« “THE NEW YORK HERALD. _ TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. Teg leaveto give notice tothe AMERICAN PEOPLE, of all classes and conditions, that I am making prepara- tions to republish, in the cheapest style, and in the week- ly quarto form of newspapers, a diversified ond valuable selection from the RELIGIOUS LITERATURE of Chris tianity, produced by the men of genius belonging to every sect during the last two hundred years. ‘The reason for attempting such a project is plain. Ma- terialism, infidelity and immorality, of all kinds, have of late been industriouuly circulated throughout the country under such imposing names, and to so great an extent, that something must be done to revive the ancient spi rit of Religion ani Morals. Lecturers of all kinds—so- phists on every subject—the worst and wickedest litera- turevf France and England, re-produced in the cheapest forms, have demoralized the age—and upset all the esta- NEW YORK, MONDAY MORNING, JANUARY 30, 1843. a HE BLACK Liv NEW JERSEY RAILROAD AND TRANS PORKTATION COMPANY. These se- lections will not be on religious controversy—but such as treat on practical piety—on good works—and on the ge neral principles of Christianity, without the bad spirit of sectarianism. To carry out this project well, I possess a large printing establishment, and the Henao, a daily newspaper, of thirty thousand circulation, now considered the principal advertising organ in the country, capable of giving throughout the Union intelsigence of these works as they appear. This Printing Establishment comprisos 10 presses, 50 printers, 10,000 pounds of type, anda consump: tion of about 800 reams of paper, of all kinds, per week. We have every means in our ‘power to carry this pro- ject intv operation—and we believe that the American public is ready toaidand assist any man, who will throw himself into the breach, and endeavor to revive the an- cient piety, virtue, and principles of our forefathers, in opposition to modern scepticism and immorality, which are stealing stealthily over the present generation, under the masks of geology, mesmerism, fourierism, finance, neurology, transcendentalism, human perfectability, and the whole train of modern philosophy and light literature. PORTRAIT OF PETER REIERSEN. \ Perer Reiersen, THE Dane. excellent engraving of this notorious “financier,” and is presented to the public in order that they may know his person when necessity calls for; such knowledge. Hestands about five feet nine or ten inches, lis genteel in his dress and person, and speaks French and German fluently, and very good English, although the German accent is perceptible in the latter. The above is an At the meeting of gentlemen at the Cu/é Tortoni, 130 Broadway, last week, nearly one hundred were present, and after the usual preliminary ceremonies, a chair was placed in the centre of the room for the occupation of those who had been sufierers by his talents, when Captain Josepu Exxis, of Brooklyn, related the following operation in which this Reiersen was the principal:—In the year 1842 Capt. Ellis met with ‘Capt. Jord, the commander of a Danish vessel, at Brooklyn, who wasacquainted with the vicinity of his birth and parentage, and having a sister still living, as he supposed, somewhere in the kingdom of Denmark, he incidentally spoke ot it, when Capt. Jord stated that he knew her well and the part of the country in which shelived. He informed Capt. Ellis, who is a Dane by birth, that one of his brothers and sisters were deceased, and also that the husband of his sister (whom Capt. E. had not seen for many years,) was dead, and she was in extreme- ly moderate circumstances, He also stated that he was about to return to Antwerp and would take any communicaiion that he sired, and bring an answer when he came back to this country. Letters were written, and de- on his return Captain Ellis received a reply trom his sister, stating her circumstances, &c. Through the advice of his wife, he then concluded to send his sister the sum of $50, which in that country would render her much aid. about to obtain a draft on Copenhagen for tha‘ amount, and was accidentally brought into the ac. He accordingly dooked quaintance of Peter Reiersen, who informed Captain Ellis that he could draw on his father in that city for any ordinary sum, he having recently forwarded a eargo of tobacco to his care for disposal. Captain Ellis having previously applied to the Danish consel of this city for a draft, and not being able to obtain it, placed reliance on Reiersen’s statement, and obtained a draft forthe amount, paying $35 in cash, and giving his note for $15, made payable as soou as he ascertained that the draft had been accepted and paid. But a few daystranspired, when Reiersen sent for the amount ef the note, but Captain Ellis re- fused to pay it, except in accordance with his agreement. As time rolled round, he received an answer from his sister, stating that she had received his letter containing the draft, with feelings of gra- tification and gratitude ; but on presenting it for payment, she was astonished and disappointed, on being informed that the drawer, Peter Reiersen, had no funds in the hands of the person on whom the draft was made payable, and that in addition, she was subjected to the expense of postage, &c., which Captain Ellis in his letter had stated he paid to Reiersen at the time he obtained the draft. Thus was this poor woman deprived of the kind off-ring of a long absent and honest heart- ed brother, through the act of Reiersen. In afew days after, Captain Ellis met him in the street, and asked if he intended to pay the money back, when the tollowing colloquy ensued 1— Carr. Extis.