James Gorpon Benyerr, Esq.— Sm— I have presumed to address a few lines to you con- cerning the state of things in general in Toronto at present, which you may insert ia your paper with your other correspondence. I have heard that you intend visiting it yourself, on your tour en route through Canada. Politics are low at present. Parliament is to meet on the 8th of September next, and it is also rumor- ed that the Court of Chancery is to be removed from Kingston here ; but Madame Rumor is but a fickle ’un. However, the Chancery Solicitors at Kinston, have signed a ‘ round robin” to desire Sir Charles to let it remain where it is. Henry Sher- wood, E'sq., the Mayor, has refused togo to England to solicit loans for the Corporation, preferring to per- form the duties of that office to jumping Jim Crow in Downing st. The Honorable Francis Hincks has given up the editorship of the Examiner, and it has been resumed by Ontario Stevens, Esq.,and as he has not been long in the editorial chair, (not a desirable one) we cannot judge of his talents yet. We have had no- thing much to amuse us since Nichol’s Amphithea- tre was here, and I “guess” he pocketed a good deal of “hard cash,” (much wanted at present,) as there were about two thousand in attendance every night while it was here. But I see that Mearolinet, “the wizard of the north,” and the rest of the wizard fa- Hy, are advertised to hold a concert. of magical performances at the City Hall, by permission of his worship the Mayor! The drama isin a low, very low state here. A Mr. Jameson opened some weeks ago a small theatre at the City Hotel. There is no regular theatre in Toronto, which speaks a great deal for its morals. . There are afew “belles” in this as well as in other cities, some of whom I should mention (as! see your other correspondents do,) but it is not good to particularise. As this is the time of travelling some “whither,” I would recommend visiters to Canada, especially invalids, to go to the celebrated “Caledo- nia Springs,” which are now beginning to rival Sa- ratoga itself. Parkerhas got a nice, new, circular pleasure railroad in operation, and a variety of other amusements, and I know he will give visiters agood secon Some of the loafing community, I mean gamblers, or acim styled black legs, have even reached thus far. ‘There istwo establishments of the kind here, one called “The Light House,” and another the “Royal Pavilion,” (royal sounds well,) which are daily and nightly frequented.— But fam prolonging a correspondence, which I in- tended should have been but brief. At some other period Imay be induced to use my pen again, but at present, adieu. “A ToRonTowEatan.” Carlisle Springs, [Correspondence of the Herald.] CaruisLE Sprinas, Aug. 4, 1842. Carlisle Springs—Their Situation and Advantages —The Ladies—The Barracks— Officers— Morning Rides. Mr. Benner Dear Sr Feeling an inclination to ruralize, and, hearing that, notwithstanding the hard times, there was a select and very agreeable company at these Springs, so well known in this State, though perhaps never heard of by you before, I formed a small party, and dropped in; with the persons here I had previously been acquainted, having met. The Springs are located 44 miles east of Carlisle, 18 miles from Harrisburg, and about 3 from the gap in the Blue Mountains, known as Sterret’s Gap. The waters are highly ili ar with sulphur ; the hotel isa very fine one and well kept, diurnally, i. e. no loss of appetite till after meals; parlors plea- sant—nocturnal accommodations not so for man, better for beast—ordered a good bed for m| horsbwee-plegied:-to ile hawdeieedtirs erly had thought of myself, my bed being too short te lie straight in, and too narrow for crooks. The bath buildings, both shower and plunge, are in good or- der ; walks interesting—companions, however, add enchantment to the view—roads somewhe hilly, though smooth. Orders of the day—a morning site to the Gap or Barracks—“ quaff the sulphuretted,” the “* rosy” being unfashionable these Washingto- nian times—discuss the various viands spread forth, Beapedtly with vivacity and taste—“ court the balmy,” filling the intervening spaces with whist, ten-pins, scupping, dancing, with real as well as imaginary partners; by the way, not forgetting « sweet little seat between two trees, which is styled a Lover's Seat, being just large enough for two, one jitting on the other’s lap. With one exception, the company at the Springs was very pleasant, as all appeared willing to please and be pleased. This exception was a young man from Carlisle, who, after guaiin the “ rosy” too frequently, intruded himself into the presence of the ladies, and on one occasion had to be transported bodily to hisdormitory. Failing in inflaming the la- dies’ bosoms with the tender passion, he addressed the hired girl of one of the ladies, who rejected his offers of heart and hand. His education has not been neglecte«\, and unfortunately his connextons are very