News of all Sorts. Former raom Campeacuy.—Dates are to the 24th ultimo. More than 250 deserters irom the Mexicans were in Campeachy ; they complain of having suf- fered |. uch trom hunger since they landed, and state also that many have died from disease. A genile- man who visited the steamer Guadaloupe, states that the English seamen on board are quite dispirited and diseontented, as well on account of poor and scanty provisions, as of tke ill usage they receive from the Mexican commander of the squadron, Tue Hayrien Diericuvty —According to treaty stipulation, ne Haytien vessel was allowed to ap- neoeisie’ erizhin 9 le of Cuba. A sehooner hav- og intringed this provision, was captured by the Spaniards. In return, the Haytiens captured a Span- ish vessel, found off their coast. It was for this outrage, that the Governor General sent a frigate and several other vessels to Hayti to obtain satistac: tion, the result of which had not been learned at Havana at the last accounts. Loss or Scnooner CoiumBus.—The schooner Co- lumbus, of Cleveland, Ohio, Charles Marsden, mas- ter, on her way from Michigan City, Indiana, to Buffalo, on the 18th day of November, wrecked, to- gether with her cargo, treight and lading, consisting of 32tuerces flax and grassseed; 10 barrels seed, and one tierce do; 11 kegs butter; 4320 bushels wheat; 35 sacks buckwheat flour. The said sehr. was wrecked ubout seventy miles north of Grand Haven, on the east shore of Lake Michigan. The schooner, cargo, &c., abandoned asa total loss. The captain and crew made their way hither, a distance of 110 miles, through deep snow, without provisions, in twelve days. >xow Srorm.—The storm which prevailed here on Tuesday, appears to have been very extensive, and attended with a heavy fall of snow in the inte- rior. The Housatonic train, due at Albany Tues- day evening, did not arrive until noon the next day. The western train due at Albany Wednesday after- noon, had not arrived late in the evening. And the cars west from Albany, on Wednesday morning encountered asnow bank two miles out, and after several hours spen it $ exertions, they re- turned. The n from Springfield did not arrive at Botson until seven o’clock Wednesday evening, and brought nothing beyond Springteld. The train oa the “astera or Portsmouth road, that wasdue at Boston at seven o’clock Tuesday even- ing, did not arrive until five the next morning. Be- tween Springfield and Albany it is probable that the snow is quite deep. Wearuer IN New Orvgans.—Yesterday was al- most a summer day—certainly as warm as one in spring, and of a nature to make men half incredulous asto and snow being aburdantatthe North, or of ice running in our Western river: New patches of grass are visible in all directions, in the vicinity of this place—the trees have quite a desire to bud, and we anticipate ere long to hear the songs of birds in the woods. Such weather is pleasant in the ex- treme, but itis unseasonuble and badly calculated to restore the strength which has been so steadily drawn upon, in those of us who have suffered the heats of the past summer. It is favorable for the poor, who, in such weather need not shrink from cold and shiver in thy from colder reg the first time t expression, * llas for strangers, ron to teed the truth of the y South » of all grades, and Chartres strect, shionable promenade for gaily dressed ladies, resembled the brilliance of a tulip garden in full bloom.—N. Sukctro Magnetic Tet ru.—The Nation L Intelligencer states that Protessor Morse of N York, the inventor of the graph, isnow in Washington, ed his telegraph between two of the committee rooms at the Capitol, the House Committee of Commerce, and the Senate Committee of Naval Affairs, where its operation is shown to any who feel disposed to witness the facility with which two persons, how- ever distant, may converse with each other. This invention has truly been placed among the greatest of this or any other age. The mind is searcely pre- pared to pursue even in speculation the mighty re- sults which are soon to follow the practical demon- stration of the certainty of bringing into the closest proximity, for some of the most essential business of society, the most distant parts of the world. We learn that the subject is betore Congress. Destruction py Fire.—The Madison, Ga. Mis- cellany, of 26th ulumo, say: A passenger in the stage last might, brings us intelligence of a destruc- tive fire, which occurred in Griffin, Pike county, on yesterday morning. ‘Ten or twelve of the prin- cipal buildings, in the heart of the town, were con. sumed, with much property. He is said to have been a worthy young man and had Ee but a few months marnied.—Pittsburg Chroni- cle. Pork Bustness.—The Alton (Ill) Telegraph says: “We understand, from undoubted authority, that ofters have been made by eustern operators to dea- lers in pork in this city, for the purchase of several thousand barrels of Lard. It 1s wanted exclusively to be manufactured into oil.” N Ixvention.—V. Leblanc, of West.