—Do you intend to return me the money you robbed me of ? Pere Retersen.—! have had no return letter yet; ven I does, I vill tell you. Etxis.—Do you know this handwriting that I hold here ? Perr.—Y ee-e~I have seen ft pefore; but the letter is not to me. Ettis.—Ne, you scoundrel, but it is from your father, on whom you drew the draft, and who says you have no money with him, and that he sent you $20 soon after you came to this country to help is very insulting toa gemman of my standing. Ex.is.—You cheating scoundrel, you, if you do | not pay the amount of the dra(t I will take it out of your hide, and thus make an example of you, in or der to warn other honest hard-working seamen of your practises. The captain did not put his threat in execution, however, but had Reirrson arrested and taken be fore the police, but owing to the lack of the affida vit of the person on which the draft was made, it was considered doubtful whether he could be con vieted of traud, and the case was dismissed No. 2 The next gentleman who presented the “ chair of explanation,” was Mr. French printer, of 7 Spruce street, late of 148 Nas- sau street, He stated that in September, 1641, nself on olineux, Vel, { don’t know; but I thinks such talk | . ——s Reierson came to his office, and ordered a quantity of circulars of the following character, but never vairl the amount of the bill. The hat was manufactured at an expense of $21, and sent by a boy to his lodgings. He told the boy to call the next day, as he had not received his mo~ ney from the government, but expected it every me ment, when he would cancel the bill. All attempts to obtain the money or the hat proved fruitless, and Mr. T. contemplates obtaining ‘he worth of his lost goods by some other means which will be soon made manifest. No. 4. Next came agentleman representing the estate of HenryC. Hart, 173 Broadway, who informed the meeting that on the 13th of Sauuary, 184), Pete Reierson came into the store called the Bazaar, at the above named number, and ordered a bill gf fan- cy goods valued at 338,50, to be sent to his lodgings, and the cash would be paid. The articles were sent, bat the boy was humbugged, and hen an attempt was made to either obtain the goods or the money, Reierson threatened to kick the applicant out of doors if he did not Pave ienrenpeee: 0. Mr. John A. Denniston, cabinet makez, of 83 Broadway, stated that in 1841, Reierson called at his warehouse and purchased the upper part of a writing desk, which he ordered to be sent to 20 Wall street, and the bill, which was to be paid om delivery, to 29 New street. The desk wan rent, but when ie amount of the bill was called for, Reier- sen was not to be found. Mr. Denniston finding that he could get no money endeavored to, get the desk, but Reiersen stated that he hadsold it, A warrant was obtatned from the Police—Reiersen was arrested, but the wansaciion was sugh that no criminal process could be available, and he was discharged. . No. 6. : During last summer, Reiersen obtained admittance to the hoarding-house of Mrs, Waldron, 181 Broad- way, by representing that he was acquainted with some of the occupants of the house. An article, published in the Courier and Enquirer, caution- ing the public against his practices, attracied her attention, after he had been boarding in the house two weeks, when his bill was presented to him sor payment after breakfast. He atated that he would pay the amount when he came into dinner; but he has nv ver been back since to eat the dinner or pay the bill. No 7 Tn May last he engaged board at Mre. Wright's private hotel, corner ot Broadway and Cedar streets, but before he had been in the house three days, some of the boarders informed her of his character, and she presented him his bill for that short period, requesting him to leave the house. The same day she received the following note, but never obtained the money :— “New Yonx, June 6th, 1949. “Ma Wniont, Present. Mapame— “Your table being well laid out, but not sufficiently supplied, and the desert being very poor, [have concluded not any longer to take my dinner at yourplace. He took board at the Globe Hotel, with awoman whom he represented to be his wife, and when his first week’s bill was presented, vacated the premi- ses, and has not been seen there since. 0,9, In September last, George Leoni, of 114 John street, received a visit from. this specalator on time, and after representing himself as a West India mer- chant, entered into a purchase of portable desks, at four months credit, amounting to $280. He gave Henry A. Harrott (who wassent to State prison on Wednesday tor like practice+) asa reference, and then ordered the goods to be sent to a vessel loading for the West Indies, at the foot ef Burling slip. Be= fore sending the desks, he applied to Mr. Frederick Leisi, of 102 John street, whorepresented Reiersen in such a light that Mr. Leoni was preyented from losing the value or ba Oe 0. In 1840, Reiersen was enabled by some unknown means to charter the schooner September, for Weet Indies and port or ports and home for $1600, the first payment to be made at Havana. She was to be loaded at this port for St. Thomas, and sailed from thence to Havana in ballast. On ar.ival there the captain applied to Drake, Brothers & Co. for the first payment of the charter, when he was inform: ed that no funds had been placed in their possession for payment. The consequence was that the ves sel was detained at Havana for twenty days, at an expense, including port charges, of $163, and on her return to this port not a dollar could be obtain- ed from Pete Reiersen, the Dane, who ehartered the vessel.