respectable, or more glaring exposures would appear. _ Oar morning ride to the Barracks was delightful— weather fine, companions of our own choice, and all that could be desired.t It was regular review day; the drill and appearance very imposing— met a very fine lady, sister-in-law to the commanding officer, who, together with the officer, were very pleasant and conversative—giving the ladies of our compan’ all the information desired in relation to the why‘s and wherefore’s—were informed some of the offi- cers thought of vi g the Springs ; the masculine department kind 0° wished they would come, and kind 0’ not, fearing the magical effect, of plume, sash, buttons, &c , which are said to be irresistible On our return, stopped awhile in Carlisle; walked around the city to see the lions ; the College was closed ; no life or bustle visible ; about the tavern where once all was noise and tumult, silence reign- ed; the name of the revered “Patria Pater” had reached here in connexion with temperance, and its magical influence swayed as it always has done and should do, its great and glorious principles. Another mornings ride was remarkably pleasant, though a dispeptic might consider the road some- what rough. It was.to the “Mountain House” at “Sterret’s Gap.” Leaving our vehiclee we clambered up the mountain’s side to the observatory, occasion- ally stopping to gather whortle-berries, which, like cages visits, were very few and far between. The path up is very rocky and required some attention as regarded the placing of the shoes. From the ob- servatory there is a commanding and imposing view on a clear day; at the time of our visit the atmos- phere was hazy, consequently the view was limited —Carlisle, though but seven miles distant, was mere- ly discernable. At the tavern, there are various amusements—ten-pina, scup, flying-horses, (all but the horses, ring and hook, &c.,&c.) On returning to the Springs we partook mutually ofa hearty re- past with keen appetites, which the ride was well calculated to excite or at least increase. 1am just notified to take leave of you as we are about to do the same with our company, to return once more to our various avocations. Snooxs. Aaburn, {Correspondence of the Herald.) Avurn, July 29, 1842. Auburn—Its Advantages—The State Prison—Its Influence—The Ladies—Music. Dear Bennet: — If youhave ever made it a subject of serious re- flection, you have not failed to arrive at the conclu- sion that this ame village of Auburn is one of the most lovely places lately struck off. It is beautiful inthe extreme, and I must irrevocably assert that there is not a single feeling, passion or emetion that ever tickles man’s head, heart, liver or gizzard, which has not its appropriate object in the realities of which no doubt this place is composed. Upon catching a distant view of the sturdy State prison walls, we experience the several emotions of gran- deur, regret, lamentation, gratitude and praise, and when we think of the inmates we are apt to return thanks, like the Pharisee, that we are “not as other men.” How consoling it is to find contentment in the miseries and misfortunes of others; and in fact it has always been debateable with me whether men should be more thankfal for what they are, than e No. 91 Broad ax; Broadway, and for mu Sto RS. B.—Masters, ‘at the shortest } for sale at ve Misses and Childrens’ dresses made 10 order ey 61 Liberty street, Berwoss Pave, PERSE & Also, «large assortment of ices by for what they are not. As for myself, my modesty prompts me to take the latter part of the proposition as the basis of my gratitude, since choesing the for- mer would make me an ungrateful wretch—ergo7- your humble servant is a man of small preten- tions. But { was about to say that the State prison wields a tremendous influence here—you can easily per- ceive that a large public institution of this kind must give a decided tone to the place, and its contiguity necessarily imparts those bah and sou) stretching conceptions of morality and honesty which have rendered this place so celebrated. It was ascertained by the last censns that there were more honest men in this place than in any otherwest of the Hudson river, and besides, the people are all independently rich, and live like Nabobs, and hence gauntpoverty, that universal prompter to every thing ridiculous and melancholy, never gives rise to gouging, nor shaveing, nor anything similar. Asa matter of course a place like this must have ladies, and here permit me to run off into a thou- sand ejaculations of ecstacy, and say—now this is no joke—that | consider our ladies the most fascinating creatures ny body ever beheld. There is Miss O—, Miss P——, Miss Q—, Miss R—, and so forth, all systematically trained to the most bewiteh- ing fascination. Among the ladies we can show every variety of beauty. In the first place, we have the Grecian, Roman, Martinique and Dido noses, in perfection--Bulgarian and Titan foreheads, high broad