We hear from Barbados, that five French Indiamen were arrived at Martinico in a very fickly Condition, and had loft a great many of their Hands, on their Paffage. From Cumberland County we learn, that on the 30th ult. two young Mén, lying in Wait for fome Deer, were fired upon by Indians, when one of them was killed ; the other efcaped : And on Thur{day laft, two Men went out to hunt fome Horfes, near Tobias Hendrick’s, and are fuppofed to be killed, or carried off, as they have not been heard of fince. Our Accounts, in general, from the Frontiers, are moft difmal ; all 2greeing that fome of the Inhabitants are kil- Jed or carried of, Houfes burnt, and Cattle deftroped dai- ly ; and that at the fame Time they are afilited with a fevere Sicknefs, and die faft ; fo that in many Places they are neither able to defend themfelves when attacked, nor to run away. On Friday laft arrived here Captain Cuzzins from Ja- maica. On bis Paffage thither from this Harbour, he was taken by a French Xebeck and {loop, and carried into Port-Louis, where he was well ufed, aud, after fome Time, fent in a Flag of Truce to Jamaica, with 17 other Mafters of Veflels. TheVeflels brought into Port- Louis while he was there, were a {choorer and {lcop, from *New- York, Captains Thomas and Morlidge ; and a fmall Brigantine, belonging to Liverpool, from the Coaft of Guinrey. On his Voyage home he fpoke with Captain Fofter, in the Thiftle of Liverpool, off the Weft End of Cuba, for Jamaica, who had with him a French Ship, which he took off Dominico, from Bourdeaux, laden with Dry Goods, faid to be very valuable ; but as he had mil- {ed the Ifland, he intended for fome North- American Port with his Prize. By Letters that came in the Packet, to Gentlemen in this City from their Correfpondents in London we have Advice, That a grand Alliance is agreed upon between the Courts of Spain and England ; and, that they intend to a& in Conjun&ion in fome very grand Enterprife, for which Purpofe large Provifion was making in the Ports of both Kingdoms ; that the Populace of the Orange Party in Holland, being jealous of the growing Power of France, were inclinable to take up Arms in Favour of England ; and the King of Pruflia, in a Letter to his Bri- tannick Majefty, blames himfelf much, in not waiting for a Reinforcement af 12,000 Men that was on their March’ to join him, the 18th of June the Day he attacked Mar- fhal Daun, the Auftrian Army confifted of 65,000, and his own not more than 32,000 :—That great Preparati- ons are making for embarking twelve or thirteen Regi- ments of Forces, befides a large Train of Battering Can- non, Scaling Ladders, &c. that the Tranfports were tak- ing in their Provifions for fix Months ; and the Admirals Bofcawen (who was returned with his Fleet from an un- fuccefsful Cruize in the Bay, having met with only five French Privateers, who, as ufual, efcaped) and Hawke, are to command the Fleet ; that various were the Reports concerning their Deftination, fome inclining to think they are going up the Mediterranean ; others as confidently affirm they are for the Raltick ; while fome others fay, that it is our turn to fpread the Terrors of an Invafion, and that.they are aétually defigned againft the Southern Parts of France, tho’ in all Probability they may be all miftaken, as the Defigns of the Miniftry are kept very fe- cret ; and that thefe Reports of their Deftination, are no- thing more than to alarm France, while they may be de- figned upon fome of their remote Settlements,—That a fumptuous Monument is erefling in' Weftminfter Abbey, to the Memory of Sir PETER WARREN. ‘Saturday laft one John Coates, who Ilately lived at Conojohary, in Albany County, pafled by here in his Way to New. Jerley ; but firft given us the following Account, viz. That fometime laft Week there were 46 Perfons carried off by the French and Indians from the /German Flats.—That Numbers of the (pretended) Friend Indians were feen among the Enemy.—That the Inhabi- tants are moft all moving away.