It feems the rattling of the chariot wheels Of the, great GOD of thunder, riding {wift O’er clouds upon the wings of ruthing winds, It can’t be that ! My foul be all attention ! Now faith colleé, exert your utmoft ftrength ! ‘With fhame I own my follies and my fins ; My fins and follies oft have prefs’d me down With guilt and blackned all the facred crofs ; Buc he that hung upon it hath fuftained The mighty load, and eas’d me of the weight, Humbly I trult that my repentant heart Has firm infur’d him my almighty Friend. My GOD! with this dependance I refign My foul, my All to his redeeming hands : I'm ready now to ftand before his bar ; The Judge my Friend, my great fupreme reward, The fcene is awful, bat my Saviour {miles. Death, I defy thy fting ! My Saviour broke Its point when you laid vanquifh'd at his feet, When he from thy dark Vault trivmphant rofe, And took poficflion of the realms of blifs. With joy I'll now défcend thy dreary vale ; The darknefs of it can’t conceal my GOD ; Then I'll refreft me with the cooling fhade, Till thou my Friend fhall turn the key T* unlock heaven's {piendid adamantine gates, ¥or me to range the paradife of GOD Let earthquakes, let ten thoufand Etza's roar, Yet apennines, and alps, and all the hills Whofe heads are crown’d with everlafling fnow ! Rend to their bafis, and together rufh, With fervent heat let elements diflolve ; Let flars, and Juns, and f5ftems, melt like wax, And flow an ocean of tempeftuous fire : Let nature in ocoe common ruin blend ; The fpock I {mile at, for I've gralp’d the chain, That golden chain of love, expanfive fix'd Tao GOD’s eternal throne, by that I hold ; With faith I'll keep my hold, nor let it go, Till my Redeemer with his promis’d love Shall draw the 1o Timitlf, tie centre of mwy joy. Po- Titical as well as religions Confiderations contribute to retard the affembling and marching of the contingents of divers Prioces ané Circles of the Empire. Some think, that fince the Houfe of Auftria is back’d by fo powerful an Army of French, their Afliftance may very well be difpenfed with, as rothing could be more agreeable to France, than to fee the Germans worrying one another, that fhe might at the Eund take Advantages of it. And as for the common People in general among the Proteftants, they have feen enough to forefee, that if the King of Pruffiafhould be over powered and forced to make a Peace on France’s and Aaftria’s Terms they could have no Security hereafter for the Enjoyment of their civil and religious Liberties : And hence it is that fo great a Number of Soldiers have deferted-from the Troops of the Circle of the Upper Rhine ; and hence the Mautiny and Defertion among the Duke of Wirtemberg’s Forces, who have plainly declared they would not contribute to the Op- preffion of a Proteftant Prince. By this Specimen of their Temper ’tis clear, that if the King of Pruffia had Money, he could have Men enough in the Empire to Face all the Forces that France and Auftria could bring againft him. As for the Swedith Contingent, which is fuppofed to have been purchafed with French Gold, we fancy it will be no difficult Matter to make the private Men defert as {oon as they come into Prufian Pomerania ; the Swedes being as rigid and zzalous Proteflants as any in the World. A Meflenger, who is arrived at Whitehall, brings an Account, that the Regiment of Royal Hunters, which His Majefty had raifed in his Eiectoral Dominious, had firuck fuch Terror into the French Army, that their Parties fly be- fore them wherever they appear. Thefe Hunters are com- pofed of Gentlemens Game Keepers, who are trained up to Shooting, from Ten Years old ; and are {uch dextrous Mark(- men, that they will fhoot 4 fingle Ball thro’ a Butt no bigger than the Crown of a Man’s Lat, at 200 Yards Diftance. A Party of thefe Hunters came up, with about 150 French Horfe, and almoft in an Inflant, they levelled every Man of them with the Ground. They are all cloathed in Green, have each a rifled barrel Gun, two Piftols in Holfters, two in their Girdles, befides a fhort Dagger, and a Broad Sword ; and are fuppofed equal to the fame Number of any Trocps in the World. Itisfaid that M. d Eftrees has made Repre- fentations to the Duke of Cumberland, againit this Regiment as Murderers ; their Method of Fighting, being contrary to the Rules of War. It is the Opinion however, of Grotius, that Invaders may be repelled Ky every Means the Invaded have in their Power. WHITEHALL, Fuly 23.
