Several appointments were made to-day, but none for the city of New York. ‘The office seekers trom your city still hang on in anxious expectation—even those already dis-appointed, still think there is a chance for them. It’s “hope on, hope ever,” with them, Among the appointments made to-day were the following, which are the most important of them —the rest being merely notaries, and such like :— Chester Heyden, Amos Woodworth and Pomeroy Jones, to be Judges of the County Courts for Onei- da. The last is a re-appointment. Charles Goodyear, to be First Judge of the coun ty of Schoharie. There was little or nothing of general importance done in either branch ef the Legislature to day. In the Assembly, to-day, Gen. Davis (the Speaker) continued, but did not conclude, his speech com- menced yesterday on the Governor’s Message. It is about the best speech of the session, and shows Gen, D. not tobe behind any member of the Hovse in talent. . The Saeet of Wiis Hare was a most able one indeed, but I am inelined to think Gen. D.’s far ex- cels it. There is only one objection, and that is its greatlength. He was moat peculiarly happy in some of his allusions. For instance, in speaking of Gov. Seward’s recommending the vigorous prosecution of the public works, and that the State should go on borrowing, he said it reminded him of astory he once heard. A German musician had beea employ- ed to play a specified number of tunes on a certain wind instrument. He had searcely got agoing be- fore his employers began to cry, ‘blow rear blow harder!” ‘and at each successive impulse the perforiner puffed away, blowing stronger and strong- er, until he was eventually obliged to desist, from exhaustion. Nothing satisfied, “blow. harder— blow harder!” was still the cry. At length, exaspe- rated to a final effort, he turned upon his persecutors and said: “ [t’s easy enough to say, * Blow harder— blow harder!’ but where the devil isthe wind to come trom?” Ia the Senate, Mr. Porrer gave notice of a bill to regulate the fees of inspectors of provisions in the city of New York, and of the health officer. Look out for a sweeping cutting dewn, O, ye newly reptinee officers, for retrenchment is the order of he day, In the Assembly, Mr. Lex introduced a bill to amend the revised statutes relative to the inspection 1 pot and pearl ashes, &c. in the city of New ork. Mr. Leann gaye notice of his intention to intro- duce a bill to aid inthe construction of the New York and Erie Ruilroad. Mr. W. Hatt gave notice of his intention to in troduce a bill to regulate the deposit of public mo- ney, received under protest by public officers. Mr. H. also called up his resolution asking the Comp- troller to report whether any portion of the mill tax had been pledged for money borrowed, &c. and it was adopted. As usual, Mr. E. Stroxe took the opportunity to make himselt a philosopher on the subject of the beautiful and classic language he used toward a fel- low member the other day. Simon. Seneca Falt: (Correspondence of the Herald.) Seneca Fatrs, Feb. 1, 1843. Progress of Religion and Piety—The Devil at his Trumps—Balls and Cotillons—An Elopement— State of Things. Dear Sin— The people of this village have, for the last few weeks, been raised to the highest pitch of excite- ment, by the preaching of Mr. Bernard, a very pious Baptist minister, of the Miller school. He preached inthis village about two weeks, and set a number of our goodly inhabitants in a state of excitement by his eloquence. He took in gratuities rising $100 from this town. During his preaching he had a per- tect “rush,” as the saying is. We will put Seneca Falls against the world for preaching and praying, dancing and fiddling, &c., &c. There are three protracted meetings and three dancing schools now in full tide of operation. The Baptists commenced the work of God, and are go Ing it strong, baptising scores weekly, and almost daily. They preach xp Millerism to the highest point, alleging that the world will, without any mis- take, terminate on the third of April next, and scaring our inhabitants into their doctrines by the wholeeale. , The Methodists came next, and opened with a burst of Demosthenian eloquence from the lips of the Rev. Mr. Storey, which made the walls shake and the people tremble. They, too, are multiplyin; rapidly, and the anxious seats are well filled, an about a hundred joined the church. Last night the streets leading to the churches were literally crowd- ed with human beings wending their way to the dif- ferent churches. ‘*What'sto pay?” asked hundreds of people. “Why, havn’t you heard that the preach- er solemnly declared that to-day was the last day of grace, and that no more conversions would take place afterto-might?” “Why, no. | Do they say it is sot [f it is, we mustgo.” Andall the churches were crowded to overflowing; and thus it goes in this town from one week’s end to another. The Presbyterians cannot make a raise, though they have tried their