Some he professors invited the hew comers up to the theatre, as it was a large room. ‘The two Drs. left the Lecture Noon and repaired to that of the amphitheatre, wh. people, who were crowded in the former heard that the lectures would be delivered up a general rush was made to that quarter; cro and elbowing became the order of the night: la had their bonnets mashed or broken, their s tora off their backs, and themselves squeezed tighter than ever before. The gentlemen found itlittle bet ter, for they had their hats knocked off and toes trampled on, and frequent was the cry “ get off my corns,” in that mally crowd. To proceed up or down was utterly impossible. The stairs threaten- ing every moment te give way, filled those who oc- cupied them with fear. An old, but very respecta- ble gentleman, about midway up the stairs, expos- tulated and begged those below him to return, 80 a3 to afford a passage for those whose lives were in jeopardy so long as they remained in their present situation. Several others who saw the perilous con- dition of the crowd, aided the old gentleman in his efforts, and} they finally cleared the crowd, that all might come down from above. No other alterna- tive was lett them, but to return home, in disap- pointment, and many of the fair vowed they never would go to the Institute again. But to return to the lecturers, who are the heroes of this epistle. Dr. B. first obtained the floor, and was to speak only for an hour, as had been previous- a agreed. After speaking for half an hour longer than his time, he expressed hie regret to the audi- ence, that his remarks must be so soon brought toa clese, as he had a great deal more tosay, but that/his time had already expired. Dr. S. stepped forward and told him to proceed; Dr. B. then remarked “Dr. S_ has kindly proffered me the liberty of proceeding with my remarks, and tells me to have no regard to the time agreed upon. This, I must say, is the only kindness he has shown me during this controversy.” Dr. S. smiled and said nothing. Dr. B. however, had very little more to gay; he had exhausted his Teservoir. To save appearances, he began to detail gome experiments he had made. He stated that there was a young man who had been given up b his Peon as past recovery ; but that by his aid, he had restored him, as it were, from the grave, {br. B. and Dr. R. two of the physicians who at- tended this young man, have since denied the state- ment made by Dr. Buchanan. } and that in four days after he had visited him, he was able to go abeut. ‘This he unwittingly contradicted, for he afterwards stated that the young man was unable, a week af. terwards, to hold an umbrella over him, in order to o and see Dra, T.B. and R. In speaking of ‘this, e said—** The young man, I believe, is present in this audience : he can testify to what I have said.” ‘The young man being there, cried out: “* Yes, here Tam.” Some mischievous fellow in the crowd at this critical juncture, bawled out, &‘ Does your mamina know you're eut ?” This query, so appro- steor to the occasion, called forth a general laugh, Dr. B. not excepted. The Dr. shortly afterwards closed his remarks Dr. 8. came forward to answer Dr. B. He (Dr B.) had witnessed one defeat, and would not stay for fear of another. He accordingly took his hat and cloak and left; Dr. S. politely requested him to remain; but no—Dr. B. retired amidst the general hiss of the audience. Very little tine remained for Dr. 5. to speak ; he said he would lecture again and again, till he pulled down the slight foundation on which Dr. B.’s sci- ence was erected, and would not let one stone re- main top of another. . ee e# The audience were dismissed, after an invitation being tendered to them to attend his next lecture. ICorrespondence of the Herald.] Acwany, Friday, Jan. 21, 1812. Tha mild weather that hae prevailed here for the last three days, still continues, only to day it has been accompanied by a storm of mingled rain and sleet, rendering our streets, never, in the best of weather, noted for their cleanliness, almost impassa- ble. A much longer continuance of this weather, and we shall have a boat at our wharves again from your city. There is epirited competition going on here ina small way between Boston and New York. For some years the citizens of Albany have derived their sources of cheap reading from your city. Since the opening of the Western Railroad, the Bosto- nians have flooded the city with the publications of their own press,! and “Daily Mails,’’ * Timee,” “Notions,” &c., may now be found about our streets thick as hops, and an agency office for the sale of them has been established. The Bostonians j seem determined to rival New York in every re- spect, and the New Yorkers must have a care, or they will not be unsuccessful. In the Senate to-day, Mr. Furman enquired why the Judiciary Committee had not reported on his resolutions in 1elation to the repeal of the Baokrupt Law. He said that they had had the subject lorg enongh before them to have come to rome vonclu- sion on the subjeet ere thir, amd he bad delayed calling for the consideration of them forthe purpose ol bearing the report of that committee. Mean while the House of Representatives had parsed the bill repealing the law, aad if the resolutions were not acted on immediately, they would be of no avail. Mr. Posten eaid in reply, that the chairman of the Judiciary Committee wae not in hie seat, but he preeumed ihe committee wae weady, Alter some iurther debate, vit Were jnsiructed te reporton the subject. he bill authorising the third Associate Reformed Chureh of the eity of New York to advpta more eligible site for their edifice, was ordered to a third reading = Afier a considera ble amount