Canada wheat will no doubt be admitted free of duty, the distance, &c. forbidding any competition with the English grower, exccpt in seasons of searcity—but that American wheat, after paying this duty of four pence half penny per bushel, will be admitted in like man- ner, is very questionable—if it is, the result will be very beneficial to Canada, by increasing our carry- ing trade, and the Provincial revenue—if not, the Canada wheat can be shipped and the American consumed here. The latter, as flour is now admit- ted on the same terms as Canadian, and I think there isa duty of but two shillings per barrel on that arti- cle, it is therefore evident that it will be infinitely cheaper to transmit flour, than wheat, thereby en- couraging your own mills. It will be most dil cult to enforce the payment of these duties with auch an extent of frontier, affording every inducement for smuggling, which this duty (raising the nominal ice of wheat) will have a tendency to encourage. These are some of the views that may be taken of more. The defence was conducted by W. H. Mutock, Ese., who called Mr. Archibald Kelly, who stated that there wasa great deal of animosity on the part of O'Donnell ered McAlheny, and that there was no more noise on Vigna than was usual about porter houses, ‘a. H. Pericaew, present Street Inspector of the 8th wi ‘and Stephen Harris, who formerly held that office, doth testified to the latter fact, and Dennis Gillespie stated that McAlheny kept agrocery store as well asa porter house, and that the great secret of the animosity against him, waa that he done more business than all the other porter houses in the neighborhood, including O’Donnell’s. sane pad oni after a short absence, returned a verdict of guilty, and we enderstand that O'Donnell will be in- dicted for Keeping disorderly house, and disturbing the hay or tenced.— Louis Rogers, n Frenchman, entered a plea of guiltyon an indictment for is lary in entering the house of Catharine Lawrence, in Greene street, about two months since, and stealing about $1300 in money. ‘The Court sentenced him to the state prison for five years.
