The Stock Board have to-day reduced their fee for ad- mission, from $850 to $200, by a unanimous vote. ‘The Massachusetts Legislature have the following reso- lution before them, and it is sincerely to be hoped that it will pass into a law. The present system of confining everything to the caprices of bank officers has wrought disaster enough, and it is high time that stockholders should at least have the rightiof knowing how their pro- perty is managed:— “ Ordered, That the committee on Banks and Banking, consider the expediency of a law to compel the several banks in this Commonwealth, to make a monthly publi- ion: in two or more public prints, of all the debts, cre- dits, loans, and issues, together with the names of such persons as may be indebted to said banks, either in en in- ividual, or corporate capacity. The collection of taxes in the several States where they have been levied, procved exceedingly slow, even for those which ate necessary to support the ordinary expenses of the government, and afford an index of the impractibility of obtaining new taxes for the payment of debts. In rela- tion to this matter the State of Maryland affords an instance in the report of the Treasurer, showing the amount of taxes remaining unpaid for the last year, a8 follows: To rae Howoraste tue House or Devecates The Treasurer furnishes the enclosed statement, in obe- dience to their order of the 14th instant. The amonnt by the statement, represented to be now due on account of the direct tax fer *41 and °42, is the gross amount due in the contemplation of the supplement, chapter 161, of December session, 1841. It is Breatly more, however, than was understood by any of the county authorities to be due, except by the commissioners of Anne Arundel. In the original act (chapter 23, of March session, 1841,) no definite time is fixed for the payment of any but the tax for 1841. The 52nd section requires the subsequent taxes to be levied with the county levy, and collected by the collectors of the county levy, and at the same time and in the same manner. The 531 section ret ofesses to fix the time fc ing the as to affect it by | aly reler- only to the tax for “41, be m trath applicable also to future tuxtes ; and in that case, the tax for "42 would perhaps in every county in the State, be payable by quarterly instal ments Ist March, Ist Jane, Ist September, and Ist Decem: ber, 1843.
