Ma. Epitor— Yesterday, aheavy ram was made on the Chesa- peake Bank, over which John S. Gittings, Es presides. Its notes were refused in the morning by the other city banks. This at once gave the alaras, and I am told, at a few minutes before three P. M., some holders of notes were refused a redemp. tien of them in other bankable funds. There has eling in the matter. Early in the day, the other institutions shoved off the obliga- tions of the Chesapeake, and on getting rid of them, put up at their counters the watehword—repudi tion. As you are aware, the State is indebted to this bank $167,000. Its President being the Com- missiouer of State Loans, and fostered by his loco- foco 3tate administration, negotiated too deeply. ‘Thus with impunity has he been forsaken in the hour of tribulation. Gre the misery caused by the United States Bank failure, it may be doubted whether the local distress caused by the Girard is not equally as great. The United States Bank capital was much heavier, but it was mostly owned abroad, whereas the Girard stock was all owned at home. ‘The following table will show the sufferers by each in- 7000800000001 Freavany 25, 1941. ve a A. = FOR LONDON? splendid packet GJ Grosvenor, Edmd A Wetmore,Henry White Sam’l B Ludlow, WS Hommond, 7 Fortitude, fm Charteston bound to Havre, 15th inst. lat 92 57, Foreign Ports, an, of Salem, from Maranham—the It is also full of the tales of Packer F —The jp MEDIATOR, Captain Chad- those good things F wick, wilt wail as above, her regular di F and eabia ‘or ater, hav jations, a on board, or to the a: T HERD: FOR LIVERPC Thomas Beekman Pana, Jan Sth—Are » United States Ports, wis Port, Jan 2th—Arr Palm, Boston for Philadel- la, Philadelphia tor Boston; aid thore reportdd yes- Lorenzo Burrows inderwoed, Amos P Granger Francis N Mano John P Bellinger Samuel W Jones Judiah Ellsworth, J’n Knickerbacker David M Chapin, Baron 8 Doty Dex’r C Bloomer, Garret Sackett David Rumsey, Ezra 8 Sweet, Benj G Ferris, Hen B Northrop, David Russell Ira A Paddock, Ja John M Holley, rN JOL—New Ltie—Regi George Gould, T' r Thomas Smith, Alex’r C Gibson, Sail as above, her regular day. t having, secommodations nocqualled Fer freight or past oardat Orleans 20! The capacity of the road to transport coal to the extent of one million tons per an- num isundoubted. The small quantity hitherto brought is owing to the fact that roads leading to the mines, with which the Reading road is to connect, do not run this winter ; hence there is no coal te bring. A sale of teas took place to-day, the details of which will be found under the head of “ State of Trade”—also some sales of rval estate. The feeling in the money market exhibits very liltle improvement. The banks are disposed to do but little. At the Bank of New York, and others, at which this, was discount day, after unusually long sessions of the boards, but very little paper wasdone. A creat deal of prevails in relation to the late forgeries—the aggregate of which may be $60,000. It is mostly of jobbers’,and auc- tioneers’ paper, a description of which the bunks have of andthe losses fall mostly on those brokers and capitalists, who have taken the paper at usurious rates. The feeling in relation to “ repudiation” in Michigan is strongly indicated in the vote inthe State Senate, re- Jeeting resolutions in favor of acknowledging the State debt. The resolutions offered by Mr. Fuller, were us now doing an excell he It thus appears that out of a capital ef $5,000,000, near $2,000,000 is lost by helpless widows and orphans ; end the fact is remarkable, that notwithstanding the great decline in the value of the stock, the corruption, ruin, talked abroad during the last twe years, in all that time no return of the situation «f the Pennsylvania banks has been made public. The last ieturn published wat in October, 1839, and the situation of a majority of the banks is a perfect mystery. How long is this state of things to be submitted to? Are the people never going to restore to make the banks pay their Aebts? The probability now is, that immediate resump- tion will be compelledin Maryland ; what excuse will then remain for the insolvent banks of Philadelphia to be allowed to oppose the sound institutions in their ef forts to resume?