—And that the Enemy, it was thought, confifted of fome Hundreds, pillaging and ravaging the Country, and captivating or {calping all they come acrofs,Coates himfelf being one among the Fugitives. Tuefday laft fail’d from this Port for Nova- Scotia, his Majefty’s Ship Enterprize, Capt. Donkley :—As did alfo for New-Yorkand on a Cruize the Province Ship of War King George, Capt. Hallowel ;—and for Halifax, with ‘the Trade, the Province Snow of War, Capt. Dowfe. - Tuefday in the Afternoon John Childs, who had given public Notice of his Intention to fly from the Steple of _Dr. Cutler’s Church, perform’d it to the Satisfattion of a great Number of Spectators ; and Wednefday in the After- noon he again performed it twice ; the laft Time he fet Forrsmoury, in N { 1 L off with two Piftols loaded, one of which he difcharged in his Defcent, the other miffing fire, he cock’d-and fnap’d againbefore he reached the Place prepared to receive him. Itis fappos'd from the Steeple to the Place where the Rope was fix’d was about 700 Feet upon a Slope, and that he was about 16 or 18 Seconds performing it each Time. As thefe Performancies led many People from their Bu- finefs, he is forbid flying any more in thgs Town. * The faid Child fays he has flewn from the higheft Steeples in England, and oft the Monument, by the Duke of Cum- berland’s Defire. Laft Monday was brought into this Port, by Capt. Wil- liam Barry, a French Prize Snow of about 140 Tons, ta- ken by the Privateer Ship Hertford, Thomas Lewis late Commander, on the 12th of July lalt, which was 15 Days after the Privateer left this Port : The faid Snmow was bound from Cayenne, (the Capital of the French Settle- ments in Soath-America, bounded on the North by Suri- nam ) to Nantz in France, laden with Cotton, Coffe, Cocoa, Rocoa, ard Sugar, Guiliamme Rainboult, Com- mander ; which Prize Capt. Lewis carried into Fayal, one of the Azores or Weltern-Iflands, where he tarried 12 Days, and gave the Commapd of her to Cadr.Barry; who with the Hertford left Fayal the 2d of Auguit laft.—On the 7th of the fame Month Capt. Lewis died on board his fhip ; and the firft Lieutenant (Capt. Coppinger) took the Command of her :— On the 10th the Hertford parted from her Prize, and ftood to the Weftward in purfuit of a Ship that juft hove in fight. Capt. Barry left in Fayal, a French Privatees fhip call’d the Gloria Flame, of Bourdeaux, commanded by Captain Rodrigue, mounting 16 fix pounders and 11 {wivels, with 120 Men ; by which Privateer Capt. Barry had been taken on the 3d of May laft, in the ShipWilliam and Eli- zabeth, on his Voyage from Port-Royal in South-Caroli- na to the Orkneys, being in Lat. 46 and 30, and Long. about 34 from London, her Cargo confifting of 943 Catks of Rice, qt. 234 Ton, and 11 C. of neat Rice in the whole— The fame French Privateer had alfo taken a fchooner, Capt, Carter, bound from Cape-Fare for Briftol, and two Fithing Veflels, We are likewife inform’d by Capt. Barry, That on the 8th or gth of July laft, between g and 10 0’Clock in the Evening they had a violent fhock of an Earthquake in the Weltern Iflands, [the fhock felt in this Town in the fame Month, was on the 8th Day,] but no confiderable Dam- age done in any of them, as he could learn, except at St. George’s, where about One Hundred Dwelling- Houfes were deftroyed, and great Numbers of People in them lcft their Lives ; among whom was the Governor, who was buried in the Ruins of his own ‘Houfe. ¢ On the 22d of Augutt, in Lat. 40. Lon 42, the Prince- Frederick Man of War, mounting 66 Guus, Capt. Gor- don, and the Devonthire of 64, Capt. Harman, came up with Capt. Barry, the {atter of which he went on board, and the Captain informed him, they were bound to Hali- fax, and were a Detachment from a Fleet of feven Sail of the Line, bound to the Weft Indies, by Exprefs from England. We hear from Marblehead, That the Mafter of a Fifh- ing-Veflel arrived there informs, That on the 4th Inftant, he fpoke with a Schooner bound from England on her Return to Halifax, from wheuoce fhe had been difpatched as a Packet about 13 Weeks before : fhe had on board 80 Men, had been ; Weeks from England, and was then within about 7 Hours fail of Halifax : But we learn no News by her. Extraft of a LETTER from Halifax, Sept. 5. 