PHILADELPHIA, Aiguft 17 . ON Thurfday, the Third Inftant, che Britannia Privateer, Captain M‘Pher- fon, arrived herein 21 Days from Jamaica, from whom we have the following Account, wiz. That on the 15th of May laft he took 4 large Ship from Leoganne, with Dutch Papers, and a French Crew on board, into “which he put his firft Lieutenant, a Midfhip- ‘yman, and 18 Hands. The next Morning, being then off the Weft Caices Bank, he ‘faw another TargeShip, which he gaveChace to, came up with, and found to be a Frigate with 20 Guns upon one Deck. About 10 0’Clock the Britannia fhewed her Colours, and fired 2 Gun, which the Frenchman re- turned, ‘hoifted his Colours, and for about an Hour fired his Stern Chaces conftantly at Capt. M‘Pherfon, without his returning one Shot. Afterthis he gave theFrigate a Broad- fide, and ran out his Oars, in order to get nearer the Ship 5 but finding that moft of the Enemy’s Shot took Place, and his Peo- ple at theOars much expofed, fome of whom were already killed,he laid them ‘in, and be- gan the Aéion, which continued ‘equally fevere on both Sides for about an Hour 3 during which Time he experienced that the Frigate was too heavy for him at fuch a Diftance, therefore determined to lay her along Side ; wpon which he ceafed Firing, ran out his Oars again, and being fully re- folved on boarding, fixed Lanniards to the Oars, that they might be launched over- board, and expected every Moment tohave theirGrapplings on board theEnemy ; when by fome"Miftake, the Oars were launched without Orders, and thePiivateer was at leaft twice her own Length from the Frigate, and could not make Way enough to run up to her ; {o that he was obliged to engage a fe- cond Time in-a very different Manner from what was intended ; having then no other ‘Chance but to difpute it at that Diftance with a Ship of 22 Nine-pounders, within half Piftol thot, and, at the fame Time, fo unfortunate, as not to be within Reach of heaving a Hand Granade into her,nor could they get nearer or farther off from one ano- ther, there not being the leaR Breath of Wind. Thus the Engagement lafted for about an Hour and a Half, in as imart a Manner, pethaps, as has happened betwixt twoShips, when Capt. M‘Pherfon was wounded in the Breaft by a Wadd ; in about Half an Hour after had his Right Arm fhattered by a Shot above the Wrift ; and immediately vpon that received another Shot, which almoft carried away the fame Arm above the El- bow. Upon this he was obliged to be car- ried down to theDo&or,after firft requefting the fecond Lieutenant to continue to fight the Ship, for that the Enemy muft foon ftrike, and encouraging his People to ftand by her ; which they all promifed to do,and in general did, fighting moft gallantly ; but the Captain, with great Surprize and Sor- row, foon after heard the Orders given for ftriking his Colours, tho’ he had often pub- lickly declared he would never ftrike to that Ship ; and this happened juft at the fime when the Frenchman had ordered his Co- lours to be ftruck ; fo that a Moment or two’s Delay in hawling down the Britannia’s Colours, would have faved her, and made a Prize of the Frigate. Capt. M‘Pherfon’s ‘Company confifted of r18 Men ; his Metal 16 Six pounders, and fix fmall Guns on the Quarter Deck ; he had 12 Men killed out- xight, and 2% wounded, five of which have fince died of their Wounds. The Frigate mounted 20 Guns, Nine-pounders, but be- D - 4 PORESMOUTH : Printed by D, FowLE, of whom this Paper may be had at QneDollar per Annum, ing pierced for 22, fought 11 of a Side, had 22 Men killed, the Number of the Wounded notknown. «fhe Britannia had 270 Shot thro” her Larboard Side, fome of which un- der Water ; and the Mafts,Yards and Rig- ging of both Ships, were in a moft (hatter’d Condition, moft of which fhot away. Capt. M*Pherfon’s firlt Lieutenant, in the Prize, was in Sight during the A¢tion, and feeing the Privateer’s Fire much {marter towards theEod of theEngagement than theFrench- man’s, and obferving her Coloars flying, and the Frigate’s ftruck (a French Fineffe, in . order to deceive him) imagined Captain M-*Pherfon had taken her, fo bore down upon him, when he was breught to, and taken. The French Captain ufed Captain M*Pherfon in the moft humane and genteel Manner ; and finding it impofiible, in the Condition the Veflels were in, to carry the Privateer with him, after throwing all her Guns and Ammunition overboard, gave her to him, and wifthed him fafe into Port. In eight Days after he, with great Difficulty, got to Jamaica, amere Wreck. The firft and fecond Lieutenants, with five of the Britannia’s People, were carried off in the Frigate. < 5 ¢ 5Q) . $B3 T HE feveral Licenced Perfons in Berwick, ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED, to meet me there at Capt.
