Political Movements in Monroe Cownty—Candi- dates for Congress, Assembly, Collectorship, &c. To Genknat James Gorpon Brnngrt :— Dear Srx,— I have seen nothing in your valuable Herald from thia city, in a longtime. We have many fruitful subjects here, that would interest the tens of thou- sand. of the readers of the Herald, if properly laid before them. Your paper is sought for with more avidity, than any other after the arrival of the eas- tern mail ; such isthe eagerness to read the Herald, among the people here, that I ain very often disap- pointed in procuring a copy of Mr. Moore, your agent in this city, if 1 am unavoidably detained from calling for a short time atter he receives them. All the political parties except Ci in Tyler's, in this county, have made ty couaniny i The waigs have nominated ‘Thomas J. Patterson, a bre- ken-down merchant of this city, for Congressman. Doct. Maltby Strong, of Belchertown memory, a furious Clay whig, and an old New tngland tede- ralist, was the principal opposing candidate in the convention, tor the nomination. Very great dis- ausfaction prevails in the county among the old federalisis, in consequence of his defeat; 1 have understood, that Mr. Patterson, has a:ready com- menced writing out hi; speeches. It elected, he wili be a powertul advocate in Congress tor a Uai- ted States Bank—the assumption of the State debis by the general government—ihe distribution of the proceeds of the public lands among the States—a ugh tariff to detray the My aed of goverament, and produce @ revenue to be dictributed—and last, though not least, he will be in favor of the passage ot a general law by Congress to tax the old maids tor the support of the old bachelois, Fur the assembly, from the centre, the whigs have nominated icobert Haight, Esq., a "lawyer. He is a young man, although | believe he calls .imeelf an old bacnelor. In politics, he is one ot N. P. ‘Tall- madge’s conservative inends, an unchanged demo- crat, and if elected, he will not make a very great etlortto add mapy ‘more to the thousand aud one useless laws im this State. The locotocos have nominated the Hon, Ashley Sampson, first Judje of the Court of Common Pieus of this county, for Con- gressman, and William Buell tor the Assembly, from the ceatre. As the locotocos gnd abolitionists, will not probably succeed in electing any of their candi- dates in this county, I think it unnecessary to say any thing about them. The Tyler men have had two meetings recently in this city. The frst was called to sustain the President in administering the general government in his own way, honestly, faithtully, and judicious- ly, ‘The second was cailed as an indignation meet- ing, in consequence of the insult to the President and Nation, at the Ashburton dinner in your city. Both meetings were well attended, and good resolu- tionsadopted. Considerable of an effort is about being made here by several individuals, tor the of- fice of Collector of the Port of Genesee. Mr, William A. Wil‘es, a man notorious for his abuse of President Tyler and his administration, until quite recently, is making agreat noise about his claims to the office. He has once betore made application for the Collectorship, since the election of Gen, Harri- son and John ‘l'yler, and been defeated. He was so indignant at his defeat, that he abused President Tyler by calling him all soris of hard names, was anxiousto have a pet.tion forwarded to the Presi- dent requesting him to resign his office, and finally turned abolition Doct. Fauikner is making ap- plication to the President tor the office. ‘The Doctor, I should think, would be about the right kind ot a man for the President to appoint. ‘Lhe Doctor is an old republican, supported the President at the election in 1840, and has been his true and active friend eversince. Lf the present Collector, who isa Clay whig, is removed, and the Doctor is not cheated by those whomhe considers his Iriends, he will get the appointment. I would, however, caution the Doctor, not to rely too much upon the protessed tnendship of the Postmaster of tmis city, who is, | fear, playing a double game with the Presi- dent, and with him, tor the purpose of retaining his own offiee. N. B. Kingston. (Correspondence of the Herald.) Kunaston, N. Y., Oct. 10, 1842. The Herald in Kingston—Kingston Ladies in gene- ral—Beauties in particular—Banks and Currency Little Biddle—Trade of Ulster—A Night im the Highlands, §. Dear Sir— To give you any idea of the popularity of your daily epitome of the times in this old Dutch town, I shall not attempt, as you are daily in receipt of the best evidence of its popularity in the increase of your subscription list, which is, after all, the best evidence ot your merit ; for, although yourenemies may cry down the circulation of your paper, you have the witness of its success in the shape of pro- muses to pay in the currency of the land. Kingston 1s a large town, including the village of Rondout, and is settled, or was originally, by the descendants of Diedrich’ Hudson ; and the traveller needs no other demonstration of 1ts Dutéh character than is shown in the construction of its low stone dwellings, out of which are seen to issue some of the loveliest dau; hters of the land—a few of whom Theve seen to admire. The cu.iom of mentioning at least the initials of the names of those who are most conspicuous, I take the liberty of doing. Six of them were on board the ‘“‘ Emerald,” wendin their way to Gotham on Sunday night, accompanie: with their lovers. Julia —— and Sarah —— are daughters of two of our most wealthy citizens, t latter being the belle of Kingston, whose portr should, by the way, adorn the first number of your new Ladies “Belle Assemblee.” How my heart throbs at the thought of her—so sweet and heavenly isher smile! And should this meet her eye, I trust she will forgive the liberty I have taken in saying she is to me an “‘ angel of light,” which sometimes flit across our vision, and then are gone! She is not one of your city belles, raised in the hot-bed of fa- shionable society, but a beautiful plant, raised and ean in the unsophisticated manners of couatry ie: ‘We have two banks located here, besides the shaving shop of Beach at Saugerties, and a sort of branch of the Delaware and Hudson Cai Co. to give usa CeaNs ; how they all manage to do bu- siness enough to pay thair officers, is a mystery to all, except themselves. The fact is, little Biddle’s Ulster money was got up te do you Gothamites— scarcely a dollar of it being now in circulation here. Tt was fooked upon from the start with suspicion, and consequently was handled with caution. ‘There are a great many Irish in oa iout, this being the ter- minus of the canal where hundreds of boats are con- tinually arriving with the Lackawana coal from Pennsylvania ; from here it goes to your city, Al- bany, Boston, and several eastern ports. Were you evera night in the Highlands? There ceunot be a 4 more lovely or romantic scene on the face of nature than the entrance to where “The moon looks down on old crow-nest.” just above West Point. Morris has attempted a _description in poetry, of this singular of na- ture, in walling up the Hudson towards the high heaven; butit has = had justice done it b the poetasters of the day. e’e “Culprit comes the nearest to my notions of its beauties jin description, but 1t remains for some modern Byron to spring up, long after Nat.
