NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY. DECEMBER 12, 1920. WOMAN ‘INFORMER’ MAY GET REWARD Ancient Law Revived as Girl Files Legal Actions London, Dec. 12 (A—London was talking today about Miss Millie Or- pen, bobbed haired girl of 23, who, assuming the role of *“common in- former,” has filed legal actions which may net her a large sum of money. The actions are writs claiming damages of more than £100,000 from film corporations and movie houses for alleged infringements of a law of 1781 forbidding Sunday perform- ances which recently was sustained by a ruling of three high court Judges. Under English law a “common in- former” may receive a part or the whole of penalties accruing to the Rovernment as a consequence of the information given, and, subject to certain restrictions. it would appear that this status would hold good for Miss Oppen. Although there has been consid- erable agitation to close the Sunday movie houses by the Sabbath Ob- servance league the young woman, ‘who works daily in London, told in- terviewers that she was plaving a lone hand and was not backed by any organization. The role of *common informer” {8 unusual in Britain in this day, but it has an ancient standing in British law, having been regularized as long ago as the reign of Henry VII, when, because of lack of police protection and crude administration, private citizens frequently informed against violators of the law, and re- ceived. in part or in whole, fines when imposed. Similar policy is followed by the United States customs service for informers of customs entry viola- tions, the reward being a percentage ©f the penalty imposed.
