Rio Da Janemo, Dec. 13, 1842. Our Consul at Rio—His popularity there—Disastey at Sea— Trade, §. James Gorven Benyett, Esq., L. L. D., GENERALISSIMO, &« Dear Sir :— In one of my previous letters, 1 gave you some account of the proeeedings of the United States Consul at this port, in his attempt to procure the confiscation of the American bark Mary, Captain Clark, upon the alleged ground of smuggling. Truly, our worthy Consul’s new office is likely to prove his most profitable employment. My letter has aroused the ire of the honorable gentleman, and he has been loud in his denunciations against “The Herald,” and its Rio correspondent, and has visited them with almcst as much abuse as he heaped upon Mr. Tyler when he received information of the no- mination of a successor. The effect has been that he has extended the circulation of the Herald, by increasing the number of its subscribers in’ thie distant land, and confirmed your correspondent in his determination to continue te furnish you with a faith{ul account of all the occurrences likely to inte- (rest your readers He is in great trepidation for 3 fear of his removal, and hea pre pared @ petition for {a continuance in office, whic has entrusted to the management of a friend, to endeavor to pester the American merchants into signing: This pre- cicus document, which was presenied a few days ago for my signature, sets forth his most immaculate character, extraordinary fitness for the office, and most surprising industry in the discharge of its duties. By dint of unwearied importunity, he has succeeded in procuring the names of ve oF (BIx merchants, some of whom have declared upon sign- ing theirnames, that they did it out of sheer pity, ile they were satisfied of his. heing exceeding] obnoxious. President Tyler is a man of too mue! good sense to be humbugged by such a document, as he knows the facility with whieh such petitions can be gotten up by the appeal of friendship. There is scarcely an American vessel arrives at this port but what the master has some unpleasant collision with the Consul, in the annoying difficulties he is constantly presenting in the most simple business af- fairs. Mr. Slacum. 1 ite a3 unpopular here as he is at head-quarters in Washington; and if he is seas tinued in office atter the developments which have been made,.and are still constantly occurring, I am mistaken in the decision of character, and inflexible justice of Mr. Tyler! Price of Coflee, per arrobe of 32 lbs., December 1th:—Superior, 88500 a 38700; first good, 3$100 a 8$300; ordinary, 2$800 a 33000 ; second good, 23:50 a 2$600; do ordinary, 1$800 a 2$300; com- mon, 1$000 a 19200, The American brig Africa, Captain Lemont, of Maine, bound from Montevideo to Batavia, when out 14 ‘days, sprung a leak so badly as to be com- pelled to put in here in distress. She has been con- demned, and will be sold next week. I understand some of the i insurance offices in your city are inte- rested in this vessel. There have been a number of arrivals from _— United States, within a few weeks, with flour, which, at the prices at which the few last cargoes were sold, pays a good freight, but little profit to the shipper. *Stock on hana comprises ahout four months consumption. Coffee maintains its price well, notwithstanding the largé stock—principal shipments to the United States are making to New Orleans, The American houses of Messrs. Max- well and Wright, and Mr. J. Birckhead, are doing a heavy business in flour and coffee. Yours, &c. CommEnce. Louisville, Ky. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Louisviiix, Feb. 17 1843. State of the River—Defeat of the Stop Laws—Defeat of the Banks—Public Health—Mesmerism—Mag- netism, §c. Navigation has at length closed; the river ia en- tirely blockaded with ice; it has been extremely cold for the last week; we have had very fine sleigh: ing, and a fair prospect for a Jong continuation ot the same—rather a rare occurrence for this ch- mate. The efforts of our representatives to remeve the seat of legislation from Frankfort to this place, will prove abortive, at least for this session; the question may again be taken up next year, but if Father Mil- ler’s doctrine prove true we will notneed any more legislative assemblies in this world. The Common- wealth Bank scheme has exploded; so by the strenu- ous efforts of the whigs, we are saved from this ragmill—there is no danger of our having this ruin- ous paper entailed upon our citizens. The relief or valuation law, most likely will share the same fate; so that of the Commonwealth Bank. Although a large number of our representatives are using all exertions to force the bill through, the majority of ue locefocos will, in all probability, vote for re- lief. Unfounded rumors and reports, calculated to mi lead the public as regards the state of health in this city, are in cireulation. {tis published abroad that the small pox is raging with unabated fury, that nu- merous new cases are daily appearing, and large numbers dying rapidly. Such is not the fact; od one or two cases have been discovered, and those of ee pyapatts in other respects our city is per- fect! tly healthy. ‘e have had another humbugging lecturer de- lighting our citizens with his nonsense at ten cents a head. Hislecture room each night was crowded ; no doubt it proved a lucrative business to fensor Bronson and Mr. Nash. The last two nights of his apy here he lectured on ae ake mesmerism, &c. A Dr. Stewart, of Indiana, with his son, de- lighted the musienon with hie experiments in neuro- logy. It must lr tt that. the boy was well trained, and performed his part admirably. This science is far more ae and eee than mesmerism, for the collusion must be so pable, and evident to every reflecting mind, thar I should think it would be cried down immediately. Professor Bronson, in his lecture, spoke very con- fidently of his power as a mesmerist ; said he was certain that he could throw a patient in the mesme- ric state, and extract a tooth or amputate a limb, unknown to the p: Rene or cause him the slightest teeling of pain. He narrated some most miraculous tales, that beat Baron Munchausan all hollow; egad, his stories are nota patching. Bronson relate in- stances, and gave names, where a mesmeric patient had told the cause of disegse, when it happened &e. Another narrated a visit to the mountains o the Moon, iw Africa, and gave a relation of what might be seen there, to substantiate all these state- ments Bronson gave the names of those present at the time of the experiment; he also related, that one patient, on being asked, gave a description of the ‘uture state, and trom what he said ske related in relation to this abject, Ishould Judge she had carefully perused ‘ Dick on a Future State.” Bron- son laid great stress upon the names he gave to sup- rt the statement he made; as to their respecta- Eility, high standing, &c., &c. Well, who are those persons whom he mentioned ? Not one of the au- dience could say they knew any of them; and for obtaining their evidence it would be useless to at- tempt finding where these persons lived at the pre- sent time, or Laagtioll they lived or not,no one ceuld say. Supposi 0g thev are alive, and we knew their abode, it would be useless to enquire about such a matter, as most likely it was forgotten since. Bronson } knew this; he was won aware that the wit- gave would not be calied on; he knew hati it ie eould gull te people Keen them names that it would assist him pis idee and thatit could do him no harm, of, { trifling import, has its influence ah Sine ah r they think he would not give person’s names, no matter how distant they may be, unless the facts are ashe slated.