and expansive,or low, narrow and contractive just as you fancy, The beautiful Zangabar anc Colorado chins in abundance; Geleonda and Corn- wall mouths, blushing cheeks, rosy lips, and Angel’s eyes, in perfect profusion—beautiful forms, whew $! we can convince you at a glance that seraphs still walk the earth. We have ladies of the Corinthian, Tonic, composite Doric, and some of the Gothic or- der. And in fine, the architecture of the ladies and gentlemen in general issuch as need not be asha- med of. And here a word for the gentlemen—al- though they have been lately termed “natural cu- riosiues” still, npon a thorough perusal, they will be found to contain much of the sublime and beautiful However, imperfect as we are, we get along with the ladies very well until some of your city gentle- men arrive here, and then of course we stand aside, since in matters of gallantry we have never thought ourselves able to compete with them. If a citizen arrives, our ladies desert us poor fellows immedi- ately, and then solitary and alone we tread the streets with long faces of despondency and implaca- ble anguish, until they choose, by their departure, to permitus to resume our accustomed attentions. Mr. HL a large and extensive dealer in crock- ery ware and brass in your city, is the universal fa- vorite of the ladies here, aad has smashed hearts enough to fill up an ordinary enumeration table. We have been told that he is the leader of the ton in your city. How is itt I wonder if he has yet learned the difference between the noise of a coun- try robin and a bull frog. Itseems he had never made such an ac tion when last here. Then, again, if you wish to hear good music, you may make your way up to Auburn, for amateurs and listeners say that it is the most bewitching har- mony that lives this side of your city. I believe the number constituting the band is twenty-seven, in- cluding instruments, all whole soul and manly fel- lows. Forthe last few weeks there has been an ex- tensive call for good music, and as the band always go out on great occasions, they have been obliged to play the “ Postillion” during that time. They made the tour of all creation last week; stopped at Rochester on their return, and, as I understand, have lately hada call to go elsewhere. Without boasting, however, we can say we have the best music in western New York. But! see my letter is getting to be quite extensive, or | would discourse you into perfect amazement at the genius of our place. Please, then, believe us for the present a re- markable people, and oblige your obedient servant, Puiir Snoperass. New Brighton, [Correspondence of the Herald.] New Bricuton, August 10, 1842. Pavillion at New Brighton—The Young Ladies there—The Balls, Music, §c. James Gorpon Bennett, Esq.— Dear Srmm— While every watering place has found its room in your columns—while Saratoga, Rockaway, and others have seen their doings published in your valuable paper, every one seems to have forgotten the New Brighton Pavillion, of which hitherto no- thing or very little has been said. Is not the spot worth mentioning? Is there nothing to be said in itsfavor? As far as my opinion is concerned, I think quite the contrary. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms large and airy, the dinners as good and as warm as they can be, when two hundred sit to- gether at the same table. The distance from town is quite agreeable (half an hour’s sail), and for the man of business, no other place should be thought of. Of the rides and drives you must have heard al- ready. Staten Island is known for beth, and that justly. What can be more lovely than the road leading through tie woodsto the Telegraph? When once there, the air is so pure, the breeze is so fresh, that one fancies himself a hundred miles from the great city. i 1 To be sure, the society congregated here is not very gay, but was not summer made to enjoy quiet- ness. There are very few young ladies, and of course no flirtations ; but, per contra, we have the prettiest set of young married women that ever mingled together, Some of them look more like. their children’s sisters than otherwise. I shall tell no names, nor even initials. I don’tapprove that mode of violating individual liberty. f Twice there have been attempts for subscription balls, both ot which have proved failures—the com- pee sth se twenty or thirty of. the boarders. — think it is wrong in them notto join the majority, and by that means remunerate the proprietor of the house for his efforts for entertaining his guests, chiefly as they all come to the 4th of July ’s Assem- bly, when they had been invited by him. Since the last five or six days we have a band of music, which would render the evenings more agreeable; but what aband! Each musician seems to be as independent as possible, playing so very false and so much out of tune aste make the dag- fing quite difficult to perform, Mr. Pieris ought to look to that; but enough of that to-day.
