Silver ditto, one Million of Rix Dollars, and 25 Standards ; but as we have no other Authority than a Report, we give it our Readers as fuch. It is expe@ed by perfons of Military Genius, that his Royal Highnefs the Duke will fhortly difplay a fine ftroke of Generalthip and conjeQure that he has a defign of join- ing the Prince of Anhalt, which from Forchem, the laft place we heard of him at, might be efieCled in feven days; ‘and tho” Hanover. would thereby be expofed for a few days, the inconvenience might be made up by fighting the Frenchafterwards on even Terms. O R TS MO U oY H Tbe following Account of Fort William.Henry, is from one of the principal Officers of the New Hamplhire Regiment, awhs avas there during the whole Siege, and in the Breaft Work : being an Extralt of a Letter to——— ~~¢The firft of Auguft we difcovered the French Boats by our Scouts landing in North Weft Bay ; {aw their Smoaks from our Bret Work, which was about 60 Rods from the Lake, next to Fort Edward, on the Ledge of Rocks to the Right Hand as yo# go up to the Lake ; and on Wednefday Morning as foon as Day Light would ferve us we faw a confiderable Fleet of Boeats lying about two Miles off, upon which Col. Monre fent out a Party of a- boat 140 or 15c§#en to try to get fome fat Cattle into the Breft-Work ; but by that Time the Rear of oor Men got oat of Sight, the Enemy began to Fire upon their Front and Sides, but Capt. Saltonftall who commanded Bravely, fired and wjis forced to retreat, the Enemy be- ing two numerous for him, and got into the Fort with the Lofs I believe of abdut 20 Men, and one Subaltron ; and then the Enemy to tht Number of zooo as I fuppofe, came round the Breft Work and fired upon us till After- noon, but our Ordersiwere not to fire till they came pretty clofe ; and we being 5w0 deep all round the Breft Work, and keeping our Firg, they durft not come within 30 Rods of us.—In the Afternoon the French fent a Flag of Truce in by a French Officer, demanding the Fort, bat being refufed, they after a little Space -of Time, feli on with their fmall Arms again, and in fhort, they diverted us two Days with them, till they got a Battery open on the third Day of nine Guns and fome Mortars ; next Day opened another Battery of eleven Guns more, and then afked a Surrender of the Fort, but being again denied, they play’d forioufly with both Caonon and {mal! Arms all Satarday, Sunday and Monday, when they opened a- nother Ditch within 30 or 40 Rods of the Fort, and was about half a Mile nearer to our Breft-Work than their former ; whereupon a Council was called the feventh Day of the Siege, and ninth Day of the Month ; the Refult of which was, that Col. Young fhould gogyith a Flag and afk Capitulation ; upon which Montcalm granted that we fhould march out with all the Hounours of War, Drums beating, Colours flying, and a Piece of Cannon, and in fhort all that we could af; ordefire—(had he performed what he promifed,) bu:/inftead of that-we were very ' smanprnn vilely treated, every Officer and Soldier firipped of Arins and Cloathing, fo that none efcaped with more than a Shirt, Breeches, Storkings and Shoes, and fome no Breech- es ; for my Part I had nothing left but my Shirt, Stock- ings and Shoes, firipped of every Thing I had, and my Papers, which is a very great Lofs to me.—There is ta- ken and killed of the New Hampthire Reégiment and miffing, (which confifted of juft 2z0) 8o, which is a third Part ; the Reafon of which was, we brought up the Rear out of the Breft-Works, and the Indians pick'd us off more than the Front.—I hope there isa Numb® carried away that Msnzcalm will fend back again : I am glad there is returned {o many as there is, for I really thought when they began to kill the Sick and wounded, and lead others away, that they would Sacrifice the Well next, we being: ftripped of our Armsand forbid to refift.—As to General Webb’s fending Relief, I know it would not have done to have fent lefs than Five Thoufand, for I believe that they kept pear 3000 there conftantly ; and upon their engag- ing, they would foon have had as many more ; and lefs, with what we had here, would never have drove them out of their Ditches.— I believe the Enemy confifted of twelve or thirteen Thoufand at leaft.— Cols. Monro and Young behaved bravely ; our Engineers threw their Bombs many Times to a Hair's Breadth, the Balls went exceeding well, and in fhort, every Officer and Soldier . behaved with Refolution and Courage to the [ ft ; and had we known what we fhould have met with would chofe to have kept our Fort till every Man had been flain : the particalar Accounts you will have, and fo I defift.
