At 6 in the morn- jug parted the fpare anchor, fo that we had nothing left to ride it out, but the fheet anchor, and not above half a czble cnit, with one ftrand cut by the rocks ; could not veer any more cable, the ga'e ftill continuing at N. E. right on fhore, fo that the officers and company came begging we might throw overboard the guns and cut the cable, as it was high water and the only time, ‘without any other profpect, to fave their lives : Iagreed with them, fgr the prefervation of fo many lives ; and by the providence of Almighty God, after heaving overboard our guns, and cutting the cable, beat over 2 great number of rocks, with the lofs of all our capital anchors, the mizen maft and rudder, and almoft every thing on deck hove overboard, which the people tho’t imight contribute to fave their lives, if they had bug beat off two ftages that had been built in the morning for as many to get on as could ; the reft were to take their chances with myfelf and cfficers ; but thank God we have not loft one man, and if veflels could be fent us from Providence,we may fave a great many of the fhip’s ftores and furniture ; fhip and all wicth good pilots. By Captain Adams, who arrived here laft night from Providence, we learn, chat his Excellency General Shirley, with the Hon. Mr. Bradford, arrived there fafe on the 31t ult. in five days from the Key where they were caft away, in one of the veflels which Mr. Gambier, prefident of the Bahamas, had difpatched for them. Soon after the General’s arrival at Providence two other of the veflels fent by Mr. Gambier with fkil- ful pilots to affilt his Majefty’s thip in diftrefs, brought in moft of the Mermaid’s powder, fhot, and fome of her (ails, &c, and gave hopes, that not only the fhip’s company and furniture would be faved, but that they fhould likewife be able to get the fhip out of her dan- gerous fituation and bring her into port.
