F you think the following literal tranflation of & Latin Epitsph ( (uppoled to have been written by she ingenious Dr. King, of Oxford, and inferted in our Magazine, for May 1761) is worthy of a place, In yourjudicious and ufeful coliettion of monthly in- geliigence, you will oblige your conftant reader, and humble fervant, PHILALETHES, An Epitaph on Ricaarp Nasu, Efg; RicHarp NasH, born in an obfcure place *, and (prung from no anceftors 1, (yet what is wonderful and incredible) “fthe people, the nobility, and princes, with their free and voluntary {uffrages, conferr’d on him a moft rich and flourithing kingdom 1, which he govern’d with the utmoft dignity, more thdn fifty years, M’ ith the conlent, approbation, and spplaufe of all. - Befides, a tamous province § was annex’d to his dominion, by the unanimous voice and confent " of all ranks of pecple, . which he managed with admirable prudenc and condut, by bim/elf alone, and never by delegates or deputies. He uled to vifit his province every year, ; and to'refide amongf his provincials, Yo long as the necefflity of affairs obliged him. In fuch exilted fortune, he neither appesred aking Iwollen with pride, by his gai: ; ‘or, like tyrants, demand f{ervile homage from his Subjefls, or arrogated to himfelf ample honours, or {ounding titles: For he laid afide all the badges of authority, ‘even the royal diddem itfelf, and was content with the fimple ornament . of a white bat 3 An evident fign of the probity of his mind : A moft prudent lawgiver, more illuftrious X than Solon or Lycurgus: He made, eftablifh’d; and publifh’d; what laws he pleas’d: ~ Bat all his orders and rules ., were grateful, plesfant, and beneficial, both o his fellow chiizens, guefts, ftrangeérs, : and foreigners. He was the umpire, and dire€or of their : amufement ; but grave, elegant and polite ; tho’ he temper'd his higheft gaiety with becoming gravity and fedstenefs. In the firft place, he took particular care., that no one fhould be indecent or immodeft; in the affemblies of gentlemen or ladies : And that no impurity, clsmour, or tumult fhould appear there. « He not only enlarged his owh moft famous city ¥, his joy and delight, with moft beautiful buildings, but adorn’d it with remarkable difcipline and orders : Siace no one better underftood, cultivated, or tsught decency, than he did. He was juft, liberal, kind, and facetious ; e friend to sll, efpccially the miferable and diftreffed. He had no enemies, except fome overgrown medlers; and morole, fanatic, declaimers, who are the fevereft pefts of mankind, He was a lover of peate, and of his country 5 and ke eftablith’d happy and lafting concord in his kingdcm|, to fuch & degree, that no one dared to affront another by faucy language, or injure him by sny . bad aftion : Nor ever to wear s {word in publick, as {ufpicicus of beingin danger. Altho’ he was moft poweriul, and governed all things in his kingdom by his nod ; yet liberty herfelf, hardly ever flourifh’d more, in favour, glory, and authority. For he dilcover’d the happy temperament (s thing of extenfive ftudy, and, perhaps, of all the moft difficul) whereby the mean with the noble, the ® Swanfty, in Wales. + i, e, of note, 1 Bath. § Tunbridge. * Bath, ~ i poor and the rich, the unlearned with the moft learned, the . coward and the moft brave, might think themfelves upon the fxme level. _ He being the {ame impartial king to all. Whatever he did amifs (for we all have failings) he injured himfelf more than others : And this by miftake and imprudence, rather thaw villsiny or improbity ; bist never thro® ignorsnce of decency or honefty, nor cver to that degree, that he might not eafily gain pardon from all hinmane perions. If other kings and governors, or their viceroys, would imitate the copy of 4is life and ‘manners, ( which I wifh, agsin and agsin, they would ) then both they themfelves would be blefs'd, and ali the countries of the world would be moft happy. Let the mules and graces mourn the death of fuch, #nd o great a man: .