1757. “ 1 hawe to acquaint you, that Yefterday arriv’d here from off Louifbourg, the Gibraltar Prize, awho wuas [ent from bence Jome time paft, with Expreffes to Admiral Holbourn: As fbe was fo lucky as to mifs [ecing our Fleet in their return to this Harbour from their Cruize off Louifbourg, /2e took a French $hip of about 160 Tons Burthen, laden with Wine, Flour&5c. from Bourdeaux, bound to Louifbourg ; the Capt. of which fays nine or ten Sail of Store fPips was bound into Louilbourg,and in allProbability bad arrived [afe fince our Fleet came from off Louifbourg.— This Day the Somerjet Man of War of 70 and Eagle of 60 Guns arrived bere from England, iz about 8 Weeks Pafjage ; they were to be followw- ed by three other Line of Battle Ships, to firengthen My. Holbourn’s Squadron.—They bring the melancholy News of the King of Pruflia being defeated by the united Armies of the French and Aaftrians as they lay before Prague, «with the Lofs of 15,000 Men : What the Enemy loft 1 bave not heard. We hear that Capt. Mackey who was bound here in a Brig from Briftol, was taken a few Days after heleft that Place, by three French Letter of Marque Ships ; but they had not been in Poffeflion of buta fhort Time, when they were met with by a Briftol Privateer, who re took the Brig and two of the fhips,and carried them fafe into Briftol: The other fhip was afterwards taken by a Liverpool Pri- vateer, and carried into that Port. Satarday laft Capt. Sharrad arrived here in 6 Weeks from Jamaica, and informs, That on the 14th ult. he met with the Aflitance Man of War, of o Guns, who then had with her a French Privateer Sloop of 10 Guns, and a thip which the floop, in Confort with a Brig, had re-taken from the Englifh : That after the Afliftance had taken the above Prizes, fhe gave Chafe to the Brig, and run her a- fhore on Cape-Corantus, the S. W, Part of the Ifland of Cuba, when the Captainblew her up,together with all the Crew, except about 15 or 20, which got afhore : That the Afliftance then fent her Boat afhore, and bro’t off the Prifoners, who inform'd them, that {he was a Privateer Brig of 16 Carriage Guns, and about 180 Men ; and that the Captain faid before he fail’d, that if he was like to be taken, he would blow her up. They faw a great Number of Heads, Arms, Legs, &c. on the fhore, Yefterday a Gentleman came to Town from Salem, at which Place he arrived from Halifax in 3 Days, who inlg forms us, thattwo Men of War,(fuppofed to be thePrince Frederick of 70 Guns, and the Devonthire of 66 Guns as they have been fpoke with by one or two Veflels on the Banks,) joined the Admiral, which now make his Squadron to confift of 20 Ships of the Line, and but one of them under 60 Guns :— Likewife, that the Pacquet called the Cruizer, Capt. Doran, arrived at New-Y ork, together with her P?;:e', as mentioned in pur laft, We have an Account from Fort Cumberland, that the French Troops were encamped a few Miles from that Fort, to the Number of 4 or 5006; that Col. Lawrence with the T'roops were arriv’d and entrenched there. Luke Mills who came in here Paffenger laft Monday from St. Kitts, we are informi’d That he was ta- ken by a French Privateer of 8 Guns, 36 Men, in his Paf- fage hither from Barbadoes the 12:h of faft Month, in a Sloop, having been out but three Days ; his Cargo con- filting of 74 Hhds of Rum, 4000 wt. of Suguar, Cotton &c. The French kept him and his Men 4 Days, and * then with 3 other Captains, Corner of Newbury. Daniel Warner and Richard Billings of New-London, and 16 Men befides, were put in a Long-Boat, agreeable to their own Choice, with a Sufficiency of Prdvifions in fight of Montferrat, where they arrived before Night, and the next Day to Nevis.——~The faid Privateer had two other Prizes, which they took the Sunday after Capt. Mills. That Jaft Saturday was a Week, he faw - two Privateers belonging to New-York, the Delinceau and Dreadnought,a Snow and a Brig, who had then met with no Succefs ; and the Wednefday following {fpoke with a- nother Privateer Ship Capt. Trout, who had been ouit from New York thtee Days, who informed him that a French Privateer had taken three Philadelphia Ve flels, orie of which was retaken, and the others cirried off — The Briftol Man.of War had taken a French Merchant- man of 4 or gooTons, 26Guns,and carried her intoAnti- gua, a few Days before he lefe St. Kitts, reckoned a very valaable Prize.
