N From the LONDON GAZETTE. “fxtraft of a Letter from General Barrington, fo the Right Honourable Mr. Secretary Pitt, dated, Head Quarters, in Cape ftere, Guadalupe, May 9, 1759. HAVE the fatisfattion to inform you, that, by great perfeverance and changing entirely the na- ture of the war,by carrying it on by detachments, I have at Jength made my felf malter of Guada- lupe and Grand Terre, This is a work, Sir, that, I believe, the moft fanguine (confidering our to- tal feparation from she fieet) could not expett to have been performed by fo fmall a body of men. I (hall not in this trouble you with the detail, as I have doue “my feif the honour of {ending it to you in my other letter. I fhall only fay in general, that the great good condu& and zeal of Brigadiers Clavering and Cramp, and the bravery of the troops, gat the better of every obftacle ; forced the enemy in all their entrenchments, and ftrong paffes ; took fifty picces of cannon, and ad- vanced as far as the Capeflerre, the only unreduced part of the country. This at lait brought the ememy to terms. My fituation was fach, that it was ablolutely neceflary, that what was done fhould not be procraiti- nated, as [ was determined to grant no truce for time enough for the inhabitants to recover from their fears. Mr. Moore was abfent, the thing prefled ; and fome refolution was to be taken immediately. That, which I took, was according to the belt of my underftanding ; 2nd I hope, Sir, you will approve cf it. I believe, Sir, the infinite confequence and value of Guadalupe, and Graud Terre, is not perfectly known in England, as (if I am rightly informed) there is more fugar growa here than in all the Leeward-Iflands put together ; befides great quantities of cotton and coffee. The country, efpecially the Capefterre, the fineft I ever faw, watered with good rivers every mile or two’; and a port belonging to it, where all the navy of England may ride fafe from hurricanes. All this can be ex- plained much better, than I can by letter, by Brigadier Clavering, whole infinite zeal for his Majefty’s fervice, and talents as a foldier, I hope will recommend him to prote&tion. Such men are rare ; and I think I may venture to affure you, there are few things in our pro- feflion, that he is not equal to, if it fhould be thought fit to honour him with the execution of any fature com- mands. I have appointed Col. Crump to the government, who, fince Governor Haldane left us, I have made a&t as a Brigadier : His merit is very great, both as a fcl- dier, and a man of judgment : he is of this part of the world ; vnderftands the trade, cuftoms and genius of the peop'e ; and as he thinks nobly and difintereftedly, he would not have accepted of the government, but in hopes of advancing himfelf in the army by that means, I cannot fay, how very ufeful, and how much our fuc- cefles are owing to his good condutt, and great zeal. As I have now nothing to fear from the land, I am repairing as well as I can fort Louis, and fortifying the ifle of Cochon for the greater fecurity of the harbour. The poor people here are in a miferable condition, but I thall do every thing in my power to procure them the things they want, I have the honour to fend you in- clofed the capitulation of the governor, as well as that of the inhabitants. The latter have behaved, in all their dealings, with great candour, and it is a juftice I owe them, to acquaint you with it. It has not as yet been poflibie for me to go round the iflands to fee the different pofts that muft be occupied, I therefore can- not yet determine the exact number of troops that will be neceffary to be left for their defence. The great aflitance I have received from Capt. Lynn, of the Roe- buck, in the different {ervices I have been carrying on for the redu&tion of thefe iflands, ought not to be for- got by me, as well as his firlt Lieutenant Mr. Keating, both whom I beg leave to recommend to your favour. 1 find it is impofiible (from the different parts of the iflands where they are to be received) for me to procure a return of the artillery and ftores (which have been delivered up, in confequence of the capitulation:) to fend by this opportunity ; but I hope to be able to have the honour of fending it very foon. I cannot help congratulating myfelf, that I had juft figned the capitulatian with the inhabitants of Grand- Terre, when a meflenger arrived in their camp to ac- quaint them, that M. Beauharnois, the general of thefe iflands, had landed at St. Anne’s, on the windward part of that ifland, with a reinforcement from Martinico, of 600 regulars, 2000 Buccaneers, and zooo fpare arms for the inhabitants, with artillery and mortars, urder the convoy of M. Bombart’s fquadron. This fupport, had it arrived an hour fooner, mult have made the con- queft of that ifland very difficult, if not impoffible. As foon as he heard the capitulation was figned, he reim- barked again ; Extral of a Lettet from Commodore Moore to the Right Honourable Mr. 8ecretary Pitt, dated, Prince Rupert’s Bay, Dominique, May 11, 1759. Y “the Griffin, which arrived here on the 27th "of April, 1 was honoured with your letter fig- nifying his Majelty’s moft gracious approbition of my condu&, and of the behaviour of thofe under my com- mand, which I took the liberty to communicate to thofe gentlemen : and give me leave to fay, Sir, nothing —— —————— PORTSMOUTH : Printed by D. Fowzie, can contribute fo much to oar happinefs, as exceuting orders to the hooour of his Majefty’s arms, Give me leave, Sir, to congratulate you on the capitulaiion of the Iflands of Guadzloupe and Grand Terre, which Major General Barrington [ends you by this exprefs : in gaining which great honour is due to the troops. The ftrong holds the enemy had, could not be conquer’d but by great condut and refoution. I hope the conquelt will prove as great an acqui- fiition as it appears to me. Itis with great pleafure, Ithink I may fay, Sir, that on this expedition, great unanimity has been kept up between the two corps, as well in obedience to his Majeity’s commands, as from our own inclinations. It has ever been my with to have fuch harmony fubfit, and I flatter myfelf I have always fucceeded. I beg leave to acquaint you, Sir, that on the 2d tnftant, being informed the Freach {quadron. under the command of M. Bompart, “was to windward of Marigalante, I put to fea in the night, and endea voured to get up with them ; but, after beating five days, and having gained very little, two of our crui- zers, that I bhad fent different ways to watch the enemy’s motions, faw them, the 6th inftant, returned betwixt the two iflands into Fort Royal. From the almoft conftant lee currents, it being very difficult for fhips to get to windward, it muft always be in the encmy’s choice, whether they will come to a general altion or not. Their fquadron confifts of nine fail of the line, and three frigates. 1 fhall in conjunéticn with Generai Barrington, give every afliitance in my power to any other fervice.
