S-ales Bauk wine, 0) tue Lallin siveks. Lonioe and Amsterdam houses altogether lose near $75 000,00 by thefallof these stocks. Now it is clear that if thy can induce the Federal Government te interfere, and ty some act of legislative assumption or otherwise, raise the price of the State stocks but 50 per cent only, that they ceuld afford to make it a present of the $12,000,000, which it wants. Bues, Palmer, Cryder, Willink, Hope & © Rothschild, Denniston, aad the whole host of faan with the special minister at their head, he le pro positions, based upon the gcound here marked out. a treaty was entered into for the $3,500,000 of stock off.red by the Secretary. Mas we have stated above, the market value of that stock is 85.48 per cent, and those houses took it at par,on condition that some action should take place towards restoring state credit, they would lose $435,000, Bat the mere anticipation of such a measure would send stocks up sey 10 perjcent.,and they would be the gainers by $10,000,000, even if nothing eventually grew ort cf{the atterpt. This effect has in some degree deen produced elready, by the rumors that have been put ofloat, The stocks are, howevi already falling back to their former prices, in conscquence of the suspension of the negotiation, there being no pos- sible way in which the federal government can aid the States. A sale of teas took place to-day. The particulars will be found under head of “ State of Trade.” Domestic exchanges do not materially vary. The rates are as follows :— y Baxx Norge an Domzsric Bus. It is a singular eircumstaace that, al- though during one half the year foreign exchanges are in favor of the United States, and specie flows in, yet uniformly the inland exchanges are against the agri- cultural sections, ard in favor of the last. This un- doubtedly arises from the fact, that although Europe oc- casionally buys less of us then she sells to us, yet about ‘as often the halance is on the other side ; but betweeo New England and the south and west, the exchange is uniformly in favor of the former. This ¢ffect may, in a great degree, be ascribed to a high tariff in co-operation with the paper system, which we shall endeavor to wake ‘appear. Among the numerous fallacies disseminated by the advocates of oppressive taxation, in the shape of high duties, is, that if the producers of agriculture pay our own manufacturers double price for their fabrics, that those mannfucturers will consume double the agricul- tural produce. Now, if we exemine the quantity of ag- ricultaral produce taken by Massachusetts from the other sections, and the quantity of the same articles ex ported to England, and compare them with the manufac- tured goods taken from those sections, we shall find that if cur agriculturaliste are to depend upon home industry for their support, they must inevitably perish. The naval stores sent to Boston are hot on ac- count uf the manufactures, but fer the use of ships en- goged in foreign trade, transportation of cotion, &e. te Europe.
