CHARLESTOWN, South. Carolina, Nov. zo. In a letter from Fort Loudon, dated the 3d inftant, we have the following account of the Little Carpenter’s Jate expedition, viz. That he arrived at that fort the z4th ult. with two French prifoners, and 4 fcalps. That after the ufual ceremonies on fuch occafions, and yeceiving prefents for his good behaviour, he informed Capt. Paul Demere, the commanding officer theie; «« That on the road he gotintelligence, that there were many Shawanefe at Fort L’Afomption, who were con- tinually on the watch ; and if he intended to do any execution, he {fhould go between new Fort Chartres, on the Mififippi river, and L’ Afomption, where he would meet with parties continually going from one fort to she other ; that he accordingly took that route, waited along time in vain, and dreaded that he fhould be obliged to return without either prifoners or fcaips ; but at length & fcouting party, which he had fent out in the morning, prefently retorned, and informed him, that they had dilcovered frefh tracls of upwards of 30 people, leading towards L’Afomption ; that he there- upon fet off, fully determined to do execution ; that on the 18th of September, two {couts, who had been fent. out the day before, came in, and informed him, they had difcovered Frenchmen and Indians dreffing Viétuals at the water fide ; whereupon he advanced wodifcovered, fired upon them, ‘killed three Frenchmen, and one Indian, and took two Frenchmen prifoners ; that the Enemy fired at his perty, and wounded one of them, who died foon after, but this did not prevent the reft from making 2 good meal of four buffaloes the enemy had kilied, part of which they were drefling when furprized; that the party he furprized confifted of only 15 men, the relt (17 in Number) being that morning gone to hunt for more buftaloes, and that he had not begn there long before he difcovered a large boat under fail, full of people, upon which his party hid themielves between the rocks, and when it ap- proached to a proper diftance, fired upon it and killed a good mhny of the people.” One of the priloners con- firmed the Little Carpenter’s relation ; knew the boat ; faid there was an cngineer on board ; and that fhe was 'Joaded with ammunition, provifion, and liguor. for Fort L’ Afomption, and that when the Indians fired up- {on her, hefaw fome of the people drop into the water, " yand others fail in the boat. The laft accounts we have from the Creek Country are, that the ChaCtaw traders were returned, after ha- ving fold their goods to great advantage, and fettled a very beneficial ftandard for their fature trade ; and that * ( having two of the enemy’s forts to pafs in their way, the French had formed a defign to cut them off, but the Cha&aws having notice of it, efcorted them in fafety, with 700 men, quite to the Creek towns. That the + % Cowetas and Cuflitahs were mightily pleafed with what had lately been tranfected at the Savannah, regarding them; had refolved not to engage in any hcitile meafures with the Cherckees, but to refent any outrages they e ST ATy 'M, 5 gt € bl fhould commit, that might have a tendency to hurt their trade, repucation or huating ; and that they had given notice of fuch their refolutions to the Cherokee nation. And that the hon. Mr. Atkin had recovered of his wounds, and remained in one of the moft remote Creek towns. i Wednefday Evening, an exprefs which had been fent from this goverament to Virginia, returned from thence in 10 days. Private advices by him, do no: fo much as hint that any thing is likely to be done by that govern- mént towards our expedition to the Cherokees : But letters from Cape Fear cggfidenty fay, that North- Caroline furnifhes an aid in men, and that they are actu- ally on their march to join our fosces at,or near Keowee. Dec. 1. On Wednefday arrived here the brig Achilles, John Walker maftsr, bound from Monto- Chrifto to New York, where {he is ‘owned, laden with {ngars, &c. having been feized the z2d ult. by his Ma- jefty’s frigate the Trent, John Lindfay, Eq; command- e5, who the fame day feized the floop Squirrel, Capt. Law, al(o of and for New York, from Monto Chirifto, who is alfe crdered here, but notyet arrived. Yefterday evening arrived hereanotherMonto-Chrifto man, the Brig Vork, William Mercer, mafler, of and for New-York, fent in by Capt. Lindfay, who we hear has fallen i with two more and ordered them hither, viz. the Quondam, Vrouw Alletta, now the SnowCaro- lina, Benjamin Stoddard, Malter, for New York; and the Brig—, Jacocks, Mafter, of and for Bofton. Dec.z. The Army is healthy and in high Spirits ; but the rifle-barrel Men continue to defart 10 and 12 ata Time. They arrived at Ninety-Six the 21t ule. where they were building a Fort, and were to move for- wards to Keowee as Yefterday. Dec. 8. In alerter from Augufta, dated z4th ult. it is faid, ¢ That the whole Chattaw Nation of Indians are now in the Bridifh Intereft, except about a Hundred whom the Frénch employed and paid as Rangers. That the Superintendent fill remained at the Oaktuitees : and that the Mortar of the Oakboys, with 18 Warriors, is gone to join the Cherookees. On Saturday laft failed from Rebellion Road, for Pro- vidence, His Majefty’s Ship Mermaid, James Hack- man,Eq; Commander ; having on board his Excellency Major g}cncrnl SutrLey, Governor of« the Bahama- Iflends, &c. There have been no Advices received fince our l:f that can be relied on, relative to our Army. Some Waggoners from Ninety fix, report, that Yefterday {e’nnight, it was affirmed there with {ome Confidence, that it had paffed Twelve-mile River with- out Oppofizion from the Indians, and was within 6 Miles of Fort Prince George. On Thuefday laft arrived here Capt. Dec. z2. On the gth inftant, our army command- ed by his Excellency the Governor, arrived at Fort Prince George, oppofite to Kcowee, the firft town in the Cherokee nation, after a very fatiguing march of ten days: The fame evening 700 men from Lieut. Cel. Singleton's corps joined the army, and made it 1700 ftrong. The(msll pox was at Keowee, but the @overnor had taken all poffible precautions to prevent any communication with that- place, which is on the other fide of the river ; and we make no doubt they will prove effe€tual. Six Catawbas alfo joined thearmy with the 200 men above mentioned, but they had pafzs of health from juftice Wyly atthe Waterees. His Ex- cellency had difinifizd all the Cherokees that went along with him, except 28 men of the greateft note, who re- mained with him ar the fort ; thefe declared themfelves perfe@tly fatisfied to remain there in order to talk upon fuch points as might be neceflary for effe&ting an ac- commodaiion : And the Little Carpenter, and other headmen and warriors were on their Journey thither; {o that it is likely that conferences betwecn the: Gover- nor and the heads of the nation are by this Time begun.
