All these and a great many more “ too numerons to particularize,” lovely young ladies with their lively flashes of wit and humor, render a spice to our society and serve to make up for the young gentle- men who stand about the room, and look for all the world as though they had been stealing somet which they had secreted in their, coat tails were afraid of moving for fear of being detected. But I think I have written enough for once, and if this should chance to meet with a favorable recep- ould I remain here much longer, give resting in my next. Ovr hotels are doing a fine business, especially the “Monongahela,” the “Exchange,” and the “Merchants.” The former fine building fronts on three streets, and is the point of landing from the National Road by Brownsville, East, and for those also from the Ohio, West. LEstrancern emez Matson. Saratoga. (Correspondence of the Herald.] Saratoga Spriv June 1, 1842. The Weather—The Springs—Their virtues and rela- tive merits—The Pavilion—Its Excellence, §a. Mr. Eprror: ‘The self same weather that blasts the fruits and flowers, kills corn, and seathes potato vines, has a most inimical effect on old Saratoga. Bloods and beauties, retired millionaires, and superannuated corporals, where are ye? Must ye wait till dog days ere ye quit those dusty avenues? Have these syl- vain shades, these sequestered retreats, these healing fountains, less attractions because your hurdy gurdy city is a trifle less intolerable than usual at this sea- sont While youlag, Fashion is languishing, Cu- pid is sucking his thumbs, Mirth grows dyspeptic, and Blue Devils lord it where revelry should rule.— ‘The sound of a footfall in a hotel is as bad as a ghost in a castle. Shall I say anything about the Springs ?—those hackneyed but ever inspiring themes. Is it not er of increasing wonder that waters of such qualities, should year after year, in this particular spot, without diminution, and with little change, gush from the bosom of the earth? Where is the source of these Elixirs? In, what deep hidden re- mixed and distilled 2 What intelli s—Wwhat subtle chemists parcel se ie Sa ingredients? How are they charged with that potential essence which solves and suspends their mineral components, and by its expansive energy drives thom up to the lips of disease, and flavors them for every palate? These are speculations which must occur to every mind, and that always. There isso much rivalry here in respect to Springs, so much clanship as it. were, that it is difficult te make any discrimination without giving offence. Congress has the oldest fame, and well has it been deserved. Whether it possesses all the active pro- perties peculiar to it in its hey day, I will not pre- sume to say. But for the sake of its reputation, one may well wish it were less open to suspicion by itsconstitution. If it sprang op, ran over, and ran away, gallon on gallon, hogshead on hogshead, no Plockhestl copld rater, the ally ery of |“ salted— salted.” But we must be content with it as nature has made it, and sooth to say, the character of its proprietor fully avouches for the character of its waters. ‘The Spring has been much improved lately by the introduction of a new curb—is purer aud stronger—yet itis rather heavy compared with the racy Pavilion. ma The Pavilion !—here isa fountain whose delicious tribute we owe almost entirely to individual enter- prise. It is an unique -ane plus ultra—in the way of a Spring. Its globulas glisten and dai in the goblet, penetrate the palate, cool and quicken the stomach, clear the head, and help a body over a debauch, ina manner very remarkable, to make the very smallest climax. Seltser water may be clearer, but itis tasteless in comparison. You may drink the Pavilion, not only without gagging or wriggling, but with real pleasure and indubitable profit, I say, waiter, bring us a bottle of that wa- ter; nevermind, though, 1’ll down to the Spring and plunge my headin. ‘The Pavilion is now in the hands of D. McLaren, the individual most active and efficient in the ope. rations which ended in le peons tient, anda person apparently well calculated to do justice to the Spring and its frequenters. He is expending not a little in rendering it attractive, and with laudable judg- ment. There is no lack of accommodations for visitors here. Hotels abound, and as the crowd augments, the whole village becomes one great caravanserai. Asis the custom, [must say of the house where I am esconced, the Pavilion, that it is a most comfor- table home without any quacking pretension. After the renovation which Mr. Cross has instituted, it is koi sweet, and elegant as any body could lesire. We have had a continuity of showers which have been of great advantage to this and the contiguous region. The cold weather which had so nearly paralysed the vegetable kingdom has mollified, and Ceres stands a betterchance. Still salads and lugu- minous sauce are at a premium. “ Jack, your wife is not so pensive as she used to be.” “No, she’s left that off,and turned ex-pensive.”? O.
