It will be re- membered in the case of Boorman & Co. that their contract with Little & Co., fell due while the books were closed here; and they repudiated the debt on the ground that a transfer by power was not valid. With such an example before their eyes, people who would otherwise buy the stock, lose confidence. The price of the stock is now 50, and shrewd men say it would rise to 80, if they could free- ly transfer it. Here is a difference of 30 per cent, which i# equal to $1,600,000. The late Jaw abolish- ing the bank commissioners, is, in its operation, looked upon as destructive of the country banks,{and a great wantof confidence prevailsin them. This for the most part exhibits itself in the fact, that when notes are lodged fer collection with a city bank, the amount is not paid nor passed to the credit of the owner of the note as formerly, but the city bank gives acheck for the amount onthe country bank, which check is sold in the street. The most experienced financiers display the greatest contrariety of opinions on the position of affairs.