best to do so. About a week agoa Mr. Richards wasannounced to preach to the young, and it being the night for one of the balls, the sisters of the church went around to all the resi- dences of the females, and requested them to stay away from the ball and go to church. But it was “no go;” they showed their preference for dancing. The dancing schools increase rapidly, and balis and cotillens are fe occurrences. Surely this is agreat world, and no mistake—preaching, pray- ing, fiddling, dancing, &c. Your paper is in great demand here—itis looked to for all the latest news, money articles, &e. We had quite aromance here last Sunday. One of our “bloods,” had been courting a young lady for some time, until about twe months since, when he was forbid by the lady’s parents; and last Sunday he went and called the young lady out of the singer’s seats, in one of our churches, and jump- ed into the carsand went to Syracuse, and there the hymenial band was joined, and on Wednesday re- turned home “The course of true love,” &c. Letter from Coney Island lice System: | °" the Police foam parr. m iscovering the difficulty of your city ant} to devise a plan to establish PY police depres and having read the several documents presented by some of the most learned and prominent gentle- men of your city, I here send you my views upon the subject. If you should deem them deserving attention, you will please give them publicity. The department should consist of at least, six divisions, stationed at the following places, consisting of fifty men each. Ist division should be ioned at the Exchange, or somewhere in the vicinity of Wall street, halt of which should at least pass six times through the several streets about the Exchange, and ten times through Wall street. No policeman should be per- mitted to enter any bank or broker's office, or spesk to any broker in the street, except on business. This division should consist of broken merchants, defaulters and bank clerks. The captain should be a man who hastaken the bankrupt law, and whe has a large pair of whiskers, to appear courageous. Each individual composing this dace should be able to boast of being at one time worth $100,000 in fancy stocks. i 2d might be stationed at the Astor House or ite vicinity. This division should comprise bank- Tupt storekeepers, men who have dined at the City Hotel on roast beef when their families have dined on mutton broth. Halt should perambulate Broad- way, enter stores, lean upon the counters, and watch the ladies, and, if possible, detect them in the very act of shoplifting; they should keep a care- ful look out for genteel rogues. The captain should be one who has once possessed $200,000 in real es- tate, but has been bamboozled out of it. 3d division should be stationed at Tammany Hall,or in its vicinity. It should be composed of disap- pointed polities bankrupt editors, and mad poets. ‘This division would prove extremely service- able in preventing the sale of obscene pr this purpose they should be provided with tickets, when stopping the newspaper boys, and having thoroughly examined these papers, and discovering nothing improper, a. ticket given to the boy should ‘xempt them from further examination on that day. This division should be empowered to visit the va- rious newspaper establishments in, the neighbor- hood of Nassau street, and scrutinize the proot sheets, and if there is anything that may be deemed libellous or defamatory in any shape in the print; the steam should be blown off, and the editor sum- moned to appearbefore the captain of the division. e captain of this should be by all means a bank- rupt editor, and a good judge of poetry, and one who can boast of seeing betterdays. _ 4th might be stationed at conjunction of Chat ham street and the Bowery. This division could prevent a thousand abuses in that neighborhood. It isqnite necessary that this division should be compoe- ed mostly of bullies and black-legs,men who are well acquainted about the doings in the Bowery. It may be deemed necessary to lave aman at the head of this division who has seen all sorts of times, and who is of a courageoustemperament. The division might iste ebe, the Bowery and East Broadway as well as the eastern section of the city. 5th. This division should be directed to parade around the docks, to keep awake loafers and pree vent boys sucking their stomachs full ot molasses, which hasan evil tendency—to physic them without the advice of the doctor. This division should be provided a certain mumber of dogs to destroy. dock rats No policemen of this division should be per- mitted to set on, or go near, a brandy or agin barrel on the docks. The captain of this should be a man who hasseen considerable of salt water, and who has been around Cape Horn three times, and who can boast of killing some Feejee islanders. 