same prices, About $500,000 arrived yesterday in the Liverpool and Havre packets, and about $50,000 in gold is engaged to return. It is possible that a considerable amount will go back. At New Orleans, the following sales of stocks were made at auction :— 150 shares Commercial Bank at. 400 do > ate do ys 252 do Mechanies’ and Trader: 110 do — Carrollton (full paid). . .. . 12 de Croton Press, 19 40 do Ocean Insurance, (850 paid.) $11 The amount cf Treasury Notes, in the hands of inno- cent third fparties, repudiated by the government, is near $130,000. This is one of the most disgraceful acts that has yet occurred. The Treasury Department paid the interest on them six months after they were alleged to have been lost, and now repudiates them. The high prices of stocks are bringing out large quan- tities of stock that has been held for years ; but the want of some means of investment checks the disposition.— Bank of Kentucky is avoided for no other reason than that there are no transfer books here. The Courier states that Dr. John W. Schmidt, Jr. is a new director of the Harlem Railroad. This is as nearly cor rect as might be expected. Dr. Sehmidt was an able and efficient director during the past year. The practical operstion of the bankrupt law in Massa- chusetts, in the Boston district, has been as follow: Petitions filed, Hy he ‘Whole number bankrupts, Paid into Court by assignees of estates 7 338 “ over to creditors, 306,561 Number of cases where dividends have been declared, ‘The assets appear to average a little over $100 cea The commerce on the New York canals is much larger this year than last. The navigation opened ten days later than usual, and the results are as follows :— Touts axp Business or THR Canats Li Arsineto THE 2p WEEK IN ears i oe AND 184; ys. maze a Wheat cleared. received: rec'd. 1247, 11,835,426 21310 5,120 1843, 13,434,087 56 865 7,862 95 555 1,942 On the occasion of the late arrival, we published the re marks of 2 Manchester paper on the receipt from Boston ofalot ofdrillings. The fact of the export isthe natural and unavoidable result of the low prices of the articles As long as the currency ofthis sountry is dear, andon a specie level, its manufacturers and farmers can profitably compete with and undersell the world. The following isa table of the prices of Lowel manufactures in the Bos ton market at different periods. The export demand in Boston is yet good, and as stocks are running low, prices willnow go up. Contracts to deliver in July at the present rates have been declined. The average highest rates now, as compared with 1839, are as fol. lows:— Averoge quotations in aeeet Ina per yard, 13 cts. May, 1843, 976 Average fall, 26 per cent—or, per yard, 335 The average lowest price in December last was 8.6 cents per yard, and is now 7.7, showing a fall of 12 per cent.— This is the true reason of the ability to export manufac- tures. Let us look at the Boston prices of the raw mate- rial and provisions for the same periods :— Mobile, ‘Tennessee, Rion. New Orleans, 3a do superior, 15 9 16 Sea Islard, —a— Georsee flour, 6.75 0.8.00 5 = 15,00 10 00 alu, = 123,00 4,00 00 55a 60 47a (56 38a 35 SBA 38 Here is w reduction for greater than that of manufac- tured goods. Let us lock at the results—100,000 yards negro plain cottons in 1839, would sell for $16,000 ; that sum would buy 107,141 Ibs N Orleans cotton, or 1000 bbls. mess beef. The same number of yards will now sell for $10,000 which will now buy 142,857 Ibs New Orleans Cotton, nr 1142 bbls mess beef, as follows :— Plain cotton. bs_cotton. Mess fer ie yds $15,000 Fg Mi or 1 10,000 112,857 or 1,142 Actual balance in fiver of manvfactures 35,716 ua This isan extraordinary result ; one-third less money now commands the same quantity of manufactures as in 1839, which commands 35 per cent more raw material than in that yoar. This is the true secret of the protec- tion of domestic manufactures. The wages and board of the operatives, 10s. per week, isnow nearly the same ss in 1889. The immense demand for goods for export, which is likely to grow out of these low prices, will in crease almost indefinitely the demand for labor. These results are destreyed by a high tariff and peper currency, which produce an artificial state of prices, utterly de- structive of the best interests of all coneerned. While the channels of trade are choked by the tariff, and the Process of inflation is going on, they are apparently get ting rich, butthe maximum is soon attained, and prices fall back on a destroyed trade and accumulated stock. Ia the present position of the American manufactures, hardened down under the decreasing compromise act, and with alow and steady specie currency, with such a superabundance of agricultural supplies, the trade of the ‘world is open to the enterprize of the United States. The manufactures of England, crushed under accumulated “protection” to all interests, will inevitably be super- seded.
