THE congaeflt of Guadaloupe will be one of the greatelt acquifitions made to the Britifh Empire fiace the taking of Jamaica ; and appears 1o be the happy confequence of our prefent wile Adminiftras tion in profecuting this war chiefly at Sea. And as that worthy Perfonage who projeéls our expe- ditions with wi{dom, and carries them into execution with fteadinels and {ecrecy, appears to be ready to weceive information from the meaneflt of his Majelty’s fbjefts, I humbly beg leave to offer my well-intended ¢hough mean tributs relative fo that 1fland. And if I 3aay prefume to offer my thoughts thereon, it would bie to grant patents for the lands to the Settlers on cer- {:ain conditions, among others thefe two. ¢ t. That all the Daties on their Sugar fhou'd be paid to the Colle@or of his Majefty's Cuftoms in that ifland; the faid duties to be equal (o the prefent four and a half per cent. paid by the Geatlemen of Barbadoes and the Leeward Iflands before thipping, as alfo what may re- main to the Crown in England, after deduéting the drawbacks opon exporting Britifh Sugar at this prefent ime ; the faid duties to be paid in the fpecie of fugar ias cath may be fo fcarce as to make it very inconveni- ient to the Planters there to pay itin any other manner. . 2. That the Gentlemen Settlers of that Ifland fhou!d #hip all their Sugars in Britifh vefTzls directly to Holland, $weden, Hambro’, or any other Foreign port, with- cut expence or lofs of time to call in at Great- Britain. This fcheme would be attended with ‘many advan- tages to the Mother Country, of which the following rare a few. : : : 1. It will enable the Gentlemen of Guadaloupe to fhip their Sugarsearly to ail theForeign markets ; which . will not only be a great advantage to them, but greatly injurious to our rivals the Freanch, who engrofs all that trade at prefent, and wound them ina very fenfible maaner, as it will enable us, in Britith vefifels, to carry what was formerly French property te the very fame places where the French thipping ufed to trade. =« By thefe Means all the Sugar from the other Britith Colonies would remain with eurfelves for home confumption, be diftributed all over Great- Britain, and thereby prevent its ever rifing fo high as it has of late years, _ ; 3. And, which is not the leaft to be regarded, here- by a confiderable conftant annnal remittance of Britifh. produce would be fent into thofe Nocthern ports, from whence we haveat prefent fo much timber, iron, hemp, flax, &c. and for which we now chiefly pay in fpecie, or bills ; and thereby bring the ballance of trade with them the nearer to a par j Mauch more might be faid on this copions fubject, but this fhall fuffice at prefent from him who wifhes to be able to fublcribe himlelf, March 29, 1759. Tuefday night Mr. Fielding having received infor- mation upon oath, of an illegal concert then carrying on ata pablic houle in Bunhill Fields, at which were prefentbawds, whores, apprentices and other diforderly perfons, he granted a warrant which was executed that night by the peace officers, aflited by a party of guards; and all who could not givea good account of themf{elves were taken into cuftody, and examined the next miorn- ing before the above magiftrate, and dealt with accord- ing to law. Thefe illegal iop concerts, are generally fet on foot under pretence of charity, to collelt innocent young men together, that the bawds, who are at the bottom of thele concerts, may have an opportunity of introducing the young ladies under their tuition to the acqaiintance of the apprentices. The bawds and com - mon whores who were found at the abuve concert were fent to Bridewell.
