v "had but juft fhut it, when nin€ of ten of the Enemy came ‘up to it ; upon which the Centries challenged, and fired fome fhot at them, which was returned for fome Time, but without any Execution on either fide : That then the Yiring cealed for .a while, bot began again, when the Cannon of the Fort was fired to alarm the Country ; and upon this the People got all to their Arms, and were rea- dy to come to the Afliftance of the Garrifon ; which be- ing obferved by the Enemy, they thought proper toretreat: Tfilt fince this Affair happened three People have been killed, and nine carried off from the Mohawk River ; and at Lake George feveral killed and taken : That three of the Garrifon were ‘chaced, ‘on the Twentieth of laft Month, by three French Indians, in fight of the Fort ; and that Sir William_Johnfon had ordered outa Party of Mohawks after them, bat they could 'not come up with them : That Sir William had received Advice from the Six Nations, that there was a large Army of French and Indians coming, by the Way of Ofwego, to the Mohawk River ; at the fame Time begging that he would fend a Body of Men to join them (the Six Nations) in order to give them Battle, before they come on the Froatiers : And that he (Sir William) intends to march the Militia of the County, which, with the Six Nations, will make a confiderable Army. From Reading, in Berks County, there is Advice, that Indians have been feen feveral Times within five Miles of that Town : That fome white Men, that belong to a Party of Indians now on the Frontiers, have been in the Town, ‘and lodged in it : And that one Man in particalar, who, with two other white Men, and an Indian, carried off a Lad, that made his;Efcape from them, while they and 4 more Indians wererunk, is mentioned in the Lad's Affi- ‘davit to have ‘loft the fight of one Eye, and to be much Pock pitted ; that Man flept 1ately in Reading, and has been frequently among the fnhabitants. On Monday Morning laft 50 Men fet out from Cuomrie, and other Townfhips, near Reading, on a Range, in Ex. pedtation’ of bringing in fome Indian Scalps. By the Revenge, Captain Brice, from Providence we learn, that Captain Beak, in a Privateer of that Place, bad brought in there two French Sugar Ships, one of 400, the other of 250 Tons, faid to be very valuzble. He had been ou: byt fixteen Days, and met with them, and two other Ships, off the Weft End of Cuba, and would have taken them all, if he had had Hands to man them. ' NEW.Y ORK, Acgufts. That Fort William Henry was invefted the Third In- flant, by a Body of French.and Indians, is pat Doubt, and very probably are, at this Time, in Poffefion of it :— If fo, Fort Edward falls of Courfe, and where they will flopis hard to determine. And will not this, O my Countrymen ! yet roufe you, in Defence of your Lives, Liberties and Fortunes! A few Volunteers from this City, would give a noble Example, and have a wonder- ful good Effe&t. But if it is otherwife decreed, I have only to obferve, When the Almighty intends the De- firodion of a People, he firft flupifies them. Extra@ or a Letter from a Gentleman at Fort William Henry, to his Friend in New-York, July 26. 1757. — ¢ T am forry that 1 hawe nothing better to relate to you than the following melancholly Affair, wiz. Col. Jobn Parker, awith three of bhis Captains, and fix or feven Subal- terns, with Capt, Robert Maginis, Capt. Ogden, Licut. Canip- bell and Cotes, of the Neaw York Regiment, with about 350 Men, went out on the 21f Inflant, in order to artack the advanced Guard at Ticonderoga by Water, in Whale and ‘ Bay Boats : Dbey landed that Night on an lfland, and fent . &efore Break of Day to the Main Land ibree Battoes, which the Enemy Way-laid and took. ‘Thefe Battoes avere to land 2awo Miles this fide ; they being taken, gave the Enemy In- gelligence of their Defign of Landing. Qur Men next Morn- ing at Day break, made for [aid Point, and the Enemy, wko Anew our Scheme, contrived, as a Decoy, to hawe three Fat- toes making for J#id Point, which our People imagining to be the three Battoes fent out the Evening before, eagerly put 1o the Land, awhere about 300 M.n lay in dmbufb, and from bebind the Point came out 40 or 50 Canoes, Whale and Bay Boats, which Jurrounded them entirely, and cut off every one that aas in the Circle. Col. Parker and Capt. Ogden, are the only two Officers that hawve ¢fcaped with Life, the lattir much wounded in the Head. Upon the whole, only Parker and Ogden efeaped, avith about 70 Men, all the Rimainder, being about 280, are kill'd or taken. Since the foregoing, Colonel Glaxicr has receiwed a Letter Jrom a Serjeant belonging to Capt. Maginis’s Company, who Jays, that in the botteft of the Fire they forced their Battoe 1hre’ the Enemy's Line, being favoured avith the Smoke and Fog, and efcaped with fix or feven more, that avere alive avith him inthe Ba:toe, and landed on the Eaft fide, «wbhere be luckily met aith Captain Weft from Fort Edward, on a Scout 3 andvas every Man made the beft of bis Way as_foon as they landed, nome but himfelf is yet come in [afe.” Extra& of a Letter from Albany, dated July 28. 