Those merchants who repudiate a just debt, and then pompously make donations for the benefit of the poor at the approach of winter, must understand that the peo- ple can distinguish between honesty and ostentatious charity. ‘There has been a fair business doing in bills, but to- wards the close the rates rather gave way, and may be quoted as follows :— aie 7 pg cgher 4 1N New Yorn, Pe 39) Sales at the Stock Exchange. 2% Delt&tHudsou —bim 90 % do * the supply thus early in the season, and before anether steam packet the supply will have received a large ac- cession. The trade of the South and West is growing healthily, and the circulation of real capital, not broken bank credits, is becoming daily more free. The growing demand for capital in commercial pur- suits, will lessen the demand for stock investments, in all probability, and the best descriptions—say New York State and City Stocks, Ohio, and Kentucky—will absorb the floating capital seeking that class of investments. This demand has greatly improved since the result of the elec- tions, and has been followed by a corresponding improve- ment in prices. In our article of October 10, we mention- ed the prevailing fears that were entertained lest the party in favor of running in debt should succeed to power, and the depressing effect those fears had upon prices as shown ina table of prices, which table we now republish, adding the rates of sales up te this date, as follows :— Paiexs oy New Yorx Starr Stock. o-6a” 534 per ot . 7500 N ¥ State 7's, joo do 5G, 1000 Indiana Bonds. 6 she Bank Com Second Board $1000 Kentucky 6's, 53 ds 77 markets exhibit no material change | ts—To Liverpool are lower for Cotton, the late en- | ave been made at 3-16da }d per Ib. During the ten days which have since elapsed, all denominations of New York State stocks, it appears, have advanced fiom 2to 8 percent. The greatest advance hastaken place in 5 per cents, which was the last investment. They have now more than recovered the decline which the fears of a wanton increase of debt had occasioned. The city stocks rank still higher. Notwithstanding this rise in New York and other sound stocks, the Federal gov-rnment has been unable to ob- tain any money on its 6 per cent stock, and the Treasury notes have fallen 1 per cent. Afew weeks since they would command } aj premium, they will not bring } per cent discount in any amount, although the amount out- standing is not greatly increased. ‘The increased activity of capital has rendered them no longer a desirable tempo- rary investment; for the banks and capitalists seexing per- manent investment, having all fears in relation to the soundness of New York stocka removed, turn their money intothat channel. Every day increases the discredit of the Federal government. The late tariff, which has very materially injured commerce, has ruined the revenues, and with censtantly increasing arrearages, the depart- ment struggles on with the payments due on the bonds of former years. As long as Treasury notes were ata pre- mium, the government received cash for those bonds. The rate of the Treasury notes now, makes it profitable to pay them into the Treasury instead, and thereby depri all means. Congress very soon meets, when some new measures must be adopted. As matters now stand, the tion, and the trade of the country, es well as the national taith, are all to be sacrificed to the idle phantom of protection, to a class of citizens who are to the whole population as one to 20. ‘The stockholders of the Erie Railroad met at the Broad street Hotel. There was present a vast assemblage of both of this city andthe southern tier. Great enthusiasm was evinced for the prosecution ofthe work. ‘The meeting was addressed by Saut Atrev, Essq., of this city, J. P. Now, we confidently appeal to every honest man in the community whether it would have been just, or expedient, to permit that com- pany, and that great work to be sacrificed by remaining under the control of those who have thrown destruction, “ frightfuland general distress,” and pecuniary fember- rassment along in their path? We know the opinions of our fellow-citizens upo this subject, and if we have handled some individuals roughly, it wus because they deserved it, and ten times more ; and let it be a leng and lasting admonition to all others placed in similar positions to act honestly, and in accordance with the dictates of high moral principle and rectitude. Reckless creatures, who gain possession of a corporation, often disregard all respect forthe property of others, and sacrifice every thing to their own individual profit. This system cannot surely continue much longer. It is the duty of the press to arrest it; and so far as we can, it shall be arrested. Thousands now await the result of this day’s action, at 34 ‘Wall street—let the stockholders bnt discharge their duty conscientiously, and that great work may yet be rescued and resuscitated.
