tha* Whew 1L ADEL PH1A, duguf 20} On Monday laft. a Committe of the Miniflers ‘of this City waited on bis Honour the Gover- nor and prefented the following Addrefs and Remonftrance, in Bebalf of themfelves and the Subferibers. : gireon To the Honourable] AMES HAMILTON, Efq; Lieutenant Governor and Com- mander in Chief of the Province of Pen- fylvania, and the Countries of New-Caltle, Kent and Suffex on Delaware. ' ‘The Humble ADDRESS and REMONST- RANCE of the Protefiant Minifters of ihe Jeveral Denominatioys in the City of Phila- delphia together with theChurch-Wardens, Vefiry Men, Elders)and Reprefentatives of their refpeftive Congregations. May it pleafe yoir HONOUR, ) S you are the fupreme Magiftrate of A this Provincé, ém}ufied not only with the execution of the Laws now in “being, but impowered alfo ( where they are deficient ) to propofe as well as te affent to new Ones; permit usin the prelent deep Affition of our Hearts, to unburthen them to your Honour, ( as we truft ) in the Spirit -of Gofpel Meeknefs, and with a fervent Defire for the Maintainance of true Religion and Chriftian Morality in this Place of our Re- fidence. | Iz hath been with the greateft Cencern for fome Years paft, that we have obferved a- mong our Fellow Citizensan immoderate and growing Fondnefs for Pleafure, Luxury,Gam- ing, Diffipation, and their concomitant Vices. The Impropricty as well as Ingratitude of fuch a Condué is too remarkable to be paf- fed over. ’Tis but a few Years fince our Frontiers were fwimming in Blood, and this Province groaning almoft under every Cala- mity that could befal a People. Wethen thought it our Duty to humble ourfelves be- fore the Lord in Sackcloth and Afhes. Days of Fafting and Mourning were appointed, and from our folemn and crouded Atten- dence upon thefe Days, it was trufted that fuitable Impreffions of Religion, Serioufnefs, and Decorum, had been generally made among us. But alas! thele Impreffions ( if ever they were real ) feemin too many In- ftances to have vanilhed with the Danger that created them. Laft Winter we heard of high Scenes of public Gaming added to,and mixed with ufual Diverfions of the Seafons. And yet, not content with thefe, our Projettors of Pleafure, our Leaders in Modes and Fafhions, as if cthey were afraid to leave themfelves or their Followers one Moment for Bufinefs, or fober Converfation, or ferious Refletion up- on what they were fent for into thisWorld, have fet on Foota SCHEME for filling up the Summer Seafon alfo with the like Scenes of Diflipation, Idlenefs and Excefs. The Scheme we mean ( as far as it is yet avowed by them ) is a largeSubfeription Lottery, for erecting publicGardens with Baths & Bagnios among us. How deftructive fuch Places of public Rendezvous are to the Morals of a People, what they ufually terminate in, and how 1ill fuited they are to the Circumftances of this young City, and the former Chara&ter of its Inhabitants, we need not mention to your Honour, ) The People of Philadelphia have been re- maikable for their Sobriety, their Frugality, their Induftry, and ferious Turn of Mind. The divine Religion of our bleffed Lord and Saviour feemed to have had fome Hold of their Confciences. People at a Diftance, who had Children to breed to Merchandize, Law, Phylic, or the Mechanic Profeffions, gave a due Preference to this Place above others ; and by fuch Means as thefe we are become a great and flourifhing People, Butalas ! Things are now like to be fatally reverfed 3 and of all the Schemes that could pofiibly have been devifed to corrupt the M rals of our Citizens and hurt us as a trad- ing People, to make good and fober Perfons -of other ‘Plices fhun us, and to induce the Profane and Diffolute to come and fectle a- mong us, the prefent Scheme feems the moft effectual. Were there ‘nothing more in View than what is pretended, it might be effeéted with near asfew hundredPounds as there are thou(- -ands propofed. =~ Were a hot and cold Bath ‘neceffary for the Health of the Inhabitants of this City, they might at a fmall Expence ‘be added to the Hofpital, put under the fober Government of that Place, and kept feparate from thofe ufed by the Patients 5 and as to a public Place of walking, the State-Houfe- ‘Green, or Garden;® a Law of the Province, is already fet apart for that ufe—But much more than this lurks under this Scheme, and will certainly attend its Accomplithment. We wellknow that gaming Tables; a Houfe ‘of Entertainment, Places of Drinking, and the like, make a part of publick Gardens ; and from many Circumftances attending the Pro- ‘Je€tion and Carrying on of this Scheme(which we forbear to mention ) we have no reafon to think that lefs is intended by it. We do therefore in the moft folemn and earneft Manner remonfirate and bear our public Teftimony againft it to your Honour ; moft humbly requefting and befeeching you, by your own known Regard to whatever is decent in publick Life, by your Regard to the Morals of the prefent and future Gen- erations, and to the Succefs of the Gofpel of JESUS CHRIST, on which their chief Happinefs ‘muft depend, to difcountenance and difcourage the faid Scheme, by every Meansin your Power. In that Cafe we doubt not theOppofition that will be fhewn to it by grave and good Men of every Degree, un- der your Honour’s Pretetion and Counte- nance, will effectually cruth it. But thould we be dceived in this, there are ftill other Meansin your FHonour’s Powsr as a Branch of the Legiflature,on which we partly ground the Propriety of this Addrefs, as the only Thing fhe could doduring the Recefs of the other Branch, Weare May it pleafe your Houour, with the utmost Regard and Efteem Your Honour’s moft obedient bumble Servants, CHURCH of ENGLAND. To which bis Honour was pleafed to make the following ANSWER : ___ Gentlemen, & - HE Zeal you exprefs for Religion, and your Concern for the Morals of the Peo- ple are wery becoming your Funllions and Charatiers, and therefore cannot but be ac- ceptable to me. ) I agree with you in Opinion, that multiply- ing the Scenes of public Diverfion, in fo young a City as ours, may be attended with many of the Mifchiefs and Inconveniences [et forth in your Remontftrance : for which Reafon, as well as becaufe the Means, propofed for carry- t ing the projeied Scheme ints Execuliun, are conirary to Law, yau may be affured it will re- cerve all the Difcountenance I ams able to give » 112 PHILADELPHIA, Avguft 27.
