Fnosr.—Last Wednesday morning, this destroyer of ve getation made its appearance in unusual splendor. A Bean Serare, ano Bane are.—On Saturday, the first of the current month, a son of Mr. Robert MeDo- neld, of Earl Town (not far from Pictou), was sent to ex- amine a potatoe field, to ascertain if any cattlehad broken into it. After proceeding about 20 rods from the house, he was attacked by a she bear with fourcubs. The bear immediately seized hi ad threw him violently on the round. As soon as he rose, she struek him again, aud ¢ fell. When he rose the second time, he attempted to strike her with asmall stick, but she caught him again and tore his head fearfully, aud he was prostrated a third time. Providentially, atthis critical moment, some move- ment among the cubs withdrew her attention from th boy, who seize] the opportunity and sprung over a fe near which the event occurred. ‘The bear instantly fol- lowed, but when she alighted on the fence, it gave way under, and before she could recover, the boy happily ef- fected his escape. When he arrived at the nearest house, he was literally covered with blood, and not astitch of his clothing Temained, except the collar of his shirt.
