Hi companion, about his age, who could swim, endeavored save him, but in vain. The accident was witnessed by two men, or rather by one man, and another individual fn hetorm'ofa man. The former called to the latter be- ing him to save the lad, saying he saw him under the r, but could not swim himself. The monster, whose name we have not been able to obtain,replied that hecould swim, but did not like to wet his clothes, and he suifered the lad to perish! If his conscience does not haunt him ne remainder of his days, it willbe because he has none. ‘The firing of cannon yesterday afternoon was by the friends ofthe drowned boy, for the purpose of recovering his body, = however, was not obtained until this morning.—New Haven Palladium. Licursine, &¢.—This summer has been celebrated for deaths by drowning, by lightning, and murders and rapes by negroes. We remember no summer in which there Were so many catastrophes of thia kind. Among the re- markable ravages by lightning in various parts of the country this season, we record the following : On the 26th ult. the house of Mr. John Barnam of Menkton, Vt., was struck, the gable end dashed in, knocking a man out of bed to the floor, without however occasioning any serious injury. In Hinesburgh, the barn of Mr. Martin Leonard was struck, together with sheds, out-houses, twenty-five tons of hay and some grain were consumed. On the 29th ult. six drunkards were together in a shower near Shelby- K ere killed. There was asevere storm New Bedford, Mass. on Tuesday morn- ing. At Fairha ightning struck the house of Mr. Buttrick, but fortunately zo lives were lost. The electric fluid descended from the chimney, and extended to nearly . part of the house, One of the rafters was entirely emoved, and one of the large upright posts in the frame was shivered to splinters, the windows were broken, and the doors unhinged. A bed in one corner of the room was taken entirely across the apartment. The sink and stove in the kitchen were removed some distance from their pla- ces, and a large quantity of glass and crockery ware was en. Qvre Tistes.—Several Sheriffs have resigned in the South and West, because the people have no money to pay debts. We learn from the Parkersburg, Va. Gazette, that Jackson county is in a state of open rebellion. On Mon- day, (court day) 25th ult., the people paraded the streets of Ripley, with guns, clubs, &c., and threatened to ride upon «Fail any man’ who bid for property under two poor its value. Property was offered, but there were no bidders. A Texven Heaxtep Suenire.—The Sheriff of Craw} ford county, Missouri, has returned his papers, books, &c- into the court, and resigned his office, assigning reasons that there is not money enough in the hands of the people of,the county to pay their taxes, saying nothing about the executions, kc. from the courts, and he would not be the instrument of distressing them and sacrificing their pro- perty: Rratty.—All the Tocofoco members of the Te Legislature will resign their eats,provided that the w will also resign.
