FODTBALL STARTS INMIDDLE WEST Notre Dame Swings Into Action Against Southern Methodists Chicago, Oct. 4 (® — The middle- west was the big fime circuit in college football today, with three in- tersectional cards of unusual inter- est heading its bill. Foremost, because Notre Dame is Notre Dame, was the tussle between | Knute Rockne's eleven and the passing experts from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Tex. At Northwestern, one of the early fa- vorites for big ten honors, was Tu- lane, 1929 champion of the south and a heads-up candidate for the | honor this year. The third topliner and one of the | two strictly north-south battles was | Vanderbilt's invasion of Minnesota. Purdue, 1929 big ten titleholder, had Baylor University of Texas, as its initial opponent, while Illinois was scheduled with Towa State, in its opener. Ohio State expected to get off to a victorious start in the big ten race, with its opponent, Indiana, rated among the weaker elevens of the loop. Michigan State was at Michigan for their annual strugsgle, and Chicago and Wisconsin had two games each with minor opponents. The Badgers were host to Lawrence and Carleton, while Chicago had Ripon and Hillsdale as first tests. * Towa, the least interested member in the big ten competition, was after its second victory, with Oklahoma Aggies furnishing the competition.
