Y Extraft of a Letter from Commodore Holmes to Mr. Cleveland, dated from on board the Seahorfe, at Anchor off Embden, March the 21/, 1758 €Y T is with the greateft Pleafure that I acquaint ¢ my Lords Commiffioners of the Admiralty q of the Succefs of His Majelty’s Ships in the Lqiver. . The Enemy had not fuffered the Buoys to be laid this Vear, thinking by that Means to obftrut any Attempts for the Recovery of Embden by Sea. It was therefore with equal Surprize and Concern that they obferved the Arrival of His Majefty’s Ships Seahorfe and Strombolo ; and after having doubled the Number of their Workmen upon the Batteries they had begun, they fet about raifing three more towards the Sea with all Expedition, expeling to be " attacked from that Quarter. On the 17th the Seahofe and Strombolo anchored between Delfziel and Knok, and on the 18th they came to their Station between Knok and Embden, by which the Enemy faw themfelves cut off from all Communication down the River. They continued working on their Batteries to- wards the Sea-; but at the fame Time made all the neceflary Preparations for evacuating the Place. Laft Sunday was fen’night, two French Privateers of 30 Guns each, anchored in the River Keamare, in-the County of Kerry, and landed foms < Jifeir Men on the Ifland of Valentia, which they plundred, and took away all the live Cattle and other Provifions they met with, while another Party of them landed on the Continent, and plundered two Gentlemen’s Houfes, after which they fet fail, taking with them the Johnfon Privateer of Briftol, of 10 Guns, which was fome time ago de- ferted there by the Crew,after an unfuccefsful Cruize. The fellow, in confequence of this, was whipped fo unmercifully, that the Frenchman inter- ceded for him ; and the Fellow, when he was re- leafed, blefled him for his Humanity, and when he had recovered of his Wounds, took an Opportasity, privately in the Night to repair to his Quarters, where he did not fail to reproach his Commander for his cruel and tyrannical Trearment of his Soldiers, and propoled to defert to the Enemy, with 100 of his Comrades, if he would give him a Letter of Cre- dit to the French Commander in the Nabob's Army. The Frenchman readily fell into the Snare, gave the Fellow the Letter he defired, as well as another, in which he defcribed the State of theArmy, and added fome particalar verbal Inftru&tions, which he did not care to truft on Paper; with all thele the trufty Drummer immediately repaired to his General, and then difappeared. The General made what Ufe he thought proper of thefe Informations, and jult as the Armies came in Sight of eaeh other, caufed a Gallows to be erefted, and hanged up the French- man in full View of his Friends. = “March 23. The laft cartel fhip brings advice that 14 or 15 privateers, from 30 to 26 guns have been unrigged at St. Malo’s for want of hands to man them. There are feveral letters from Spain, which men- tion that the French fleet under the command of M. de Clue was to be efcorted to a certain latitude by a fquadron of Spanith men of war, in order to prevent their falling into the hands of the Englifh fleet,which lies waiting for them —Should this prave true (which we canpot as yet believe) it would as furely bring on a war with Spain, as it did with France, when the French undertook to fupport the Spaniards in their affair in the Mediterranean, at the time of the admirals Matthews and Leftock com- manding, which brought fuch difgrace and fo many unfortunate confequences on the nation.
