Tuefday Evening arrived at Port-Royal, Mr. Perrin Trott, late Surgeon’s Mat: .of the Greenwich, from Cape- Francois. He efcapet! by breaking the Goal there, on the 18th ult. in Company with two.othet Gentlemen ; they feized a Fithing Canoe on the Beach, in which they immediately embarked.: Mr. Trott fays, there were at the Cape, when they came away, one Frigate of 30 Guns, together with the Greepwich, which lay there as a Guard- thip, though.more refembling a2 Hulk, (he having loft her Top-maft, and. ‘moft of her ftanding Rigging, in the late Eogagement, which began af io in the morning, and lafted ’till g at Night ; duriag which Engagement, the gallant Capt. Rhoddam, was the whole Time upon Deck, notwithftancing his being attacked by two 74, one 64, and one French Frigate of 36 Guns : The Enemy fired whoily at his Rigging,* and as they fired high, he had only a few Men woanded ; Sat the Greenwich killed and wounded many‘of the French. Capt. Rhoddam, we hear, will foon be fent down to thisf’Ifland. " There has been a Duel between Mr. Perkins, l:te Captain of the Marines, and Mr. Wallace,” late Third Lieutenant of the Gyseen- wich, at Cape- Francois : ‘The Gentlemen, to fhew their Courage, agreed to fight With : Pifics,” T'oe to Toe ; by which Refolution, a Ball eatered the lower Part ot Capr. Perkin's Belly, which went through his Body ; Mr, Wal- Jace reczived another, whiy paffed under the lower Rib, and went through his Body aifo : * They were immedi- ately conveyed to the French Hofpital, but no Englifh- men was {uffered to come near them ;* fo we fear the lives of thofe brave young Officers, will be unfortunately loit. There are upwards of 500 Engli(h' Prifoners in that {mall and moft wretched deplorable Goal of Cape Francois, and what with their clofe Confinement, (not one being al- lowed the leaft Privilege of . walking out) together with other cruel Treatment, fhort Allowance of bad Provifions, and uncommon Barbarity to the Sick, render them Ob- jefts of the greateft Pity and Compaflion ; and it fome Method is not fpeedily taken for their Relief, they will ail inevitably perifh. Sunday laft arrived at Port Royal, the Fortune Hunter Privateer, Capt. ' There are private Letters in Town, from London, which inform us, that Mr Konowles, after an Examination of five. or fix Days, before the Houfe of Commons, was honourably acquited of the fcandalous Afperfions laid :to his Charge. 4 We are further credibly informed, that in Confideration of his many eminent Services, his Majefty has been plea- fed to.created him a Baron of the Kingdom of Great- Byitain ‘ g From the South.Carolina Gazetts, July 7, 1757. We are much obliged to the Gentlemen avho bas . favoured us aith the following Extralt of a Letter from bis Frierd in London, dated May 3, 1757. 43 S to any Defign the (French may have upon Carolina, I can give you no-other Information than from mere Report and Conjecture, which is, that, if you are not attacked this Spring or Sammer, in all Like- lihood you will meet with fome Difturbance in the Win- ter, as your Coafts and Harbours are equally acceflible at all Times, and ‘neither Miflifippi nor Cape- Francois are very diftant from you. For my Part, I tremble with ‘Apprehenfions for my Carolina Friends ; but I hope you are 'ere now provided and prepared againit the Wort, Erom the following Fatts however, you may form a Judgment yourfelf, whethes there is any Grounds for my Fears: InJanuary laft the lirench Court ordered 12 Ships ofi 30 Guns, with .50 Men each, to be fitted out at St. Maloes, for the King’s Service, the Relt of the Men to e e ~ Buffes, L /§ -Edway v London ;be furnithed by the King ; 'like Orders were fent to o- ther Ports ; and this was traated as a French Gafconade, " America. *till theBeginning of laft Month, when we were convinced, that the full Quota of the Maloin Veflels, and fome from the other Ports, had a&tually arrived at Breft, were there immediately full manned and vi€tualled for fix Months, and ordered td join a Squadron of which M. de Foligniis to have the Command. : March 17, M. About the fame Time three large- Tranfport Ships from Rochelle, bound for Miffifippi and Quebec, were taken By the York Man of War ; thefe were Part of a Fleet of 27 Sail : Soon aftér,*12 Ships fail’d from Natnes without Convoy, with a Regiment on board for Martineco, and 2z ¢f them hoifted broad Pendants that they might pafs for Men of War. April 5th, Four French Men of War, of 64 aod 74 Guns, from Toulon, with 250 veteran Soldi- eis in each, bound for America, flipt throogh the Gut of Gibraltar, - notwithftanding the Vigilence of Admiral Saunders, with whom they exchanged a few- Broadfides, and made the beft of their Way. ~About this' Time, a Squadron of Men of War, with a great Number of Tran{~ ports, and gooo Troops, under the Command of Lieut. General Lally, fail’d from Breft aad Port I'Orient, for April 11th. The Difpofition of the remaining Squadron at I'Orient, which before was deftined for the Eaft Indies, was quite changed, and the Regiment of Rerry put on fhore, to be embarked for Cape-Breton. About this Time, the Lion Privateer; took a French Storefthip, which came ouat with 11 more, 10 of them Tranfports, with zoo Soldiers in each, bound forMiflifippi. April 15th, Eighty Tranfports were taken up at Bour- deaux and Rochelle, to carry Troops, &c. to America. Prieft who came on board, informed him, that great Pre- ~ parations were making in all the Ports of France, in or- der to make an Actack upon Virginia and Carolina, ei- ther of which, he faid, they did not doubs making an eafy Conqueft of, and whereby the Reft of our Pofleflions in America would become an eafy Prey to them.”+ PHILADELPHTIA, Aduguf 4. : = A Lift of the People that wwere killed by the Indians, and miffing, in John-Cifney’s.Field, in Cumberland County, about _Jewen Miles from Shippenfburgh, on the 18th of lafp Month.
