Flewcher, of the Rangers,—1I had it from his own " Mouth,—he fays, that he was in the Fort, and wrote his Name on the Flag-Staff, —he would have hoifted a Flag of fome Kind, but the Enemy left not fo much as the Haliards— The French were feen by him about 15 Miles down the Lake; by the Sloops and Battoes feen they were about 2000, 300 of which were Indians, _who they were oblig’d to keep continaally drank, to prevent their deferting from them. Fletcher with sbout 150 Rangers and Light Iofantry : That the Fort atTicondgroga is the ftrongeft and neateflt in America, as the Engineers fay, being founded on a Rock,the Ditch round it dug in a Rock, and the Cafematesin a Rock : That General Amherft with his whole Army ( except- ing three Regiments which are ftation’d at the con- quer'd Pofts)were at Crown Point, and preparing to fet off in order to attack St. John's: That Captain Jacobs, who was a Prifoner at Crown Piont run away from the Enemy asthey were making off, and came and told the General, who immediately ordered the above Party to go and take Poffeflion: That on the 25th ult. 5 or 6 Teamiters were kill'd and fcalp’d juft off the Shore this Side the Lake ; and a Number are mifling fuppos’d to be made Prifoners :— And that on the 28th, the Corpfe of the late brave Col. Town- fhend arrived at Albany and was décently inter’d. ' Niagara they defended brave- ly, in Expetation of a Reinforeement from Venango, which come the Day they {urrrendre’d, and made a bold Artack vpon our Army. It is faid all the Indians but the brave Mohawks food Neuter the firft Onet the Enemy made, to fee, it is thought, which Way the Scale would turn ; for I believe it was imprinted in their Mind the French were invincible. As foon as they found to the contrary, and that the French gave Way, it is faid bat a Yard of Ground, they fell on them like fo many Butchers, with their Tomabawks and long Knives, hooping, and thouting, as if Heaven and Earth were coming together, and kill’d Abundance of the Enemy ; the Number of Prifoners exceed 700. Whether the Barbarities at Fort William Heory, and Ohio has influenc’d any of our Troops to encourage the Savages is uncertain ; but fure it is, thet molt of the French that come from Venango are Encouragers of fuch Crueltics, and I hope at this Time they have Satisfaltion.” Friday laft Huldy Dudley was convifled at Cam- bridge of the deteftable Crimes of Adultery and Inceft, and was fentenc’d by the Court to fet upon the’ Gal- lows with a Rope about her Neck, and to be whip'd ; which Sentence is to be executed at Cambridge next Thurlday in the Forenoon.
