Srrwes or Civiuization.—The Legislature of Pennsylvania have abolished imprisonment for debt. Gaur on Laxe Micittaax.—We learn from Mr. Adams, of the Mlinois, which left Chicago on Thursday last, that afurious gale'prevailed upon Lake Michigan on Friday last, from which itis feared much damage has been sus tained. The Ilino’s rode out the gale injeafety at Mil- waukie, but a gentleman who crossed the peninsula from Chicago, and took the Ilinois at Detroit, says the new brig Richmond, Dorchester, master, and schr. Indiana, Capt. Dorr, went ashore somewhere between Michigan sity and the former port. Both of these vessels have full cargoes of grain, and consigned here, we believe. teamer Chesapeake was near Chicago when over- the gale, and encountered the worst of it. On entering that port she ran foul of the pier, carrying away her wheel house and injuring her wheels somewhat, but finally got in, fe These are the only items we are able to gather. Stave Kinuine ix Mosice.—Lieut, Smoot of the reve nue service, killed aslave of Mr. Shackelford, at Mobile, on the 9th inst., by shooting him in the back of the neck. ‘The slave, who was a desperate villain, attempted to rob the Lioutenant the evening before, while riding into town, but did not succeed, and was subsequently appre- hended and placed in confinement. It was in attempting to escape that he was shot, on being told to stop by Lieut. Smoot, and giving an insoicnt reply. Friar. tx Nonwicn.—We learn that the large cotton fac- tory of the Thames Manufacturing Remneny, situated at Greenville in the town of Norwich, and principally or wholly owned by Wm.P. Instruction and Amusement! {G- EXTRA NEW WORLD !—« Summer and Winter in the Pyrenees,” is the title of a new and valuable work Mrs. Ellis, well known as the captivating authoress of“ Family Secrets,” “Women of England,” “Daughters of England,” &c. It has just been published in England, in a volume of 300 pages. It is very pular, and has had a great run in Great Britain, and fe full of delightful scenery, manners and customs, adventures, historical in- cidents, and anecdotes of this hitherto unknown portion of Europe. The first American edition of this interesting work will be published on Tuesday, June 21, in an Extra Number of the New World, and will be sold at the low oe of 10 cents; 12 copies for $1, 28copies for $2, and 100 copies for $6. ’ Price in England, $2.50!!! Who can- not afford to read at this cheap rate ? SHERMAN’S LOZE. WATER PROOF—They had their match yesterday the fire that took place at the depot, 106 Nassau street. ‘This is the first time they have failed after curing multi- tudes of coughs, colds and headache. However, the Doc- tor don’t seem to mind it much, he has tco much enterprise to be so essily disheartened. Go you that are afflicted and see that you get cured by Sherman’s Lozenges. (G@- THE ANCIENTS, WHO PRETENDED TO be great connnoiseurs of beauty, were pleased with nar- row foreheads; red hair, and red brows that joined over the nose. Cut ladies of the present time, would feel in- clined to be out of humor with those who would praise them for such graces. Let those then, whose hair is of this description, or when it is prematurely falling out or turning gray, oe Oldridge's Balm of Columbia, preparcd by Comsiock & Co. 71 Maiden lane, New York, and se- cure to themselves.a head of hair which would suit the most fastidious. Notwithstanding the inclemency ‘of the past week, these baths have been visited by hundreds, who were not less gratified at the extent and comfort of the es- tablishment(magnificent as it is), than by the kind atten- tions of Mr. Thomas, to whom the citizens are deeply debted for its general arrangements, and inimitable man. agement. Q@ THE AMERICAN MUSEUM HAS BECOME the great centre of attraction in the city, so far as amuse. ments are concerned. Such an immense and almost end- less varicty of novelties as are put forth here for 25 cents, will always ensure full houses, and the neatness an? good order which reign throughout the establishment, induces the attendance of the most refined and fashionable classes. At night this place presents the most magnificent appear- ance. The performances this week are rare, as will be seen by the advertisement, and the balloon ascension from the garden on the topof the Museum, adds much to the host of attractions. THE SACRED CONCERTS AT THE NEW York Museum are os, every thing. Theone last Sun- day was most respectably filled, anda most delightful and refreshing one it was. Several of the most admit passages from the great masters were given with admirable feeling and effect. Many ridiculous rumors are afloat in relation to the city finances, the basis of which seems t» be the simple fact that the approaching payments due by the city may have to abide the decision of the court in relation to the results of the late election. Many large failures have taken place, some in the iron business, and mostly in the dry goods trade. One large firm, recently formed, has made a bad failure; one of the firm was connected with a large Liverpool cotton house that had a branch in Savannah, and which stopped last year. Losses on cotton shipments, the fall of goods, and the difficulty of procuring remittances, are among the Jeading causes assigned. The new gold mine lately discovered in Georgia, on the lands of the Hon. J. C. Cathoun, proves to be exceedingly prolific. The yield for 18 days was $6,027. The words “ State of Massachusetts,” were very ingeniously inserted at the top of the bill, and the word “ Boston,” was printed over the words “ five dol- lars,” and again underneath those words in the centre of the bill. It was printed on a New York plate, dated Jan. 10, 1840, and signed W. Adams, Cashier, H. H. Ellis, Presi- dent. ‘The state of the currency in Mobile is bad indeed, ang among the worst of its effects is the deterioration of the public morals, in relation to the fulfilment of contracts and the payments of debts, The banks of Alabama have Mooded that State with an immense quautity of their isredeemable promises. These things promised Instead of doing which thefpank that uttered them refuses, and has refused for five years to pay them at all in money, ani for exchange will take them only at the rate of 30 per sext discount. This the people have endured until the oppression becomes intolerable, and when the banks ofthe surrounding States have returned to specie paymexts, those of Alabama appoint delegates who meet in conver tion an’ resolve to check on the east et a premium, not to excee! ten per cent, to an amount that would reduce the circulation of the Alabama banks to a little over $1,400,000, That is, instead of paying their debts they have deliber- asely resolved to rob the public of ten per cent of that which is due them. At the date of the last return ofthese banks their circulation amounted to $7,099,929; the de- preciation was 10 per cent ; the depreciation is now 90 per cent—notwithstanding that the s is nearly all bor- row It might be fair to infer, ther , that the cireu- lation is now $15,000,000, but we will call it $19,600,000 "+ This the banks i It has fallen on the hands of the commu: involv- ing a loss to the publ cipled utterers of this poper now resolv cent discount for releeming the remainder, which dis count will amount to $1,000,000, which will come directly outof the pocket of the planters. This shameless and outrageous resolution is reported in different quarters as a great good conferred by the banks upon the people. The five banks of New Orleans having sustained them- selves, and those of Kentucky on the Ist inst., it becomes imperative for those of Tennessee to return to specie pay- ments on the Ist of July. Much doubt seems to exist as to their ability to do so, particularly the Union and the Plan, ters’ Bank. These two concerns, we believe, have made no return since October Jast, at which time they stood as follow, Convitiow or tHe Union Bank ov Tenn wens’ Bank or sh PSseR, AND THE Bills, Suspended Debt, Stocks, Due from banks, Real estate, bbery and expense, Bank notes, pectic, 4,053,714 4,118,315 2,637,404, 2,248,300 65,513 16,4382 521 7.100 Cireulasion, Deposites, $4,093,711 $4,110,315 This presents a weak condition, and from the rates of ex. change which have since ruled in Nashville, it may be supposed that the banksare in a much worse condition now than then.