1757. ¢ —Laft Night late we had an dccount that 60 more of our Wen, fuppofed to be dead, are returned 5 and five others joined Capt. Putnam near South Bay, Jo hape the Lofs won't be fo great as it was at firl} imagin'd.”’ B © S T O N, Auvguft rs. Since our laft feveral Veflels employ’d by Lord Loudin as Tranfports to carry Troops from New-York to Hali- fax, arrived here from the laft Place, being difcharged by his Lordthip from the publick Service; and laft Thurf- day Capt. Phillips arrived here from Halifax, which Place he left the 4th Inft. and by him we have Advice, that the Troops were all embarked, and the Fleet ready to fail, and as the Wind was fair the Day after Capt. Phil- Aips came out, tis tho’t the Fleet took, the Advantage of it, and fail'd on the deftin’d Expedition.—That fuch mighty Quantities of Provifions, efpecially Live Stock, " were brought into Halifax, that they would not pay the P L ou TH, inNew- Hamppbire, Printed by D.Fowie, P & \ JEr Freight thither, and that feveral of the Veffels with Pro- vifions, intended to accompany the Fleet. g About a Week ago Sir William Pepperel, and feveral ‘other Gentlemen of Note, fet out for Springfield, where a large ‘Body of Troops are affembling to be under Sir William, for the Protefion of our Frontiers, or to be o- ‘therwife employed as his Majefty’s Service may require. _And we hear, that every Troop of Horfe in the Pro- ‘vince, except his' Excellency’s Guard, is ordered forth- with to march to the Frontiers. To morrow, in the Forenoon, the Great and General Court or Afflembly is to meet here. Every Day lak Week we had an Exprefs from the Weftward, with an Account of the Seige of Fort William Henry, and the State of our Camps, £5c. near the Lake ; and by that which came in on Saturday; we were inform- ed, that the Garrifon which had bravely defended the Place from the third to the ninth Inftant (Tuefday laft) againft an Army of 12,000 Men, with Cannon and Mor- tars, were obliged to furrender it up to the Enemy, but upon what Terms we 'could not then learn, and every one expected that the beft they counld obrain would be to be made Prifoners of War : But by an Exprefs that came in Yefterday, we are fet right in that Matter, by the fol- lowing Account of.the Siege and Surrender of that Fort- refs, which may be depended on. Alfter a moft gallant and obftinate Defence made by the Garrifon of Fort William Henry, and the Lines there, under the Command of Lieutenant Colonel Monroe, and Lieutenant-Colonel Young, as fecond in Command, after all their Ammunition was expended, and moft of their Cannon and Mortars burft, the brave Officers and Soldiers were forced to fubmit to Numbers (the French Army confifted of 12,coo Reguiars, Canadians and Indians, and were well ferv’d with a Train of Artillery) but fuch was their fuperior Spirit, that they wou’d accept of no other Articles of Capitulation, but the very honourable Terms of marcking off the whole Garrifon apon Parole, not 0 bear Arms under Eighteen Months. Lieuteonant Colo- nel Young is wounded. (Publith’d by Order) The French did not fhow that true Vigour as might be expefted from the fuperiority of Numbers, but did exert a very bad one, by way-laying the defencelefs Garrifon after the French Guard had left them, by fcalping a great many, ftripping ali the Officers, and other A&ts of cruel- ty ; fo that the brave Col. Moaroe came in ftript at the head of his Garrifon to Fort Edward.—Fort Edward was not yet invefted on the 11th in the Morning, and if our Reinforcements do get up Time enough to General Webb, he will hope to make a ftand there. Extra&t of a Letter from Fort-Cumberland, (Chegneéto ) : dated July 30. 1757. ¢ dbout the 20th Inflant awe Jaw a Smoke two miles Diflance from us, on awbich Lieut. Dixon, with 30 Rangers, was fent out in order to difcover the Occafion of it, but did not return at Night, avbich made us think be met awith Suc- cefs, and bhad-followed the Tralis of the Enemy ; but after three Days paffing, and no Sight of the Party, we [ent two Men out to diicover, if poffivle, if there avere any Number a- bout, but faw nothing of eiber Party of them. In2or3 Days after, a Party confifiing of 200 Regulars, and the Rangers, went out, who found a Man dead, with nine Bul- lets thro® bis Body, and bis right Ear cut off, and Head cut in many Places 5 this is all the Account ave have of the 30 Nen. They were taken as we imagine, by a large Number of Indians, who twas fifbing ; as our Party found a Number of Fijl awbhere the Men were.”’ Extralt of a Letter from Halifax ~—Fuly 25, Arrived here Capt.
