NEWPORT, Rkode Ifland, Fuly 15. On Siturday arrived here by land, Mr. Joieph Pike of this town, who was at Ofwego in.the year 1756, when that place unfortunately fell in‘o the hands of the enemy. He, with thirteen more englith prifoners, were, by order of the French Genersl, St. Luke. delivered to 25 Savages (natural Allies of the French) twelve made their efcape, Pike and another were conduted iato the woods by the Indians, who employ’d them in hunting for fix months, in the - fall and winter. After which, thole two unhappy perfons were condudlted t0 a town 2 s calledConaflatego, inhabized by part of an Indisn nation. The next feafon their exercife was bunting. Thethird they were commanded to pertorm the {ame duty, but were ebligad to return in four months, beaver pruving fo fcarce, as not to aff »rd the [ndians fuffizient game ; during their return, their only fullenance was bark of trees and wots. In the fummer ot the fourth year, their bufinefs was to clear land, and rai'e corn. In the fall, Pike and his fellow fufferer were fold for 3 yearsto two French merchants, for 150 piftereens each ; one of which died in two months ; when they were con- dufted toa prifon at Montreal, where they continued in & miferable condition, upon a naufeous 2nd {lsnder allowance, till a flag of truce was prepared to reccive them and 128 other Englith prifoners, who were fafely landed at Crown Point. Capt. Bucklin, of the flocp Providence, had the misfortune to be taken by a French privateer about 15 leagues to windward of Antigua, who carried him to Martinico,after ftripping him ard his people of every thing. Immediately after they were landed, he was confin’d in goal, with =1 more Englilh mafters, in & room but g feet and n haif one way, and 10 and a half the other, without any cther {uftensnce than a flender allowance of Rinking cod fith ence a day, and rothing to repole shemfelves on, but bare pavements. Arbuthnot, whocom- minded at Fort Frederick in St. John’s River, the Year paft, alfo feveral other Officersand a Number of Soldi- ers belonging to this Province, who have garrifoned his Majefty’s Forts up the Bay Fundy, and now diicharged arrived here, being relieved by a Number lately enlift- ed in this Province, for that Service. We hear that the Indians behaved well, and ftill continue to come in to the Forts at Nova Scotia, and cairy on trade very pesceably. : : Friday lsft arrived here the Province Ship of War King Geofge, Capt. Capt. Bragden informs, That Captain Fifher in 8 Sloop from Annapolis Roysl, bound to Fort Cumber- land at Chegne&o, was csft away in the Bay of Fundy; on board of whom was Lieut. Tonge, an Engineer, with a corfiderable Sum of Money ; which Money, together with the Lives of two or three of the Hands were {oft. Yefterdsy Mcorning Capt. We hear by Captain Jacoblon, That on receiving the melancholly Account of the Devaftation in this Town by Fire in March laft, Sublcripiions were fet on Foot in the Cities of London, Briftol, and moft other Places in England ; as alfo in Ireland and Holland, for the Suf- ferers by that Fire.
