Home eater ree mee nay Intelligence —Aceidents, dc. Kc, Tue Cecessaten Osenuis Lyxcmiwo Case.—At the last session of the Supreme Court im Loraine co. Ohio, the case of Norton against H. C. Taylor, editor of the Oberlin Evangelist, and others, for the outrage committed two years since, came on for trial. It was brought up by ap- peal from the Court of Common Pleas, and a verdict was iven against the lyachers, and a fine of $650 imposed.— We believe the fine in the lower court was $1,900. Onto River.—At Wheeling,on Saturday, the Ohio river had three and a half feet of water in the channel Goon News ron tue Gattows.—The Hemp crop of Kentucky this year, it is said, will be twice as large as ever before realized. , Lanp O1.—Anatysis.—This great discovery is one o! e J shows, in’ strong co- the results of chemi sei anaes lors, the utility of a high degree of educat'n we have so often contende se f. Arago, the illustrious French philosopher, has for own that inventors are the real benefactors of 1» Stat die propertion, ss ee give the highest departments of sci to the mass ofthe People, in that proportion Jo we secure new inventions and great discoveries. [ct the eitizen reflect, then, while enjoying the light of the lard oil, that the saving he effects in purchasing a gallon of it at 50 cents, instead of a gallon of sperm oll a $ eof the results of science; and let it be an ince ure and maintain a comprehen- sive system of public instruction. This is but a single item, but it alone should cause science to be respected. Chevruel, a French chemist, in some investigations ai fat, discovered that it was composed of two ples, to which he gave the names elaine and stear at they could easily be separated. ‘They posed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; and wherever » predominates in an animal oil, we may be assured of an article capable of eh degree of luminous power. A curious experiment is related by Berrara, which shows that fat may be made artificially; on mixing together one measure of carbonic acid, ten measures carburetted hy- drogen, and twenty of bydrogen, and transmitting the mixture through a red-hot tube, ‘several white crystals were obtained, which were msoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, and fusible by heat into au oily fluid. The following are the relative constituents of lard oil and spermacetti:— Carbon. Hydrogen. Oxygen. Lard Oil, 79 03 1h 422 9 548 Spermaceti, 79 05 116 89 We have heard the fear expressed, that the lard oil will not stand the winter, or will not retain its fluidity in cold weather. This is a| very idle fear. Sperm oil is made in the same way as the lard oil. It is composed of elaine and stearin, and they are separated by pressure upon bibulous paper, which retains the elaine. By the same procesa lard oil is ‘obtained, and winter-strained lard oil will stand the cold weather just as well as winter-strained sperm oil. ‘The success of this discovery is secure beyond all chance, and the corn and swine ef Kentucky will. prove greater sources of wealth to her citizens than would the mines of Potosi. Ax Inrenence: —A school mistress w: Rerance, when.a litle boy inquired, “Did you ever gut drunk and fall into the river?” “Why, no, my child,” she repliod, with some astonishment, “how came you to think ofsuch athing? “Because my grandfather did, and that was what made him a “cold water man.” Garar Destauction of Bacox.—A large smokehouse on the Canal above Alleghany, Pa., was consumed by fire on the morning of the 17th inst.,and sixty thousand pounds ot bacon perished in the flames. It belonged to Mr. Leech of Alleghany and was insured. Vatvastr Ores.—In addition to the discoveries made in mpshire of crude arsenic, tin, fron, zinc and lead ores, t! aluable ore of Titanium has been discovered in the towns of Merrimack and Unity. This article is said to be worth $16 per pound, wholesale, and is used by den- tists and porcelain painters. There is ( reat deal of wealth among the old granite hills of 1ampshire.-- To Dr. Bartlett, ascientific and practical Mgeologiat, who has made acritical and minute surv ey ofthe State by au- thority, are the public indebted for a discovery of this earthly wealth. Sreciat Exections tx Tennesser.—Samuel A. Pickens, has been elected to the Tennessee Legislature from Se- vier couvty, and John B. Cross from Madison, Both are whigs. The locofocos were badly beaten in beth coun- thes, Heart or rue Crry.—It is at length generally admit- ted that yellow fever isin the city, and increasing, but not to a sufficient extent as yet to warrant the conclusion that an epidemic will prevail this season. We have heard of several cases in private practice, among the rest that of Captain Hamilton, of the ship Ellen Brooks, who died y. Ther s but one case in the Charity Hos- terday, and it also terminated fatally.—New Or- jeans paper, Aug. 17. Fish Without Eves.—A Friend has exhibited to us two specimens, preserved in spirits, of the eyeless fish from the Mammoth Cave of Kentuoky, ‘he largest one is from three to four inches long, the general shape of the body and of the head particularly, being that of the catfish. But there is no vestige of any organ of vision, nor in fact does the sense of sight belong to the species. Bred and living in the dark, it is another evidence of the harmoniousness of nature’s works, that they have not a faculty which in their state of existence would be useless.—Philadelphia Ameriaan. Crap Travettina.—One line of canal boats carries passengers from Troy to Whitehall, a distance of seventy miles, for 12} cents, and the other for 6} cents. On some days they have carried passengers for nothing. How long the opposition will last we cannot say, but learn that two new boats are expected daily, which will he placed upon the route. It was late when they had finished their examinations; and as there was no house in the neighbourhood, they encamped out for pi ap od They were somewhat fearful that the Indians Fo i try to plunder their camp, and they kept a good Georgia, the gold out. Inthe early part of the night they heard a rust- ling among the , and a crackling among the ary branches; but whether they proceeded from the tread of Indians or wild beasts, they could not tell. The footsteps, were, however, evidently approaching theirtent. ‘They kept ‘strict, silent, and anxious watch, for some view or sound that should reveal the character of the visitors. Soon they distinguished human voices, and saw the sha- dowy outline of human forms. As the party came nearer, they heard them conversing in French; and in afew mi- nutes Lord Ashburton gave Louis biermeod and his com- panions a cordial welcome tohis tent! Then to complete the grand enterprise now con- templated, the road is to be continued in nearly a direct line, 740 miles farther to the Caspian Sea, which will be across the heart of the Ru: nd from boun- dary to bounday of the Ei ns; this will furnish a very important facility for the transportation of troops, kc. and give the Emperor an immense advantage.