6th, and the last division, should be stationed at the University, or in the vicinity of Washington Square. It might be made up of those who have lived in the neighborhood of Washington Square, and have become insolvent on account of high living and drinking champaign to appear respectable. Much good might result from this division—to pre- vent the stealing of silver spoons and gold watches. {f you should deem it worth while to lay the above before the public, { feel certain that some good might be the result. Being much op d with the duties of my office, or else I would extend my remarks upon the expediency of adopting the above. Sir, I am your's, With the greatest respect, Joun WiskHEAD, | Mayor of Clamville, Capital of Coney Island. Feb. 4th, 1843. Newark, {Correspondence of the Herald. | Newank, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1843, The Olao Legislature—The Currency—Hon. Mr. Parker's Land Bill—Progress of Neurology— Great Effort to encourage Cost Johnson in his En- deavors to Effect the Assumption of State Debts— Removal of Postmaster, §c. The divisions in the democratic majority in the Ohio Legislature, appear to be ina measure healed, and the policy to be adopted with regard to the cur- rency would seem to be, (as1 predicted before the session commenced,) a modification of the law pase- ed last year, and generally known as “ Latham’s Bill.” A bill containing the proposed modification is now under consideration, and will, I have no dédubt, become a law. Will it have any practical effect? Iam inclined to think that it will not have the slightest. Investments so much more profitable can now be made of money, thatany one who would invest it for legitimate banking purposes must be in- deed foolish. Iam, therefore, of opinion that the ten banks which remain to us in Ohio, will be all we shall have for some time to come, and also that, in ordinary 4, they would be amply sufficient for the purposes of t and commerce. A bill now under consideration in the Senate, and introduced by the Hon. James Parker, the Senator from this distriet, will, if passed, have more effect in relieving the people of Ohio of the distresses which they complain of, and will pay off more of their debts, than perhaps any measure within the sphere, ol legislation. It provides for the appraisement of lands when taken on execution, at which appraise- ment the creditor must take the land, or such part of itas will satisfy his debt, subject at any time within one year to redemption by the debtor. It is at the option of the creditor to levy or not on the land; but when once the levy is made, he must take it at the appraisement, unless the debtor chooses to pay him otherwise. ‘The bill is almost exactly simi- lar to laws now in force in Masssachusetts, and believe Connecticut. If it become a law, the debt- ors of Ohio will pay off their New York creditors in lands, | Neurology,Phreno-Magnetism,&c., have been at- tracting much attention in our city for two or three weeks. The Rev. J. P. Stuart lectured on Neurolo- gy to crowded houses, and succeeded in convincing many very sceptical persans. Several gentlemen, residents of our city, in theirattemptsto satisfy them- selves ou that subject, have made very successful ex- periments in Phreno-Magn ceeded the Rey. Mr. Stuart, and will remana week or more, longer. Dr. P.’s subject (who is a young man of some little cuitivation of mind more than we usually find in persons thus engaged) is fond, when in magnetic sleep, of spouting @ /a Shakspeare, and seems emulous of the glories of Macready, Kean, and Forrest. As Dr. Parnell confines himeelf to this one subject, and as the orocular sayings of this sub- ject are of a castso theatrical, his expenments have served to unmake many of Mr. Stuart’s converts.— Apart from this, wed) have been Yosity aususing The assumption by the National Government of the State debts, is attracting more and more atten- tion with every coming day, in this quarter. A great meeting, without distinction of party, was held at the Court-house, on the 4th inst,, at which a se- ries of resolutions advocating such assamption, was introduced by the Hon. William Stanberry, former- ly a distinguished member of Congress. The reso- lutions were strenuously opposed by the Hon. B. B. Taylor, and the Hon. B. Briggs, and supported by the Hon. Mr. Stanberry in aspeech of distinguished ability. Daniel Duncan, Esq., having intimated a desire to address the meeting, and the hour being late,a motion to adjourn until the 11th inst. was car- ried. ‘The whole coarty will doubtless be aroused and pour into our city co be in attendance on the ad~ journed meeting The whigs ore generally in favor of oa ion, and the demoerats as generally o d rah Gu the d cho ihe contending parties Wit meet in batie array on that question, whieh ere long will bea rallying cry, most probab y, in all the indebted States; but, heaven grant, thatit may be ineffectual in its endeavor to destroy the credit of the whole ion. mavfalon M, Caffe, Esq.y has been removed from the office of Postmaster at Newark, and the Hon.
