Distris ait. 1—Cross Action for J ac Kaapp, who occupies the lower ite Norfotk street, and Mrs. Ann Cooke, who cecupies the upper part of the premises, appeared in Court both Swearing they had been assaulted and’beat oy each other. Cooke swore that Knapp struck her first an Pp swore that Cooke struck him with a pole, and so it went criss-cross, back wards and forwards until neither (court or jury could tell what was what. Cook swore that Kaapp was a pa ate and violent man, and Knapp Swore that Cooke wasa ditto, ditto woman. A little boy whe saw the “scrimmage,” 6s he called it, swore that Cooke used the pole very “savage: ™ gbout Knapp’s popes. Another witness who resides in an adjoininy jouse swore that Cooke swore and raved, and handl the pole with all the skill of a native of Erin, and finally making e full brush and lance-like pass, ave him @ “bulger” en the side of the nose that st the claret in fine order. The jury of course ceuld not agree and they were dis- charged as well as the parties. Forfeited Recognizances —Francis J. TO, This decrease has taken Bae at that season of the year when the banks usually expand. The cash liebi- Lties of the banks are now $10,364,45 and the cash assets $6,107,112. This, inthe aggregate, shows a considerable degree of strength,‘ and such as ought to enable the banks to resume without delay; bat it is evident that all not the same stability—some of them areexceedingly week, and it is no doubt the influ. f these which prevents the strong ones from re- gat once. Itis highly probable that one or two of these will be obliged to close up, as the first of Sep- tember, the time fixed by law for resumption, approach- es. The contraction necessary to resumption in the southern sections is now severely felt inthe markets of the north, in the falling off of the spring business. The goods retained in the country for consumption, duriizg the present year, will no doubt be anich leds than tistial, while the exportsof produce must be great in quantity , if low in value, ‘Weobserve in the Parliamentary reports a statement of Mr. Hastie, the member for Paisley, in which the pro- duction and value of wheat, corn and barley in the United Kingdom is given.
