Bu Since my last, three days ago, we have been favored with fine weather for out-door operations. ‘The sales of cotton amount to 3,300 bales, and the market closed last evening, dull at a decline of $c; making a decline of fully cent per pound, since Ist September. Since my last the stock on sale has been increased 3,500 bales, giving us now - 42,500 Dales on hand. Purchasers find it difficult to for cotton. as the demand for exchange is very light, aid it has iurther declined ; sterting is now at par. New York 60 days, 6} to 7 per cent discount, light, 4 to 5 pr cent discount. As yet but few from the North and Ei rope are selling, consequently there is but little to rem and hence the ight demand for exchange. In all proba- ill go still lower, and corte will still fur- , ie arrives, or a demand for exchange springs up tosuch an extent as to enable purchasers to operate more favorably. Specie is what we want, and your capitalists could not do better than send it here to invest it in bills based o ents of cotton. Th Moy | iverpool, brought yesterday $50,000, which good operation as it isto be invested in cotton, andthe purchasers will save about 9 per cent difference in exchange, and this amount is equal to 4° per pound on cotton. Speculators have taken up what little sugar remained on the coasts, and it has fur: ther advanced peeut, which is a full cent on the prices of Ist Septemper. They are now selling to grocers in par- wels of 5 to 10 khds., at 6 to 6} cents for prime. The stock as is usual at this season is very light. In flour there has ‘deen considerable Din sctinity, the'sales in the last three days, amounting to 7000 bbis., which exceeds the receipts. Last sale at $3 37}, which is an advance of 12} cents, and some holders are firm at $3 60. My impression is that on the arrival of a few thousand barrels, it will recede to $3 25, a little extra demand having sprung up in the last three or four days for Mexico and the West Indies. Nothing has been done in provisions worthy of note, excepting some 3000 to 4000 kegs of lard for Havana, the last accounts hav- ing represented that market as bare of the article. [ quote it now at6 to 7 cents, which isan advance. At an auc- tion sale yosorday, 100 shares of Gas Bank stocks ($30 paid) was offered, but had no bidders, and was withdrawn. ‘The cargo of ship Rialto, from Marseills, was offered at auc- tion last evening ‘The terms of sale, specie before delive- ry. 50cases roll brimstone sold at 3 cents; 50 baskets of oil at $3 60; 500 boxes lemons were offered. Sale stopped at $5. and some were afterwards sold at private sale at $5 50. The sale of almonds was stopped at 4 cents. Claret and museat wine in cases, and castlle 903 were offered, but had no bidders. A cargo of about 3000 boxes of lemor expected in four or five days, from Sicily. The cash du- ty system operates hard with the importers of moderate means, most of whom will be obliged to sell part of their goods at auction immediately on arrival, inorder to raise funds to pay the duties with. A few days since a friend of mine received a carga from France, on which the duties amounted to $15,000, and the freight to $3,000, making a cash payment of $18,000, on a cargo from which he can- e the money in three months, unless business should improve very much. It would’ have been very convenient to our merchants il Congress had established the warehousing system ; but it would appear that one object of the late Tariff bill, was to restrict commerce as much as possible, and to protect manufacturers at the ex- pense of every other interest.
