The Ohio Legisiature— Condemnation of the appor- tionment law of Congress Cleveland— The Newark Institute and Rhode Island — The crops, &¢. § The Ohio Legislature met! at Columbus on the 25th inst., and immediately commenced action with regard to the apportionment of the State for choosing members of Congress, by the appointment of a com- mittee of seven members on the partof the Senate, and fourteen members on the part of the House of Representatives, to report a bill for the attainment of that object. Mr. Taylor, the Senator from this district, intro- duced a preamble and resolutions declaratory of the opinion of the General Assembly of Ohio, that so much. of the apportionment law enacted by Con- is requires the Congressional districts to be le, isunconstitutional, null, and void; and that e General Assemply shalt proceed to divide the State of Ohio into single districts, it will not be from any respect to the law in question, but from long es- tablished custom and the preference of the people of Ohio. Resolutions of a similar nature, and very nearly the same in language, with those of Mr. Tay- lor, were also introdued on the same day in the House of Representatives by Mr ppears to be some difference to the propriety of considering any other business than that which relates to the apportion: ment; buta determination to adjourn at the end of two or three weeks ; Mr. Van Buren was received with a great deal of |. Every one, without dis tinction of party, testified the utmost respect for the distinguished gentleman who had honored Cleve- land with a visit, and the addresses (of Mr. Stark- weather to Mr. Van Buren and Mr. Van Buren in teply,) were quite happily conceived. Mr. Van Buren had another opportunity, which he did not fail to embrace, of showing the magnanimity of his ig in terms of deserving praise n his former great political an- tagonist, as a man who has rendered himself “ illus- tnous in the annals of our country.” The decision ia Rhode Island with regard to the charter of King Charles II. has been reversed in the Newark Institute by a majority of two. ceive, therefore, that that unpleasant affair, even ¢ Governor Dorr has retired from the contest with disgrace, is not yet over; but that you may again look for squally times in little Rhody.
