Joun C. Cour.—The Sheriff has given directions that the irons placed on Colt shall be removed, and in place thereof has appointed two deputy sheriffs to guard his cell until the hour of execution. His friends and rel: es are to be allowed to see him, but to prevent any thing being given him for self-destruction, one of the deputies is to be present, or within sight, during the interview. ‘Thousands ef applications have been made to the Sheriff to witness the execution, but he has resolved on the only proper course, that is, to allow none to be present except those authorized by law, aud a reasonable number of de- puties to keep proper order, giving the city press one representative each, and those the regular acknowledged reporters. Several gentlemen who visited Colt yesterday state that his appearance and manner is much changed since the re- ception of the letter of Governor Seward, as he had placed great reliance upon a pardon or commutation of his sentence. He looked the very picture of wretchedness yesterday, and talked relative to his fast approaching fate in @ manner not such as would eminate from one disposed to commit suicide. On bejpg questioned as to such an in- tention, when his penknife and razors were taken from him, he said that depriving him ot them would not prevent the accomplishment of such a deed, as he could open a vein with his teeth if he desired, and thus bleed himself to death. New Arrointatet.—A new office will be made by the Legislature as soon as they convene—that is, Inspector of Lard Oil. Who goes for this rich, fat and luscious place? Don’t all speak at once. Murver ano Anson.—A most horrible murder was committed in Suffolk county last week, which was com- municated to us last evening, by the Sheriff of that coun ty. On Saturday morning, the house of Alexander Smith, of Huatiogdon, in that county, was destroyed by fire, and the bodies of the old gentleman and his wife, were found burnedto a crisp in the flames. Upon exami- natiun, it was ascertained that they had been previously murdered, and the house thea set on fire. Suspicion fell upon a German, who had been employed by Mr. Smith a few days previous, and who was missing the morning af- ter the house was destroyed. As his body wasnot found in the flames, there is no doubt tbat he committed the mur- der, and then escaped. ‘The Sherift has offered a reward for his apprehension, and states that he was dressed in a small green cap, with green smock coat, checked vest and green pants, His hair and complexion light. It is to de hoped that such a monster may be arrested, as his only object in thus destroying the lite of two aged citizens, ‘and then burning the dwelling to cover his erame, could have been prompted by no other motive than that of plunder. Our police were informed of the transaction Just evening, aud we trust that every exertion will be made by those of adjuining towns and cities, to ferret out this monster in humaa shape.