of business, not of very general interest, had been got through, the Senate took up for consi- deration the resolutions on the subjeet of the public faith, which have been under ¢ pr the last ar or five days. From the tact that parties in this House are more equally balanced, and that the mi- nority are much more talented, the discussions in this branch are much more obsuunate and protracted tha the lower House. A AMBLIN’S joint resolution, propesing to re- duce the number of copies of documents oraered, was received from the Aasembly. lu the Assembly, the business has been almost wholly of a private character. Mr. Townsern’s bill providing that the State Printer should publish a weekly newspaper which should contain all the legal advertising, was report- edwith amendments, by Mr. Tamutim, from the Standing Committee on Public Pratng Gen. Dix presented a petition frem Jonathan Laurence and others, of New York city, praying for arecharter of the North River Bank. In present ing,the General remarked that the petition had been sent to him by some geatlemen in New York, with whom he was acquainted—that i: was signed by a large number of very respectable citizens. He was not aware however Why it was sent to him rather than to some member of the New York delegation He observed that the application was for an uncon- stitutiomal renewal of the charter of this bank. While, therefore, he performed the duty the peti- tioners had assigned to him with pleasure, he must say that he should have discharged it more cheerful- ly had they asked for a continuance of their fran- chise, with modifications adapted to the existing state of things. An Act to repeal the Registry Law was taken, aud some debate ensued on a motion to refer; when Mr. Cuamen, from Saratoga, afversome remarks on the subject, said he was in favor of amending the Constitution go as to give the right of suffrage to the poor unfortunate African. This is the first A» oliuon Movement or demonstration that has been made in the Louse this season; how it will be followed will soonbe developed. Mr. McMuraray made a most eloquent speech on the subject of the repeal, and the matter rested until the subject was taken up in Con mittee of the Whole, when, afier a short consid- eration, the Cowimittee rose and reported progress on the bill. Mr. Townsenn’s bill in relation to interest on money was taken up, and the Committtee rose with out taking the {question, The House concurred in p joint ition from tne Senate, relative to the ion of the Coagressicnal Districts, with n endment incre, s (he Committee on the part louse to one from each Senate District. rous petitions for aid to the New York and nh oad; to Thompsonian practitioners; for the Suppression ot licentiousness, etc., continue daily be received. , The Military Convention is in session again to- day, in the spacious rooms of the Young Men’s As- sociation. ‘Their proceedings are highly interesting, ind several very patriotic speeches have been made, y some of the more patriotic of the representatives our ‘citizen soldiery” there assembled. The in their honor, passed off very well lust There were a large number present, most lutary gentlemen. The spacious hall ut with the assembled beauty of Albany, it will be strange, if some of the delegates do net reach home with their hearts behind them. A number of our legislative solons were also present, and they appeared to enjoy themselves mightily. Besides the ball, there was a soiree or purty given the same evening by Van Rensselaer, to which a great many of them were invited, and attended. The State Printer gives adinner party and ball this evening. It takes Thurlow to do up these mat- tera in the rightstyle. Athis entertainment to-day will be present all the big whigs of the city, heads of departments, small potatoes, etc. Ile has two daughters, charming and amiable young ladies, who would grace any halls, and who will no doubt be the centre of attraction this evening. I shall endeavor to get the particulars of thie effair, and twansimit them to you in my next. : 1 observe present ‘at the jdeliberations of the House, Col Storms, Stevenson, and others, candi- dates, who of course are there trom purely disin- terested motives. Derrick Sibley is also here, and being seen so often as he is with his finger in some members’ button holes in bye places, it looks very like as it he were on hand as a member of that dis- tinguished body, the Third House, so flatteringly alluded to not long since, by Mr, Hoffman. Anew movement has been made here. by the abolitionists, which is no less than the establichment of asecond weekly paper, devoied to their cause, and to be under the direction of three “* colored citi- zens,” asthey style themselves. Frexp Benxett,— As our New York brethren appear to set great value on our western railroad, I will suggest to you amode by which your mighty city may be saved fiom ruin, and the tables turned apon us. This is to send on here and buy up the stock of the road, a majority of whieh can be readily pur- chased at75 per cent, or 35 for 60 paid in, and then you can do with it as you please, or we should be glad to receive in exchange the stock of the Boston and Providence railroad, and pay you 10 per cent per share in exchange between Western and Provi- dence; and as we now have a majority of 1,000 shares in the Providence road here. I will let you into the secret. Oar plan is to get the stock here as fast as possible, and I believe almost every eale of the stock in New York is parchased on Bos- ton account. This road can easily divide 8 per eent, but our pelle is to keep it at 6 per cent till we got most of the stock here, knowing your strong dislike to any stock that pays lesa than 7.
