Dn Monday Afternoon laft arrived here the Privateer lw Royal Hefter, of 14 Guns,Solomon Davis Commander, his Port, and brought in with him two rich Prizes, a fhip {now,which he tock on the 11th and 1zth of September ,in Lat. 34. 10, on their Paffage from Porto Prince, in ifpaniola, to Bourdeaux, chiefly loaded with Indigo, fome fee, and fugar. The Ship is about 300 Ton Burthen, lled Levebonnere, mounting 14 fix and four Pounders, d 46 Men, and was commanded by Monf Ballon. The ow is about 260 Ton Burthen, called Le Leger,mounting four Pounders, had 66 Men, and was commanded by (. Trenchere.—Capt. Davis firft defcri’d them about 7. the Morning of the 11th, fteering N. N. E. the Wind brge. Davis got chief of his Men from on board the Prize {fnow, and gave the com. manding Officer of her,repeated Orders to keep his Company all Night ; bot in the Morning of the 12th Sept. finding the Prize had left him, and he ftill in fight of the thip, he gave chafe, and engaged her a frefh for three haif Hours, during which the fprung her Luff three different Times, and fired a Broadfide, when the Hefter bearing down to board her, fke firuck, having 3 kill'd and 7 wounded. Thefe two Prizes are efteemed the richeft brought into Amercia this War, being.valued at upwards of £.80,000. There was four Men kiil’d on board the Privateer, and near thirty wounded. It feems Monf. Trenchere, Mafter of the {fnow, had taken the Sacrament at Porto Prince, in full Affurance not to finke to the Englifh if attacked on the Voyage, which he firictiy adher’d to ¢ for while Quarters were offering him, he was {o invenom'd, that fuddenly grafping a Poli Axe that lay near him, he hove it with fuch vengeance at one of the Hel- ter’'s Men, that the Blow fra&tur’d his Skull, and the poor Man has been trapan’d for it twice fince his Arrival. 'The French Merchant aifo refufed Quarters,altho’ badly wounded and hardly able to make Refiflance, yet, aitempting it, he was fhot thro’ with a Brace of Balis by one of the Hefter’s Men. The Prifoners taken in the above Prizes, inform, that the Day before they engaged the Hefter, they beat off a Dogger and (chooner Privateers, belonging to New Yoik, the latter of which, tho't to be Capt. Arent King, they fuppofe to have funk, as after the firft Broadfide the French {now gave her, fhe feil off, and did nct anfwer any of the falfe Fires made by the Dogger the greateft part of the following Night. On the 4th of Sept. a Weck before Capt. Davis came a-thwart his Prizes, in the Latitnde of Bermuda he met with a heavy Gale of Wind or rather Haurricane, which obliged him to throw over board two of his Carriage Guns, and had his Main maft carried away below the Houods ; fo that he engag’d with 12 Guns only, under a Jury-Matit.
