The stock is held by nine hundred and forty-one per- sons, and the number of accounts now open in the Bank nearly reach twenty-five hundred. Repudiating resolutions were introduced into the Florida House of Representatives on the 6th, and failed. The condition of the United States, in relation to the indebtedness of the insolvent members of the confederacy, canin no wise be considereda local, peculiar, or tem- Porary circumstance. It is tothe funding system, what the failure of the banks in 1637, was to the credit system throughout the world. Small politicians and superficial thinkers, affect to ascribe the disasters which followed that event, to local and political movements It is, how- ever, an undoubted fact, that the inflated credits in this country, formed at that time but a part of the bubble, which, centering in London, embraced the commercial world. ltistrue, that it gave way in this country first, because this was the weakest point, and most dependant to support it on foreign aid. The difficulties started here Tolled over the face of the earth, and the paper system of England, on which its debt and aristocracy are reared as ona sand bank, in the fall of 1989 was saved from de. struction only by a loan of £4,000,000 from the Bank of France. The rebound of that event on this country, has caused the insolvency of many State governments tobe declared. This isthe only difference between them and the European governments. They are all insolvent and bankruptcy, which is only a declaration of insolvency, must soon'follow. Theoutcry raised in Europe against this inevitable course, isnot in consequence of the mere loss of the money, but because it touches their only vul- nerable point. It isthe practical manner, in which the progress of human rights will be applied to the credit- supported tyrannies of Europe. When this country threw off the yoke of Eng- land, and adopted the elective republican form of Government, it rejected forever the absurd preten. sions of monarchy to invade the rights, and restrict the liberties of future generations. They viewed with unutterable contempt, the absurd, presumptive end slavish conduct of the English people, when in 1689, they sent to Holland for William to eome and reign over them, and by solemn compact with him “did renounce and abdicate their rights, to choose a King ever after, for themselves, and for all their posterity for ever.” Such are the words of the instrument. The American people acknowledge no right in by-gone ages to take away their inalienable rights, nor did they covet the power toenslave posterity, body andsoul. It did happen, however, that made, ‘Sperm oil Whale, profitab! age, Ext tend her Havrr- burg. Ew NYorl Whale oil,. To talk of thestrength of a country which cannot feed its people in time of peace, is absurd. Depriving the United States of her lands is to take awey her military strength ; there would be no means to put in requisition the resources of the country. It isthe only basis for government credit in time of war. The idea of giving them to English bond holdersis in the highest de- gree treasonable. The attempt to enforce iton the part of the foreign governments would not be a war between nations. It would be a war of the aristocracy and fund- holders of all nations against the tax payers of all nations. Would the people of England and Ireland pay new taxes to the bond holders for the sake of enforcing taxes upon their relations who have emigrated to Illinois and Indiana to avoid taxes? The commencement of a war of taxation againstthe United States, would be throwing down the gauntlet to republicanism throughout the world. What would then be the fate of the English debt? There is now nocommunity of interests in any nation between the people und the debt-covered governments. The magni- tude of the debts has destroyed the power to protect the people and left the governments only instruments of op- pression. Theonly way to stave off the fatal day is for the State creditors here to take the offers of compromise thatare held out in Mlinois and elsewhere, as quietly as possible, and let the matter drop. aS ee Corn Trade, We have nothing new to record in this market remain as last sumption. No State had any more right to spend money for any purpose whatever, and bind future generations to pay for it, than they had to inflict upon them hereditary governors. ‘This evil, which crept inte the government of this country, through the influence of those who favored a monarchical government, and for the want of information, as general on the financial, as well as political matters, has developed its atrocious character, and will lead to its extinguishment inevitably. Itis the force and influence of this form of republicanism, which*by appealing practically to the pockets of the starving masses of England and Europe, will sap the foundation of the whole superstructure of aristocracy. This event will be accelerated by the move- ment towards “ assumption of the State debts,” which if carried into effect, will reduce the whole to the level of 13 Wri sham & J: —%5 Ad Oppenhe File—2} com? PORT OF NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 20, The attempt of foreign governments through the instru: mentality of debt, to alienate the public lands from the fe- deral government, is one of the boldest attempts at subju- gation ever attempted. This country has no standing ar- my and but a small navy, but the public lands in the hands of the federal government are the cheap and efficient sub- stitute. They form a bond of unity in peace, and are the only resource in war. Nw nation ever at any time exist ed on the face of the earth so strong, physically, as the United States at this moment. 19,000,000 of industrious people, annually produce from the soil, wealth of all de scriptions in volumes far beyond their powers of consump- tion. The commencement of a war, causing the govern- Ment to issue 200,000,000 to $300,000,000 of paper money, based upon public lands, would render instantly available the whole power and wealth of the country. It would Convert her iron mountains into cannon that would encit | “re Biliow, Berr clethe country, convert the forests into ships and steam | Nesmith, Leeds & frigates sufficient to cover the ocesn, put in requisition manufactures, and produce sufficient to feed, clothe and pay an army greater than assembled Europe could ce!- lect. The host of restless, jaring and enterprising spirits whom the paper system has ruined, would be put in requi- sition, the country would become rich by the operation, commerce would not suffer because the late tariff has al- ready destroyed it. Where isthe country that would have the temerity to attack such an array? The vast apparent power of England is a starved skeleton. Daniel Webster has said that “commencing with the rising sun her morn. ing drum beat encircles the earth with a continuous atrain of the martial airs of England.” This is true, but her possessions are military outposts far too extended for her tosupport. Evenin time ef profound peace sir Robery Peel was obliged to repudiate the 3 per cent of the nations] debt in order to feed these garrisons, and even in the zenith of British power, when her annual expense was $000, 000,- 000 she never could assemble 40,000 English troops at any one point on the continent, The nation, with this vest te Hy mate) to rma Sehi master. bags are at h lth: The B. experi coast forthe lest week. ‘Ship Gaston, Elder Edw.
