P i Extra& of a Letter from Port/mouth, dated Jan. 8. % Advice is arrived here, that Commodore Keppel, in theTorbay, of 8o guns, and Capt. Wheeler in the Ifis of 5o guans, have taken in the bay .a large Freach thip from the South Seas, immenfely rich, and fent her into Plymogth. Out of the number of tranfports that are lying here forty of them are ordered to be got ready for the fea ~ on the firft notice. According to fome private advices, Prince Ferdinand of Brunfwick ~ yreceived orders from the King of Pruffia not to hazard a general en- - gagement with Marfhal Richelieu till he was reinforced - and it is farther faid, that the King of Pruffia fet out from Breflau for Lower Saxony on the 27th of November, in order to take upon him the command of the forces deftined to drive theFrench out of Germany. We hear that orders are given for the getting ready to fail for the Eah Indies eight men of war, which were to relieve the fquadren under the command of the Admirals Watfon and Poceck, which are to be repaired and refitted. ; The troops intended for North. America, have received orders to be ready to march on the firft notice. ; Capt. Bray, of the Adventure armed fhip, who behav'd fo gal- lantly in teking the Machault privateer, is appointed by the Lords of the Admiraity Captain of his Majefty’s fhip Prince(ls Amelia, of - 80 guns, as a reward for his fervices. Six men of war are getting ready to fail for the Bay, in order to join' the 16 left on the French coaft by Admiral Hawke. There are letters in cown from Spain, which brings an account of the great armaments which were making there, and that every thing appears to be preparations for war ; it is likewile faid, that an em- bargo is laid on all Englith veffels from the ports of Spain. A very firong fguadren is ordered to be got ready with all expe- dition at Port{mouth. : ‘Tt is faid that a Dutch fhip laden with bale goods, and an Englith man of war ef forty guns, are loft in the rode of Alderny, and only fifty perfons faved out of both fhips. A certain Ecclefiattic, who flew from France to the Pruffian do- minions fometime fince, being a man of learning, the King took him under his protection, but having lately found out that he carried on a fecret confederacy with the late Queen of Poland, to poifon him, he ordered him to be hung up direétly. " Lifbon, Sept. 26. We have received Advice, that the gth of July, at Eleven in the Night, a very violeat Shock of an Earthquake was felt in the Azores ; that Part of St. George'’s Ifland was {wallowed up, with about 1500 Perfons; that in the Iflands of Tercera, St. Michael, and Fayal, many Houfes were thrown down ; and that all the dnhabitants lived under Tents in the Fields, fince this Difafter. On Monday laft arrived here the Privateer Brigantine' Earl of Loudoun, of New- York, commanded by Capt. John Wailace, difa- bled in ali her Spars, havinghad a {mart two Hours and an half’s Hagagement on the 4th of January laft, with a French Ship (off the Eaft End of Porto Rico) of above 400 Tons Burthen, 16 fix Pound- ers and 84 Men, of and for Marfeilles, from Martinico, laden with * Sagar, Cotton, Coffee, Cocoa, &c. which fhe took the fame Day (the Brigantine Johnfon, Capt. Wright, his Confort, being in Sight) and fent her to New York. The Earl of Loudoun had her fecond Lieutenant, Mr. Hamilton, and fix Men killed in the Engagement, and 16 Men wounded. ; Yefterday arrived in Town the Wolf King, a Creek Chief, (of great Note, and remarkably weli difpofed towards the Englifh)with feveral other Head men of that Nation, and immediately had an Audience of the Governor in the.Council-Chamber ; being con- duéted thither by the Charles-Town Troop of Horfe, and received there by the Hon. Col. Montgomery’s Company of Grenadiers, Some Cherokee Headmen have alfo lately been in Town ; And, to all Appearance, both Nations are at this Time in a2 Temper very advantageous to his Majefty’s Intereft in America ; fo that cur In- dian Affairs, (once very fluQuating thro’ the Artifices and Infinua- tions of the French) now again wear a moft pleafing Afpedt. NE W.Y OR K, February 13. We hear from Weft- Chefter, that on Saturday Night the 4th In- flunt, the Court Houfe at that Place was unfortunately burnt to the ). The fecond Captain of the above Prize, acquaints us,, That the Dogger Decoy, Captain Knights, of this Port, was taken by aFrench 64 Gun Ship, iu the River St. Lawrence, and carried -into Cape- Breton, out of which Place they have 20 Privateers, one a Snow of 16 Guns, formerly the Maffachufetts Country Veflel Prince of Wales, Captain Dowfe, who bad the Mistortune to be taken by a Frigate laft'Summer, and carried into Louifbourg. They have coa- verted the Doggerintoa Brig. Saturday laft the Earl of Leicefter Packet, Capt. Morris failed from hence for Falmouth. The fame.Day was fent in here by Captain Halley of this Port, 2 fmall French Brig, which he took about 26 Days ago, in Compa - ny with a Rhode-Ifland Privateer Sloop: She was bound from Nantz for Cape-Francois, as a Packet, and hasa trifling Cargo, of Flour, &c. Extralt of a Letter from Lifbon, dated the 26th of January 1758. ““ You may depend on what we wrote you the 24th, of the King of Pruffia’s glorious Viclory obtained ower the Aufirians the §th ult.— in which he made upwards of 20,000 Priloners :—He alfo retook Bre- Slaw the 18th or 19thof Jaid Month,and made 10 or.12,000 more Pri- Jomers, as alfo 14 General Officers, and about 300 other Officers.—We look wpon thefe two Vidlories as the laft defirultive Blow the Aufirians could receive.—Qn the oober Hand, the Hanoverians are driving the French before them : and as theKing of Pruffia bas femt 10,000 *eteran. Troops to their dffifiance, the Duke of Richelieu is in a bad Situation.’— By Perfons arrived from Albany we are informed, that a Number of Soldiers belonging to Fort Edward, being out about Bufinefs ac fome Diftance from the Fort, they were fired upon by a Party of the Enemy, and twelve of them killed, and a thirteenth got back to the Fort, but without his Scalp. ’Tis alfo faid, that five more of the Party were miffing.—They likewife inform, that 2 Number of Mo- hawks had been to Ticendorage, killed and {calped fix Frenchmen. We hear from Rhode-Ifland, that laft Week died there, greatly lamented, the Honorable WILLIAM GREENE, Efq; Governor of that Colony. By a Letter from Lifbon dated the 15th of January laft, we are informed, That a Veflel with Highlanders on board bound for Ha- lifax, having fprang a Leak at Sea, had put in there to ftop it. A Privateer belonging to Warren (in Rhode-1fland Government) has taken a Prize Schooner, laden with Sugar, Coffe, &c. and fent her to New- London in Order to be condemn’d.
