— Atrempt To, Assassivate Mr. CtaY.— Orleans Bee of the 4th inst. says, the citizens were thrown into consternation yesterday pet that An attempt had been made to assassinate Mr. Clay in the Supreme Court. The true version of the sto- Ty appears to be this—While our distinguished guest was leaviyg the Court, in company with Mr. Pres- ton, an individual outside the railing exclaimed “Shute to Henry Clay,” end discharged a pistol above his head, the ball lodging in the ceiling Drevfous is the name of the person in question ; he is looked upon as somewhat unsettled in his intel- Jects. He was immediately arrested, and taken be- fore the Recorder, where the affair was investigat- ed. Dreyfous was sent to prison, the Recorder re- commending that he should be treated with all pos a mildness, as his mind was evidently disorder. Supreme Court or rar Unrrep Stares—Fripay, Jan. 15.—No. 19. The United States, plaintiff in error, vs. William Linn et al. The argument of this cause was continued by Mr. Attorney General tor the plaintiff in error. Mr. Coxe for the defend ants in error, and concluded by Mr. Attorney Gene- ral for the plainuff in errer. Sarorpay, Jan. 14—No. 7. The United States ys. Domingo Acosta—on appeal from the Superior Court of East Florida. Mr. Justice Catron deliver ed the opinion of the Court affirn.ing in all réspects the decree of said Superior Court in this cause. No. 24. John Buchanan et al appellants, vs. Edwin Up- shaw. The argument of thiecause was commenced by Mr. Leonard, for the appellants. Nava.—The Pensacola Gazette. of 31st ult., says:— We learn that on the arrival of the Falmouth, Capt Melntosh found orders awatting him here, re- quiring his immediate return to the Mexican coast. Every exertion has since been used to get the ship ready for sea, and we learn that she will sail in a few days. On the arrival of the Missouri, Captain Newton, of that ship, ordered the Dolphin to Cam- peachy, with a view to the protection of American commerce against encroachments which might grow out of the troubles between Mexico and Yu- catan. The Dolphin will sail in a day or two. On Mon- day we had a great snow storm, which has made heavy sfleighiog in some places, where the snow has drifted into the road to the depth of several feet On Friday night the channel between Kingston and Wolf Island was frozen over, and the frost has been 80 intense since, that horses and sleighs have crossed The winter so far has been a very pleasant one. We have had excellent sleighing for about five weeks—which has enabled our farmers to bring their produce to market with great facility. We now begin to think that the emigration of the squir- rels was not a bad omen of a hard winter—which, in our opinion, is by far the most pleasant and advan- tageous to the country generally—it is true we may require an extra cord or two et wood, but when the best can be obtained in our market at the low price of 63, 8d. per cord, in consequence of ghe good sleighing, we have no reason to complairi=—King- ston Chronicle. Cana Rioters —We regret to learn that there has been lately some further disturbaaces among the laborers on the Feeder of the Welland canal, in the vicinity of Broad Creek. The troubles, how- ever, do not appear to have been extensive—the unemployed men, who attempted to stop the pro- gress of the work, being so few in number, that, on pearance of Baron de Rottenburg, the special rate, backed by the troops, etationed at Dunn- ville, the leaders were taken into custody, and the rabble speedily dispersed.—St. Catharine's Jour- nal. ‘Tue Eartuquake.—The steamer Chieftain was near Mill’s Pot on the evening of the 4th, and about half past nine o’clock the sheck of the e@arth- quake was very sensibly felt by persons on board. The sensation experienced was similar to that pro- duced when a boat runs over a log. The shock was 8o severe at Mill’s Point as to knock down several chimneys. Kt was reported that the earth had sunk in several places near New Madrid. Fine tn Burravo.—The fire this morning was on Green street. The whole of the upper part of three frame cottages, owned by Henry Lamb, were burn- ed, and in consequence of the hasty removal of the effects of the occupants, much of them were injur- ed. The bu'ldings were occupied by Mr. L. Wil- liamson, John Holley, tailor, and Jacob Best, clerk. Teis understood that the buildings are partially insur- ed. —Buffalo Commercial, Jan. 14 Mone oF Tue Fresnet,—The ice has done still further damage to one of the bridge yiers, knocking out the stone so as to almost entirely remove the Support to the wood work on the north side The travelling, we believe, was confined to the south side during the day. We understand that the bridge over the Connecticut at Sunderland, has been swept away.— Hartford Courant. A friend from Ithiea, N. Y. furnishes the follo v- ing particulars:—Two large bridges on the inlet, over which the entire western travel passes, are carried away. The bridge at Clinton street, over the six mile creek, an expensive and handsome one, is carried hg Those on the Cascadilla creek are uninjured. The flats below the village, between the steamboat landing and the Lake, are submerged. Senator From Kenrvcky.- Mr. ¢ rittenden has been reelected to the United States Senate.
