Sloop Seaflower, Moyzis Hubbs for Halifax, By Captain Bradford, who arrived here laft Tuefday in 6 Days from Louifbourg, we have the following very agreeable Intelligence, viz. That on the 1gth ult. Capt. Dorrington, from Bofton, off Canfo fell in with the Repulfe, a 30 Gun Frigate, the Mafter of which was on board Capt. Dorrington, and inform’d him, that 3 or 4 Days before, he had an Engage- ment with a French Erigate of 36 Guns, in the Bay of Chaleurs, which lafted 5 Hours, when he fortunately funk her ; that he then attack’d a Fleet of Store-Ships, to the Num- ber of 25 or 30, which lay in the Bay, and ceftroyed every one of them. The Enemy had a Battery on Shore, which fired brifkly on the Repulfe, and tore ber almoft to Pieces. Capt. Harris arrived at Louifbourg the next Day, (being the 20th) and confirm’d the a- bove Account, and inform’d, that in the Gut he had like to have been boarded by 2 French Pertiauger, which he fired at and beat off fun- dry Times. To the Publifber of the New HampsHIRE GAzETTS. S I am one of your conftant Readers, could not help taking Notice of the Performance in your laft Paper, concerning Mr. Benjamin Parker, who fcems to b2 attac’d in a- moft violent Manner by the Shop- keepers of Partfmouth, asthough he had bzcn guilty of fome atrecious and unpardonable Crime ; upon reading of which, the following Story cameto myRemembrance, of ¢ Charon’s being condalted by Mercury to a Place ¢ where he might fee all the World at once : After he ¢ had fufficiently view’d it, Mercury would needs know ¢ whit he had oblerved ; he told him, he faw a pro- ¢ mifcuous Multitude, whofe Habitations were like Mole ¢ Hills, they like Emmets, and Cities like fo many Hives ¢ of Bees ; and every Bee had a Sting, and did nothing ¢ but fting one another, &c. fome trotting about to bear ¢ falle Witnefs, and faying any Thing that might ferve ¢ their Turns.” — - How farany Part of this Scory may be applicable to the prefent Cale, muft be left to the Reader.—-—After fome Introduétion, they proceed thus, ¢ WE (whoare Shopkeepers inPort/mauth) being charged ¢ with fallely reporting, that Mr. Benjamin Parker has ¢ for fomeTime paft been non compos ; and that his being ¢ indebted to fTome Gentlemen in DB:iffon more than he ¢ was able to pay, was the Occ.fion of his Diftrsclion, ¢ &c.— Under this general Accufation think we are ¢ cbliged to fay fomething in Vindication of our felves.” —Asthere is a great Number of Shopkeepers, it is na- tural to conclude, #// muft be meant, even from the Sellers of Nezdles to thele of Fews Harps : Bat my Surprizz was increafed when I came to the Ead of this excellent Peiformance, where I expeéled to find a Num. ber of Perfons Names drawn up in Battle srray ; but fc und none, to encounter this Go/iab of aParker ; which ought to have been inferted, to ftand in Connc&ion with the Word #e ; fo that I muft manage my Tefk as tho’ I was engaged with Encmies behind the Curtain : — Shiould my Attack be ever fo bold aud vigorous, I fupet there is not above three or four out of this vaft Number that would own the Brat which is palm’d upon the World—They take it for granted, that the Accufatien is againft 2// the Shopkeepers, tho’ only the Word fundry was mentioned by the Gentlemen of Bsffou; and yet doubt whether thole Gentlemen lubleribed their Names, thinking they would not be fo arilitrary — Thus they Ring Parker, in Peortfmszth, as a diftraéted Man: not content with this, fome of tho'e Bees trot away to Boffon, and inform- Parker’s Creditors, ¢ that ¢ he was fued for large Sums of Mouney, which he could ¢ not pay.” His Creditors not faddenly influenc’d with this Report, waits ™ill Parksr mskss his Appearance in Bofton, where he found {ome Bess had been, endea- vouring to fting his Charaéter, who unhappily loft their S ings in the Attempt. Soon After a Number of wor- thy Gentlemen in Byffon declared in the public Prints, ¢ That they had dealt largely with fad Parker, both be- < fore and fince the fpreading them Reports and always ¢« found him a Perlon of Punéuality and Honor) Altho’ thefe Gentlemen are of undoubted Veracity, and not eafily impofed on by falle Glofizs, yet the Enemics of Parker are ftill dubious, and think the Writing may beapocryphal. They then proceed to give the Eviden- ces of his DiltreQion thus ; ¢ Thefaid Parker, inftesd of minding his Shop, [ud- ¢ denly appeared on Horfeback, with a laced Hat and ¢ Rufles’, (unpounTeED EvipEnces of a Madman ) ¢ ana rode thro' the Sireets of Portfmouth, &c. was not ¢ this & ftrong Sufpicion of his being diitrated ¥’ But what puts it beyond Difpute with the'e fagacious and | penetrating Gentlemen, is, he proclaim’d that ¢ Quebec ¢ was abfolutely taken 3 8nd for this Reafon they infinn- ated, that he required Confinement, with the frequent Attendance of a Phyfician, with Bliffering, Bleeding, &c. with many more Evideaces of the like Weight te prove A st : WS o their Point. To fee the Man in this dreadul Situation they fay, <for our Parts it excited Pity from us ; we ¢ imagin'd this Frenzy might run in nis Biood, as he was ¢ not the firft of his Family who had been even Ve y ¢ lately in like Circumflances, withing he would behave ¢ with Reipe&@, &c.” And then with great Propriewy ¢ Zwery, Whether it migat not be inferted, tha: a: M ad ¢ meis.1s periodical, bis Fit might have gons off betore $ t!‘lc Gentlemen of Boflon law him.” Here isa motly Mixzure of Pity, Uncnaritablenefs, and ill natur’d Re- flcfixons on his Family, good wilhes for his better Be- h:y!pur: All genuine Evidences of a true Chrifiian Sp!f::. Haviog thus done all in their Power, tak= their Leave of Mr. Parksr, and no doubt triumph, to think what will be the Con'equence of this :Lbor’a‘c Piece, which is hung out for the Public to judge of ; theretore my fi:ft Cauiionis, for Perfons to take greac Care how they ridethrough the Streets of Portimouth with 7aced Hats and Ruflos, inftead of their ufual G:rb: md‘no: to mentiona Word sbout Quebec’s beirng taken, wlxxg}:.thc very Children of Portfmouth knew there was - a pudlic Rejoycing for long ago. Not to ridein Pro- ceflion, efpecially with the New Hampthire Regimene: More than ordinary circumlpe in propofing Schemes, e'pecially sbout Melaffes. I am already in Pain for fome Perfons, who have at fundry Times, in different Garbs, vpon extraordinary Occafions, rode thro’ the Streets of Portfmouth, with Zaced Hats and Ruffles, but hope they will rot be fo prefumptuous any more, but think fericufly on their Waye, leit they meet with the fame Fate that poor Parfer has, who was fo unlucky a5 to be in Bofton when the public Rejoycing was hers, and therefore ought not to have mentioned one Word about taking QUEREC, as that Point was fettled long before his Return, by Perfons who sll had the Ule of their Realon. There is not any intended RefleCions on the worthy Shopkeepers of this Place, notwithitanding all this Blufter.
