PO R T 8§ M 00T H1. Wednefday latt arrived here the Capts. Sheafe and Bartlet from Barbados ; by whom we have the agreesble News of the Arrivals of the following Veflels at Barba- ~ dos, viz Capts. Sherburne, Wormell, Briard, Grant, Abbor, Marble, and Simpfon : Capt. Pickering was tsken, but retzken and carried into Barbados. The above Veflels all came cut under Convoy, snd are hourly cx- petted here. : Having in our Paper, No. 233, given a melancholy Account of the Misfortune of Captisn Joun FrosT and Son, who were Shipwrecked in the Schooner known by the Name of the O!d Monk, (and taken off the Wreck by a French Privateer ) on his Paffage from Philadelphia to this Port, almoft a Year ago, and of their being car- ried to Erance and imprifon’d, after being caft away again near Bayonne, and narrowly efcaping being drown- ed ; at which Time about 12 or 14 of the Privateer’s .Crew perifhed in trying to get afhore ; we now proced to give foma further Account to his Arrival in this » Town laft Friday—viz. AFTER they got to Bayonne, 309 Prifoners with them were taken out of Prifon and carried in the Di- mon Carteel Snow to @:d England, z4 of them being landed on the Lizid: from thence they walked 200 Miles to Briftol, ard was fupported by Begging, bit chiefly by Turnips from the Ficlds,as fo many People under mi‘erable Circumfitances frequently pafling that Way the Charity of the[nhabitants had grown very cold, and their Hearts, 13 it were hardaed by the almoft con ftant Sight of wre:ched Objefls : When they cameto Briftol, there was only three of them together ( being obliged at different Times o leflen their Number by Separating, as fo many could not be lopporied at all by Begging or otherwife ) they had neither Shoes nor Stokings, nor a Farthing of Money ; However, in the m:dtt ot their Diftre/s Meflrs Devensuire REEVES and Lovp, Merchints, gencroufly gave aud procured them 'I'enGuineas, feeing them in fuch a milercbleCondition; which raifed the little Spirits they had, and furnifhed them with Cloathing and Diet, and for which they were very thankful to their generons Benefasttors.... After four Weeks tarrying at Briftol, they took Paflage in one _Captain M’'MurrLan for Bofton; and after being on their Paflage 25 Days, in Lat. 41. 20. Having tarried but two Duys afhore in 3psin, they had a Paffage to Oporto 3> Lesgues diftan. Not being able to procure a Paf isge to any Part ot North America, they found them- felves obliged to travel by Land to L:fbon, which is about 200 Miles : they were 13 Days in walking ‘throughthe Ccuntry, the Paths being rocky and Moun- tainous. . . They futfered greatly in this Journey, asthe 1 Portuguefe were very unkind, and calling themHereticks would not allow them to lodge in any of their Houfes, . fo that their lodging Places were under Hedges and ‘T'rees, notwithitanding their Pafles from the Conful to ~,Oporto, who allowed them only two Crowns each ; thus they [aw fomething of the Effe&ts of the Popith Religion, efpecially samong the more ignorant Sort, who Jooked upon them as not fit to live becsufle they were not ot their Perfwafion, and would not fall down upon their Knees, 1o Kifs their Crucifixes, and worfhip in the Manner they did ; and its more than probable they would have deltroyed tiem had it not been for their -2 Pafles Sign’d by the Confui... After they had reached Lifbon, they applied to Sir Henry FRaNKLIN, the Englith Conful, who, to their unfpeakable Joy, gave , them Cloathe, end put them to Board till a Psflage offered, whichin four Days they took in Captain Fuk- s1onc of Newbury, who was very kind to them ; as al{o Captain Hussy of Lifbn, who was Part Owner, and on Board with them ; fo alter being 13 Months in attempting to make a fhort Voyage oniy to Philadelphia, ;.and loling Veflel and Cargo, he with his Son is fafely got to Portimouth, the 31 Inftant September 1761, 5 Thefe Particulars of this poor Man's Misfortunes mafl recommend him to the Benevilence of all who bave any Feeling of Pity for the Neceffitous 5 and it is not v~ donbted but be will meet with Friendswho will commiferate bis Sufferings, and encourage both bim and bis Som, in = getting their Support in fome boneff Employment, as they . bave loff all they had, to the Value of Three or Four < Thoufand Pounds ©/d Tenor, the Veffel being their own, and Part of the Cargo, and no Infurance made, and the Captain has a Wife and five Children to fupport.
