I arrived here Jaft Night from Crown-Point: The Day beforea Flag ot Trucecame from Quebeck, with a Letter from M. Montcalm, direéted to General Am- herft ; this Letter was dated at Beau Ville, Auguft 5th; (=hich Placeis a Lutle below Qucbeck ; ) here Mon fizu: Montcalm expedled Generai Wolfe would land his Army, it being the moft natural Place for that Pur- pofe : therefore he entrewchied fierz with all his Forces, in order to give him 2 warm Reception : But it appears that General Walfe out general’d him ; for he only makes a Feint Landing, or lands a few Troops upon the North Side the River, at or near the Place before- m2ntioned ; but lands the main Body upon Point Le- vee, the South Side of the River, which 1s oppofite the T'own, draws his Boats over the Point to avoid the ‘Cannon of the Town, pulhes them in again, 2nd lards upon the North Side, above the Town, where Monf. Montcalm fays, General Wolfe has been cntrenched ; cannonading and bombarding the Town 18 Days, till ke had almoft deftroyed the Town ; and feems deter- mined tohave it at all Events. — He fuither fays, he knows not but he may fall into the Hands of the Englith ; and if he thould he doubts not he fhail be well ufed, inafmuch as he has always treated the En- glith {o well, contrary to the expiefs Orders from his Mafter ; as he is able to demonttiate by 24 Letters he wears in a Cafe under his Arm — e farcher fays, his Family are gone to Trois Rivere ; donbrs not but they will fare well, having the Eoplith to guard them cn one Side, and the French on the other.—While the Fiag of Truce was difpatching the Bufinel:, one of their Men deferted, and came to us the next Day : I underftoed the Sum and Subflance of what he f2id was ; -——That 'twas over’ with Canada —A large Fort is buiiding at Crown- Point goo Vards in Circumferrence; “the Trenches to be dug 14 Feet deep, and two thirds of the Way in falid Rock ; in which they make great Progrefs,—We have a mnoft gloricus Campaign, Joy and Health appedrs in. every Countenance ; tho' the Fatigue and Labour is very hard upon the Soldiers ; no Murmuring or wrangling : All things go on fmooth and eafy ; the General {cems to be endowed with al fiolt divine Qualifications for making and keeping up Feace Harmony and Uvanimity in the Army.” Lalt Tuefday died here Aster WarLgy, Efg; who for many Years palt has been one of his Majefly’s Jnttices of the Peace for the County of Suffolk. By the Courier from Albany we learn, That Gen. Amherlt with the army {till remained at Crowa Point, where they were building another Brig ot 18 fix and nine pounders, and which was near ready to launch : —That Captain De la Broiiz had the chief command of g French Veffels of Force on Lake Champlain, whom our {couting Partys difcovered almeft every Day .within a few Leagues of the Fort.—That every Thirg was in great forwardnefs in order to proceed to St, Jebn's 5 and that ’twas faid aLL would be ready to put off by the z3d ult. Extra& of a Letter from Crown Point, Augult 17. —¢ Tavo days ago a flag of Truce arrived bere from M. Montcalm, to the General 5 after having propored to make an exchange of prifoncrs, be informed bim that Gen. Wolfe landed the 12th of Tuly onthe other fide the river St. Lawrence, where be had built batteries, from awhence be thresv bombs, carcaffes and red bot fEot into the tozvm, avhich be Jecmed determined to burn and d:firoy. Mont- calm’s letter is dated the 30th of July, from bhis camp at Beaupart, The tavo armies awere near each other, that it could not be long before they awould come to blows : that Montcalm was encamped in an entrenched camp 3 miles Jrom Quibec, aith his rear towards the river St. Charles over avhich there were feveral bridges which Gen. Wolfe i [l A\ will be obliged to pafs. General Walfe's army is landed a little lowcer dowwn, at the fame [ide of the riwer St. Law. ~ rence, where they are making proparations to chace Mont- calm jrom bis camp, from whence. he avill retire to the beighus round Quebeck. A deferter from the ‘regiment of Lansiedoc, came yeflerday and join'd us ; be made bis ¢Jeape the day before, from one of their armed weflils. Hetells us, that Mon/. Bullimack is encamped wijth 3000 men'on the Ifle Denoix, at the end of this Lake. ke encmy's vef- Jels keep cruizing abokt 20 miles from us.” It was reported at Aibany, that the Enemy had a- bandoned St. John’s, and retired to Quebec. Some deferters that are come into our camp from St. John’s, fay, That the French regalars at that place had infilted that the Indians then there thould quit the fort, upon a confidgnce that they were of themfelves able to defend the Fortifications without their affitance; upon which they left it; and thereremainsat St Jobn's not more than 1200 regulars, and about 13 or 14c0 Canadians, with two batteries. John- fon had returned to Ofwego from Niagara, znd that by his motions it was conjectur’d he was, with his Indi- ans, &c. going to Cadaraqui, theace to Ofwegatchi, and fo down to Montreal. PO RTEMOUTH We hear from Berwick, that a few Days ago two Boys, about 10 or 12 Years of Age, being out in the Woods, difcovered two young Bears upon aTree ; when one of the Boys, with a Glub, climbed up after them, whilft the other with the {ame Kind of Weapon ftaid below : On the Boy’s approaching them they made a Noife, which alarmed the old Bear, who immediately run vp the T'ree after the Boy, who got out on a Limb, where the old Bear follow’d him, with her voracious Jaws wide open ready to devour him, when he gave her fuch a {mart Blow on the Nofe that fhe inftantly drop’d on the Ground, where the other Bay with his Club foon kili’d her ; as alfo the two young ones. Laft Saturday Mr. Nicholas Powers of Dover, going up the River, in his Way home, was drowned. He has left a Wife and feveral Children, Lafl Sunday died hereof an dpoplexy in the 1/ Viar of her Age, Mrs. Elizabeth Emerfon, @ Maiden Lady, and Daughter of the late Reverend Mr, Emerfon of this Town.
