Chefter, in 23 Days from St. Chriftophers, by whom we learn, That Gen. Hoplon (at Guadaloupe) fent a party of 600 men with g pieces of Cacnon and a Mortar into the Country againft the Enemy, who having Intelligence thereof, one Grand Jofeph (fo called) late Commander of a French privateer, told the Governor thatif he would grant him 800 fuch Men as he thould pick, he would go out and cut the Dogs to Pieces ; Monfieur, in purfuance of his Scheme, fallied out ; bat being timely difcovered by the Party they immediately planted their Cannon in a Trench, and leaving a {mall Party to ma- nage the fame, the Remainder of the party advanced towards the Eaemy, who came up very furious, upon which the Eaglith retreated towards their Cannon, and opening to the Right and Left for the Cannon to play, which being well charg'd, had the defired Effeét by making a great Slaughter of the Eaemy, and in par- ticular of Grand Jofeph, who was difpatch’d in three parts by a Bomb : Oar Party then {urrcunded, killed and took the whole of the Survivers. Tozar arrived here in g Weeks from Briftol : From a Briftol Print of the zoth of Jan. we have the following Articles.—That Admiral Saun- ders was foon to fail for America with a large Fleet, __the Ships being near ready for the Sea.-—That 60,000 / French Troops are forming on the Coaft of France, to guard the Kingdom againft any further Attempts of the Eoglith.—That all the Tracfports bound to America with Troops were order’d to Portfmouth.— That the Parliament had met, and fome freth Propofals were offer’d for a Ceflation of Arms, by a Neutral Power, ~—That a Packet was arrived with the agreeable News \} of the Sarrender of Fort du Quefne.—And that a large { Train of Artillery were embarking on board the Fleet firting out for America. Capt. Grifwald who had been out of St. Kitts 55 Days, and was bound for New- London, went afhore on Cape Cod the z3d ult. at 4 0’Clock in the Morning ; 22 Days before he fpoke with Capt. Mills from Pifca- taqua for Virginia, a great Way to the Eaftward, who had beenput 45 Days ; Capt. Grifwald fupplied him with fome Provifion, and left him well. Since our laft the Captains Bruce, Far and Wright arrived here in about 9 Weeks from London : They came out under the Convoy of the Succefs and Mermaid Men of War, of 20 Guns each, with the South.Caro- Jina Trade, and abouat zo Sail of Veflels bound to differ- ent Parts of this Continent. Captain White, bound hither, and who came out with the above Convoy, is not yet arrived. Wednelday lalt arrived here from Halifax in eight Days, His Majelty’s Ship Hind, Robert Bond, Efg; Commander ; in whom came Col. Young, and the Rev. Mr. Nathanael Cotton ; with Difpatches from Admisal Darrel to his Excellency the Governor. We learn from New Yoik, that Admiral Bofcawen having declined the Command of the Squadron deftined up the River St. Lawrence, Admiral Saunders is ap- pointed, who is expelled early, with 14 Ships of the Line, and 4 Frigates. General Wolfe is to command 8oco Men on the fame Expedition. Thefe Ships with thofe now at Halifax, the Troops with Mr, Wolfe, and three Regiments at prefent in America, conflitutes the Armament for that great Enterprize. General Stan- wix is to command on the Ohio, and General Monck- ton to the Eaftward. Sir Charles Hardy is married to a Lady of great Fortune. We hear from Salem, that laft Saturday a Lad about 17 Years old, named Eborn, was found murdered and concealed under @ Parce! of Boards in that Place ; the Perpetrators of this hortid Crime were not difcovered when this Account eame from thence. POR™SMOUT H. Wednefday next is appointed by Aathority to be obferved as a Day of FASTING and PRAYER throughout this Province.
