The spirit of speculation is rife m the market,and disaster is in the background. ‘The tax bill before the Alabama Legislature enacts as follows :— Swe. 2. Be it further enacted, That there skall be col- lected fcom every planter, farmer, lawyer, physician overseer, merchant, trader, dealer, manufacturer, or urti- san, whose gross income exceeds the sum of $10,000 per annum,an annual tax amounting to $25 —and from the se- persons whose gross income shall be less than $10,- 000 and more than $5,000, there shall be collected $15, and from the several persous, whose income shall be less than and more than $3,000, there shall be collected $7,- 80, and from all such persons whose income shali be less than $3,000 and more than $1,000, there shall be collected $3, and from all persons whose income shall exceed $500 and be less than $1,000, there shall be collected one dol- lar ; and the mode by which said sums shall be ascertain- ed, shall be in the manner prescribed in the act to raisé a revenue for the support of the State government.
