Though fome foreign gazettes have told us, that orders were come down to Breft for fitt- ing out z2 fhips of the line, with four frigates, fome bomb-ketches, and 1g tranfports ; and that 14,000 1and forces are to embark in this fleet, not for Ame- rica, but for a fecret expedition much nearer home, as they infinuate 5 we have the pleafure to find by private accounts, that they are not capable of equip- ping any fach naval force at Breft ; that they have but two men of war in that harbour ready to put to fea ; that the thips fately returned from Americaare laid up, and the failors had leave to go to theirre- {pedtive habitations ; ard, in fhort, that there is but httle probability of their being able to make any confiderable figure at Sea this year. The reafon of this, we apprebend may be, that France cannot well snind bufinefs on both elements at once 3 and as they per- ceiwe it impoffible for them to rifeto an equality avith Britain af fea, while they have a land war upon their bands, they will make their greatefi efforts on the con- tin.nt, boping that if they can, aith the affiffance of their numerous allies, bear down Prufia, they fball afterwards be able to difiate terms of Peace to England, and make themlelves ample amends for whatever they may [uffer in their trade and colonizs—1It is further obferwable on this occafion, that the mighty navy which Louvis X1V. bad at the time of the Revolution, was raifed during the indolent, luxurious, and corvupt reign of Charles 1L, and notwishflanding the dreadful blow 10 the French marine at the battle of La Hogue 1} of May 16Q2, by the bravve Admiral Ruf- g engage Tourville, the French Admi- L in the morning, and the fire Lo the afternoon, when the gway for their o7 Extra& of a private Lettcr from M advid, 1! « The whole of thofe formidable Armargnts, which are to fail out of our Ports thg)¥ €2r, amant to no more thaa this; a Squadron tm:mrd theCufts in the Summer, and to prote&® our Trade fromihe Cerfairs ; and another Squadron which is to faillin Auguft, to meet the Flota from America. Several circumftances, not known be- fore, are {aid to be received by the laft Mailsdfrom America, which fet the condutt of the commander in chief there, lately {uperfcded, in a very favour- able light.
